Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Parker Would be great if you had a huge house
I like this the most for the ideas of colors. This would be great for someone who has tons of space and lots of furniture, or if you just like to play around with rearranging stuff. It comes with a big glossy colorful book, which doubles as a workbook to write in the answers to the questions it asks. It comes with over a dozen sheets of cling-on shapes of every type and measurement of furniture you can imagine to place on the included big (16x20inch) fold out board, so you can see how it would fit proportionately in your room. It also comes with a dry erase marker to write on it too. I don't know anyone with a baby grand or concert sized piano, but there are shapes for both of them if you have both. Of course it also has all bed sizes, chair, table, couch, & sectional pieces too.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by paulawill2 Good for color theory, and furniture board
The Elaine Ryan is a neat product, but dated. Written in 2012 but talks about phones in the bedroom and bathroom.
The knowledge about color theory is good and I learned a lot. The paper in the book is of good quality and the board and furniture cut outs are nice and easy to use. The furniture cut outs are made of a plastic film that adheres to the to scale board. just take measurements of your room and arrange the furniture.

The ELAINE RYAN HOME DECORATING KIT provides a unique way to learn basic color matching and decorating for any room. The two standout items are the color matching bar and furniture grid board.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Doresoom Overpriced for a few good tips
This kit comes with a lot of features, but not all of them are useful. The main spiral-bound book has a few good tips, but it's got a ton of redundant information too. The book really focuses on color. I realize color is a huge part of home decorating, but it seemed to be an overwhelming theme of the book. The author even suggests at one point that you should command your subconscious to dream about colors that you want in your house before going to sleep.
The kit is definitely meant for women, with one entire chapter devoted to "You and Your Mother," which was a little alienating for a male reader. Good thing my wife was interested in reading it as well.
I also disagreed with some of the tips given in the book, like painting or wallpapering the ceiling the same bold colors as the walls. The author also claims that a white ceiling will not make the room brighter, but since color appears as color to our eyes due to its absorption of certain wavelengths of light, I'd have to disagree. Maybe it's just an artistic perception issue, but from a scientific perspective white surfaces DO reflect more light.
I also didn't think the included color bars all matched each other. I'd be better off getting a FREE paint color pamphlet that just about all the major paint manufacturers make that automatically recommend matching colors and give example pictures of rooms painted with them.
The dry-erase furniture grid board is pretty useful, and the peel-and-stick furniture cutouts are reusable as well. I could do the same with graph paper, but this way takes care of all the scaling automatically and saves time if you want to view several different layout options.
All in all, the kit has a few good tips, and the furniture grid board is pretty useful. However, I think it's extremely overpriced for the content. If it was priced at $20-30, I'd consider giving it 4 stars, and maybe 3 stars priced at $30-40.

Where was the Elaine Ryan Home Decorating Kit when I was decorating my home? I could have used the furniture templates to arrange the furniture around my living room, master bedroom and my kid's rooms. And I sure could have used Elaine's Color Bars at that time because I had to change my wall colors about a zillion times, so that it worked with all of the other colors in my home. If I had used her system for matching colors then the whole experience of decorating would have been delightful instead of emotionally exhausting. Fortunately I'm now able to see where I made my color matching mistakes, and I'm correcting it all! Her system is so easy to use, it's ridiculous! I'm telling you, these Color Bars are the bomb!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Jovi More fun than a barrel of monkeys!
After reading some of the on line reviews, I was expecting ALOT. I am pleased to report that the Elaine Ryan Home Decorating Kit delivers what it promises AND MORE! So easy to use, but the fun factor of being your own decorator WITH confidence is what really turned me on.
I also appreciate the convenience of the color bars, as I can pop them into my purse and have them handy when I am shopping for the perfect accent piece or paint color.
Finally, if you are old enough to remember "colorforms" then you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the repositionable stickers which allow you to set up your room so easily.
In short, this is a gift to yourself that keeps on giving and for the low cost investment it's a no brainer. DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Penny Elaine Ryan's Home Decorating Kit
Elaine Ryan's Home Decorating kit is a unique package. In it is a
book by Elaine on color which becomes very personal for the reader.
She goes into great depth on the importance of color in one's home.
She has created a color bar that one can easily take to paint stores,
fabric stores, and the like. It helps one make those important choices.
Finally there is a grid with small furniture pieces that can be used very
efficiently in designing a room. There is a lot here in one package -
a real bargain compared to the cost of an interior designer today.
