I'm not sure that the cable end that fits into the centrifugal clutch end is identical on both. If it is, make sure the new shaft is fully seated before you tighten it back down.

Howdy Jeremy,
Yes you can put a metal blade on. You need to have a conversion kit such as this to do that:

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 848 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Absolute satisfaction!! I am 80 years old and still take care of my 10 acres. This is the FIRST weed-eater I have ever had that was easy to start, easy to reload string and light enough to weed-eat around all of my Crepe Myrtles. I have about 100 . Love the weedeater. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good gas powered trimmer This is a very good trimmer. the only "oddly" about this trimmer is that you cut 8" pieces of trimmer cord & insert them individually into the trimming head: You cannot use a reel of string & tap out the trimmer cord. Your best bet is to look for "graphite" trimmer cord. It is unbelievably tough and doesn't require constant changing. A big plus is the longest warranty I've ever found on a trimmer. I signed up for a Home Depot credit card & got an instant thirty dollars off the price. Over all a good deal. July 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by works well easy setup out of the box. Started without issue. Been using it for a couple months now and no problems. July 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by echo gt-225 trimmer I bought this on a whim because I've heard only good things about Echo. I took it home and it fired up straight away on the second pull. The weight seems to be balanced and the engine is smooth. Feels like a great product in my hands. i do suggest the pre mixed fuel at Home Depot as it is ethinol free. not only is it better for your engine, echos warranty will not cover breakdown as a result of ethanol fuel July 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do you want it back ?? I'm a retired lawn care company and have used echo products for years. The weed wacker I just purchased seems OK but the new slip in 5 inches of trim line head is ridiculous.Great for dummies but I'm use to winding some line in the head and doing some serious weed wacking. This new system you waste more line than you use. If I knew the head was like it is I never would've bought it. I would really like to return it but I used it once.John Foster June 28, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Should have done more research I purchased the product based on the high ratings and its comparison to other string trimmers. Starting was a little difficult, but once it started you can feel that had a lot of power. It was very responsive and I was pleased with the way it felt. However once I started trimming it was quite evident that the string was not going to last long at all. I have an average size property and half way through the string were worn down to nothing. I then went to replace the string with the spare string and it was a nightmare. The string is supposed to be held by some sort of friction grip system that doesn't work. I put the trimmer down for the day and order a weed eater attachment (ECHO MaxiCut) only to find I needed a special tool to remove the old head and place the new one. I wen t to Home Depot an they recommended in addition to the weed eater head I should still have a head that had string that it would be better for grass. I purchased the High Capacity Speed Feed head and on the package it said full assembly parts included. I open it up when I get home and still no special locking tool included. So I still can't use the trimmer!!! The tool looks like an allen wrench but it is not, I can't find the tool anywhere, I am done with Echo products forever. I hope this review helps. July 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best trimmer the best line trimmer I have ever used. love the quick line replacement. no more taking the spool off and rewinding the line. make sure that you use ethanol free 89 octane gas. if you do not use it you WILL have fuel system problems. other than that, it is great. July 7, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed I went in to purchase a weed eater that I could handle myself. Something light weight. The young salesman took one off the rack and I tried it, which was light but shaft was short. he told me that it could be extended out and the handle could be adjusted. I thanked him, took it home, my son serviced it and I told him to adjust the shaft to a more comfortable height. Come to find out shaft does not extend so you are bent at an awkward angle. Also the very first time to use it, the string broke and I could not find any directions in the book as to how to take the head off to restring. All instructions was for a metal blade. I am a widow and son lives 100 miles away so there was no one to help figure out how to take head off. Now I am stuck with something I can't use til son comes to visit. Have always loved Home Depot, but right now I don't feel the love. July 5, 2016
