Product Overview

During storms or in the event of a break-in, windows are the most vulnerable points in your home. Gila Safety and Security film is designed to provide glass protection by helping to strengthen glass, keeping your family and belongings safe. This film helps to impede quick entry through windowpanes and glass doors and holds panes in place to minimize flying glass due to violent weather or accidents. While virtually clear in color, Gila Safety and Security film can provide all these benefits without changing the look of your home.

  • Helps contain broken glass fragments
  • Helps slow intruders
  • Helps prevent glass scratches
  • Ideal for patio doors, cabinet fronts, shower doors and windows
  • Adhesive application; instructions included
  • Use with Gila complete application kit

Customer Questions & Answers

How Thick is it?

4 mil, 8 mil, 12 mil? I can't seem to find the thickness specification, even on Gila's website.
Asked by: SneeingEmu
Per http://www.metric-conversions.org/length/inches-to-millimeters.htm Inches to Millimeters conversion: 0.16in= 4.064000mm

I believe a minimum of 8 mil is a required thickness to meet "security" standard protocol for single family home security (as opposed to condominium, apartment or duplex). At 4 mil this film could only be considered a "safety" or anti shatter film and to label it as a security film is very deceptive to the customer. Don't you agree?
Asked by: bsouth
My insurance company says that it is glass containment not Security Grade when I enquirer about a discount on glass coverage since we are in a hurricane area. Allstate agent told me that unless it was 10mil or thicker, professional installed or had lexan reinforcement attached it would not qualify in a 6x6 pane window. I took the shatterproof glass covers for tablets & added it too the panes within reach of the new electronic deadbolt then added a layer of the film. It will deter a burglar & help when hurricane debris goes flying. Glass cracked from a piece of neighbors trampoline but didn't come through.

Would this work on a mirror?

Wondering if this will provide a little extra protection for both the mirror and my daughter. Sometimes toys fly.
Asked by: TwoBits
Yes, you could put this on a mirror.

I only bought GILA b/c it was the only brand available in the 6 ft lengths at both Home Depot and Lowes. In doing this review, I’ve just discovered that ARTSCAPE can be ordered in the longer lengths online. Wish I’d known that!!¬¬ 20 times harder to apply than ARTSCAPE, plus it’s thinner plastic and you can’t reuse it. I have reused my ARTSCAPE many times on multiple projects. You have to damage 2 inches of the length, just to get the plastic backing off of it. Took 15 minutes to do that alone, and I came very close to trashing the entire package! Just imagine applying CONTACT paper to glass, and you’ll get the picture of how tough it is to apply and OMG – get the bubbles out. Impossible to do that. No problem with ARTSCAPE

I had help installing this, and in spite of all our efforts to work quickly before things dried out, the film turned out terrible. We could not get the air bubbles out to save our lives! It turned out really icky. I am not happy with it, but because I couldn't afford a new window, and the county building inspector said this was another option to have a safety film, I went for it. If you can afford a new window, go for that and do not install this film. No matter how hard you try, you can't make it look good.

This product is more difficult to apply than the directions would have you think. After two hours of working on a couple 18x24 inch pieces. They both peeled off when left to dry overnight.

We just had new glass put in our windows, so there was no old paint or chalk on them. In spite of pain painstakingly following the instructions, the film still has distortions and discolorations. On the plus side, they are very clear where the above problems are not apparent. It cost about $75 to do two double hung windows, that and a half days work.
