Customer Questions & Answers

Can the cameras be powered only via batteries or must AC be available?

If batteries, what size and how often do they need to be changed?
Asked by: DIYer
Wireless security systems are like wireless wi-fi routers, you still need to plug in a wireless router. A battery operated camera would not last for this type of application.

Does it have sound

Asked by: NICHO
Hello Nicho, thank you for your inquiry. While the DVR does have an audio input, our cameras do not have audio pickups. You can, however, connected audio equipped cameras that are not of Defender make, as long as they have BNC type connections.

Overall, it's a good system as far as cameras go - the images are clear, the nightvision is good and the transition is fast. One major issue though: its wireless signal operates on the 2.4GHz band using analog (not 802.11 WiFi). Sending four channels of video at this resolution over that frequency will wreck the performance of your 2.4GHz WiFi network, and possibly that of your neighbors' because it looks like very heavy noise to the router. If your WiFi ecosystem is entirely 5GHz, you can avoid the issue, but that's rare for most people - many common WiFi devices only support 2.4GHz. It's a dealbreaker for me. Other issues: It's really just a wired system which has BNC connectors on the back of the DVR which connect via cable to some remote wireless transmitters. You need one of these wired external adapters per pair of cameras. It's rather bulky vs a design where the DVR contains the wireless transmitter internally. I suppose they did this for manufacturing simplicity to keep the DVR the same between their wired and wireless systems. The metal on the cameras is very soft pot metal, and it strips easily. The tapped finish is rough enough that it's hard to tell if a bolt is at the end or if you're stripping it. The paper templates included for drilling holes where the cameras will mount didn't actually match the mounting pattern of the camera itself.

I have the defender security system up and running now,and as for the camera system it works great no problems, but I'm writing this review for those mabey looking at a security system,my advise do your home work before you invest.I have the 8 channel system with six cameras,I wanted to add two more cameras to my system and I find out that the kits have been discontinued,WOW as I have called defender several times now they say they should be getting some of the cameras in but they have no idea when.So I guess if I have trouble with my system my only opition is to trash the entire system and start all over.AGAIN WOW,a lot of money invested to trash,so my advise to anyone is do your home work and make sure before you invest in a system try to make sure it has good reviews and parts and accessories will allways be available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like looking out a window So easy to assemble/hook-up. The quality is amazing for the price. It's like looking out a window, the clarity is that good. Reviewing previous footage is also a breeze. This system couldn't have been made any user friendly than it is. I am a 54 y.o. woman, had the cameras up and plugged in within 15 minutes (the ladder work took me the longest time), and the rest of the system hooked up and running in about 10 minutes after camera installation. I am a very happy customer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little disappointed in the camera mounting The only fault I had with this entire system was that the cameras will not work with the mounting base anchored to the ceiling. It must be anchored to the wall. No matter how the camera is adjusted the image will be upside down. The troubleshooting manual addresses this specifically. I was attempting to anchor to the soffit around my house, which would have been ideal, but ended up having to anchor to the wall which is stucco; less than ideal. Other than that, the setup was very easy and the cameras paired with their receivers automatically.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wireless 520TVL Cameras with 100ft 21305 what a nice system i bought this system (Wireless 520TVL Cameras with 100ft Night Vision 21305) hopping it would meet my needs. i needed a wireless system as not able to run wires to out buildings. i do have plug ins at all locations so power was not a problem for the cameras. at first i downloaded the manual to read and thought this may be difficult to get up and running. when the system arrived i set it up all on the floor with all cameras and turned it on. it all worked right out of the box first try. the next step was to access the system via the Internet and my computer. i tried following the manual and had no luck as my modem seemed to not acknowledge it. i did not want to mess up my home wireless Internet so i call defender for help. they call back the next day and a wonderful lady walked me through the process in a short time and now all is working as i wanted. the system now works great and the support i got was the top of the line. i thank defender for their support and a great security system at a very reasonable cost. wmo

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not what I expected. need additional equipment I thought I could use this system with only my smart phone and equipment purchased. Not the case. Had to buy an additional monitor tried using tv with hdmi and it would not accept resolution. No person to talk to on support just a recording. Did eventually get some one on live chat. Read all the fine print. once hooked up and working after a week of trying to install. Works pretty decent. downloading onto flash drive from dvr is no cake walk and you almost need a degree in IT. Would recommend to younger generation but not for baby boomers

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great System but having problems with cameras freezing. Installed the Defender system (Pro) in January. Worked great until last month (May 2016). Cameras are freezing although the time frame for the camera is correct. This happens at least once a day. The only way to get things working is by rebooting (powering down). Could not locate a customer support phone number from their website. Sent them an email a week ago seeking help to resolve my problem, no response (in this day and age). Love the system (if I can get it to work reliably again) but product support after purchase is nil!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful, Cost-effective home surveillance System The day I received this system, I was like a (75 year-old) kid in a toy store. Plugged in everything, in one spot in my living room (cameras and all) and everything worked immediately. was terrific. Played with the cameras, mouse, etc. Since, there were issues with the DVR and lastly, a camera. Throughout the process of trying to fix the system, and going through the return process (which was as easy as falling off a log) I came to within an inch of frustration. However, the staff was firm in their suggestions to me - and I felt that if they were that concerned, they wouldn't mind my seemingly endless e-mails (which they didn't). Part of my frustration was because of a series of strokes I've had (which I refused to let interfer with Defender) and some memory issues. The last was a non-working camera (which was promptly replaced). Only I never did activate the cameras properly in the beginning. As I mentioned, I had just "played" with the equipment, and it worked seemingly without me doing much. However, the new camera didn't seem to want to cooperate. Well, at the point of giving up, Suzanne gave me the pairing information that I had not done before: namely, pressing the 30 second button on the receiver, and within that time frame, pressing the button at the rear of the camera. Voila. A miracle. I am surely overjoyed at the process, and KINDNESS and PATIENCE of the Defender representatives. As I worked through my stroke and memory issues, I never gave up and neither did Defender. If I were born more recently, technology would probably be a no-brainer. However, the bottom line is that I LOVE MY DEFENDER. The high definition cameras, no wires, excellent color and control, are great. Technology will always have "issues" of one kind or another. What matters here is the consistency, expertise, and experience of the Defender people to not just "handle" their product, but "handle" me in a respectful, and results-oriented manner. Looking back, most of the "issue" with me was getting up to speed with the technology - as minor a problem that it seems now that it's over. What remains is the responsible and respectful manner in which I was treated. That, is priceless.
