Not necessary on the hose reel. It should have rubber faucet washers in the female connections just like a garden hose.

Connection of short hose to axle

This seems unworkable, and several people have mentioned it, but not everybody, so I have to ask:

How does the short hose connect with the axle so that it does not spin with the reel when reeling in or out?
Obvioisly, it will tear the hose connection out if it's spinning with the reel... so how has this worked for some people? Do they not use the reel for hose storage?

Answer:
Hi Shinehouse,
The connection end of the axle has, for lack of a better term an end post. There is a housing that slips over the end post that the hose connects to.
Although I haven't removed the snap ring and taken it apart yet, there are likely two o-rings seated near each end of the post to reduce leakage.
See the attached pictures and video.

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 42 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Easy fix for leaky hose reel Nice looking hose reel. Worked great first year. Had to repair due to leaks. Replaced o-rings in left side swivel block. (2) Danco #12 O-Rings (96729) & Danco Waterproof Grease (80360); both available at Home Depot. Believe me, I am not happy having to repair something that is only a year old. At the same time, I can understand that the o-rings will wear out over time due to use and weather conditions. I would still recommend this product over traditional plastic... Tools required; C Clamp removal tool and small flat-head screwdriver to remove old o-ring. Note: Apply liberal amount of grease to o-rings (both sides). April 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful but breaks apart I bought 2 about 2 years ago. I think will last almost forever. Two days ago the handle breaks apart with no big effort when using. Now I noticed is not a real metal but an alloy that when broken looks cheapy. Now is really unfair to buy a new one for almost $70.00. I could not find a replacement handle yet. October 11, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Left side where hose attaches leaks from fitting I bought two of these. This one isn't a year old and leaks on the left side where the hose connects. It not the hose connection but the actual fitting that is squirting out water. April 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hose reel The product works very nicely and it looks nice mounted on the front of the house, the reel works great and roles up quickly. August 23, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by No Hardware! Came with no hardware or instructions! Stylish. We'll see if it lasts in South Florida sun... August 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Looks good. Mounted easy. I have had one of these for over a year so decided to replace the other plastic one that we had. Rolls hose up nice and smooth and no leaks. August 16, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Same problem as everyone else I followed the recommended fix from Tempest (o-rings)....It improved the leak, but didn’t completely fix the problem. I may have pinched a ring or over scrubbed the metal when removing the hard water. But, it was worth a try. I called Hampton Bay and they gave me the number to the parts department for the actual manufacturer. $16.95 and three days later I had a new “swivel.” Irritating, but better than tossing the entire hose reel. The manufacturer recommended spraying silicon spray in the swivel a couple times a year to keep the o-rings healthy and prevent the leaks. May 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stay Away Stay away from this hose reel, it's junk. Like others have said after year one this thing is useless and will be leaking all over the place. April 26, 2016
