I purchased the folding bookcase/mantle and received them last night. Unfortunately I have the same issue most everyone else has had when purchasing the mantle - it doesn't fit onto the bookcase easily. The holes in the mantle aren't large enough to accommodate the plastic balls on the bookcase. I now have to ask a friend to drill them out for me. I'm not sure why Home Decorators doesn't fix the situation. How many other customers have to deal with this situation before the company does something ?! This is very frustrating !

I have bought 6 of these mantel tops over the last 10 years, all in the oak finish. They really give the bookcase a finished look. I think it also makes the stacked bookcases a little more steady and gives me another shelf to put things on.
The only thing I've noticed is that the mantels I ordered 10 years ago look almost like a solid piece of wood. On the most recent one I can see where a couple small pieces of wood were spliced together to make the mantel. Since my mantels are on top of two stacked bookcases, no one will ever inspect them up close so it's not an issue for me. I assume that this would not show at all on the painted ones.

I really wanted to purchase the folding bookcase but I didn't like the look of the open top. The mantle seemed the perfect way to complete the look. I purchased two in black and the color and wood were great.
Unfortunately, like many of the other reviews, the holes in the mantle did not line up properly with the bookcase. Since I don't own a rubber mallet, I had to use a folded up cloth and a hammer to get these onto the bookcase. The first one was so misaligned that it may have permanently bent the piece that connects it to the bookcase. The mantle is attached but is a little lopsided and looks like it floats above the bookcase a little bit. Both are hardly noticeable unless you're looking closely and comparing it to the second one. The second one was incredibly stubborn but seems to fit a little better than the first. As long as you don't try to pick the bookcases up by the mantles they should be ok.
Overall I'm not sure the quality was worth the price but the overall appearance was exactly was I was looking for. The bookcases are gorgeous with the mantles attached. I'm not sure if they'll survive dismantling but I don't plan to move them much.

This mantle is a nice finishing touch to the folding bookcase. As other reviewers noted, the dowels and holes don't line up as they should which make attachment to bookcase a tad painstaking than it should be. However, no big deal, I needed to tap the dowels with a hammer to staighten them so they'd align with the holes, then pound the mantle corners with a hammer, using a folded towel in between, to secure the mantel in place. Wood stain matches the bookcase. Makes for a convenient surface for decorative pieces. In my case, a beautiful table fountain. As with the bookcase, I appreicate that the mantle is constructed of wood.

I usually buy very expensive furniture, or antiques and fill in with believe it or not, pieces from the street (I live in a very good NYC neighborhood and have amassed a collection of wonderful finds).
These bookcases were the first pieces of moderatly or low cost furniture that I have purchased in a long time. The wood construction and in my case the colors (teal) is rich and sturdy enough (though not heavy). It took time to unwrap the boxes and packaging alone, so get someone to help but setting up was not difficult if you are reasonably strong and healthy.
Everyone loves the light airy quality and the wood solidity. The mantle top does give it a very nice finish.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by EnglishProfessor Great shelves & mantel!
I've bought other folding shelves like these, for less money, BUT, none are as sturdy and handsome as these are; one previous set claimed "solid wood" but the shelves were thin boards with rickety hollow frames underneath, so of course they have warped and sagged over time. These are SOLID, and I like the little dowels on the end that keep books from falling through (a problem with the first set). A really nice feature is this mantel, since it creates a handsome cap (& extra surface) to the bookcase. Heavier, of course, but I'm really happy with the solidness of this truly solid wood bookcase. And painted! (The other ones I had to paint myself). Worth every penny.

I have been looking to get mantel tops for book cases I bought from a department store about 10 years ago. These seemed to be compatible, so I purchased four in Golden Oak. Unfortunately, the actual color is much lighter than it shows on the web site. I am keeping them, anyway, because they are very well made for the price and I'm afraid shipping will be too costly. It would have been helpful if the color samples were true to the finished product. To end on a note of praise, I was very pleased with how quickly I received my order and impressed with how carefully everything was packaged.

I just purchased ANOTHER mantel top for my green shelf units that I originally purchased a few years ago. I was using the 2 units stacked, so I originally only bought 1 mantel top. Now I wanted the option to put my shelves side-by-side, but that would require 2 mantel tops. I was VERY PLEASED that they still had the SAME GREEN color that I originally ordered. I was very afraid they might have discontinued it, or changed the shade of green, but everything was A-OK! :)
These have been good sturdy shelves for us. We use them for books. They are EXTRA-SUPER because there is NO assembly & they can easily be transported/moved because they just fold up & go with you. VERY CONVENIENT.
I'm a 'happy camper'! :)
