I'm thinking of using these crates as little seats for my balcony. Are they strong enough for someone to sit on them?

Answer:
These crates are fairly sturdy. I am putting record albums in mine and they seem to be fine. I put cardboard at the bottom so the individual albums do not slip through.

Not sturdy at all. They're flimsy and and bend with slight pressure. I cant believe people are using these poor quality crates to build coffee tables.

Answer:
I wouldn't use these (especially the largest one) as seats for adults. Kids might be able to get away with sitting on the medium or small one, but they are not very sturdy and are pretty rough. Without sanding, you would likely get splinters with prolonged contact.

It's ok. Pretty small staples are keeping it together. I would put anything too heavy on it. I added my own extra staples to make it a little more secure. It's not 'rickety', just a little cheap.

NO WAY. I bought four of these to use as planters and someone walking by accidentally kicked into one and their foot went completed into it. They are not made to be sat on, made from some kind of 1/4 inch soft wood. They didn't even last a year before they fell apart completely.

No. I tried stacking them, and they were very tipsy. Several crates were broken on the shelf when I visited the store in person.

Answer:
This would work if the items were not too heavy or you don't pack it full. They are pretty light weight and break easily. Mine didn't last one season for magazines. One I accidentally kicked and blew out the whole side. Two slats broke and I wasn't even wearing shoes. The other ones I used as planters out on my deck. I think one fell apart by itself, and one is still in use since last year.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 301 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy and attractive These unfinished crates are attractive and reasonably solid. They're compressor-stapled together but the side bars are thicker and sturdier than your standard apple crate. Can be sanded and then stained or painted for a finished look but are reasonable attractive pine in their unfinished state. (They do not require sanding for basic use, but definitely haven't undergone a superfine grain so I wouldn't recommend putting them to use in a place where they will be actively touched/could splinter over time without doing your own additional sanding.) Natural variation occurs due to the wood, of course. Stack well enough due to thickness of sides but do not interlock. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality was better than I expected After reading some of the reviews, I was surprised at the high quality of these crates. I bought one to use as a magazine crate in the living room. The construction of mine was solid, but I did add a finishing nail between the staples in each board just to add some longevity to the box, since it might get heavy as it fills up. I distressed the wood a little then sanded lightly & stained it with Minwax Provincial stain. I'm going to add some felt pads to the bottom so it won't scratch up the floor over time. The carrying handles are nicely done. Several have asked inside dimensions, here they are: Length - 16 3/8" Width - 11 3/4" Height - 9 1/8" Thickness of side boards - about 5/16" Thickness of end boards - about 3/4" Overall, I'd recommend these highly and you won't find a better price on a wooden crate of this size and quality.....they're Made in USA. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Does not fit vinyl records I bought the crate for my vinyl records and its almost big enough but not quite. Add another half inch to the design, this is a popular use case. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DIY Project Perfect for DIY projects!!! We made my favorite piece of furniture with these September 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Review of 18 in. x 12.5 in. x 9.5 in. Large Wood Crate The crates are well constructed, but the wood is not sanded and has many splinters on the slats and the hand holes are rough. I was not expecting a totally finished product but some of the splinters pull away from the slat. I would still recommend the product but be prepared to do some sanding and finish work. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worth it! I waited until these were on sale as I needed to buy a number of them. Was totally worth the wait! I stained them a dark cherry and used these as shelving for an open area we had in our dining. SO happy with the result. April 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly What I Wanted They were exactly what I needed/wanted- very happy! August 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dorm Room Crates The crates were a reasonable solution to elevating a large printer in a dorm room while also providing some additional storage. I has similar crates in college for vinyl albums. They are not decorative but functional. August 23, 2016
