Customer Questions & Answers

can this be planted in a part sun area?

I have a shady area under a lot of large trees with restricted light. It is on the inside of my backyard fence. I have already started an elephant ear in the corner that is doing well, would this grow in this part sun and part shade environment ? I am looking for something of fair height to build up my privacy.

You should grow “Red Sister” in an area that receives bright sunlight.

My leaves are turning brown

Asked by: DebMac
Hello, Snip off yellow, brown, damaged or diseased ti plant leaves or stems as they may occur year round. Use clean, sharp shears or scissors. Water the Cordyline plant thoroughly until water drips through the drainage hole, but only when the top half inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Allow the pot to drain, and then pour out water that remains in the drainage saucer. Alternatively, place the pot in a sauce of water and allow the soil to absorb water until the top of the soil feels damp. Either way, never allow the bottom of the pot to stand in water. They will perform best in a bright location and they are okay for full sun exposure if they are acclimated slowly. We hope this is helpful! Thank you for your inquiry!

Can i grow this plant on a balconey in s. fla. that overlooks the ocean (will saltwater be problem) and will it hedge

Asked by: Alex
Hello, Unfortunately Cordyline are not salt tolerant. However this depends on proximity to salt water mist at your location and potential exposure. If you are 100 yards or so away from the ocean it would likely perform well. As a suggestion it would be best to place indoors or a sheltered area when winds are brisk from the northeast, east, or southeast to minimize salt mist and help protect the foliage. Regarding the 'will it hedge' inquiry, as a containerized plant it will continue to grow with an upright orientation. It may throw a few basal offshoots over time as it matures. If you want to have more offshoots a lite prune at the stem just below the new growth will encourage more growth points and a fuller plant over time. A hedge effect is created by planting several in rows either in line or staggered within relative close proximity in a landscape setting. For a similar effect on a balcony you can place multiple container plants nested closely by each other. The amount depends on your available space and desired effect. Thank you for your inquiry!

I purchased this plant from my local store, and back then it was just fine. So bright and full of life. I did some research on how to care for it, but a few weeks after it started to die. Returned to the store with a few green leaves, but most of them had fallen dried :(. So sad, this is abeautiful plant.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from for someone who is pretty savvy with plants I have been considering to buy a cordyline for awhile now. I always thought that I didn't have the right conditions in my apartment to allow them to live since it is very dry and it won't get much sun. Regardless, I still bought it because I loved the magenta leaves. The plant came in looking a little dry but still fairly healthy. It didn't take long for it to dry out and totally die. It serves as a dried out purple ornament at the moment. I'm sure it's not Home depot's fault since I didn't have the proper conditions for it. I feel that you need to have a bit of a green thumb to get this cordyline to survive. In regards to the seller, it was sent very quickly and packed very well. The price is also very fair since a cordyline this size sells for $5-$10 more in my area.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worried These are pretty for sure but I'm a little worried they're not going to thrive. I'm not sure if it's from the shipping or repotting but things are iffy right now lol. I bought 2 one came in good condition the other was a little rough which is why I repotted them. I'm keeping an eye on them for a few more days to see how things go but right now I'm losing leaves every day :(
