Answer:
The 2 ends are 6 inches but that makes the sides, and tool area, about 3 inches high. A good pencil or pen storage area? A loose change compartment? A dinning table napkin holder? Lots of good ideas come to mind, but not tools.

The product overview for Kids Workshop Birthday Party supplies kit states that these kits are available in single or multi-paks on homedepot.com but I only see them as single.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by The WORST product EVER This is by far the WORST product I have ever purchased and if I hadn't already tried to assemble it I would have returned it. Do NOT waste your money on this. First off, it is so small that it is completely useless. Secondly, assembly is ridiculous. All the cheap flimsy nails bent. There are no spare nails. The bottom is made of thin cardboard/particle board composite. HORRIBLE! This is something you would see at a Dollar Store and walk right past it! I strongly encourage you NOT to waste your time or your money on this poor quality and embarrassing product. Home Depot should be ashamed to sell something so poor. I would give it negative stars if I could. January 14, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not worth the money Just received the large wood tool box today. Not worth the money . Three of the holes in the sides were reamed out to were they came through the outer side of the box. One side of the box had a large chunck missing that you can see. No sanding will make this box look any better. What a disapointment. Easy to put togeter, but looks bad. March 22, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Product needs some fine tuning.Quality of wood could be better. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter would have a very hard time doing this right out of the box unless you make a few changes. Pre drill the side pieces to help guide the nail. Use a better quality nail that has a finished point to it so they don't bend and stick out the sides. I made those few changes and she was able to put it together with minimal assistance from me .Also a chip of wood was missing along one of the side panels. I fixed this by planning a bevel on it and doing the same to the other side to match. February 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Slight problems and great differences between what you get during the "build n grow" sessions at the store! My daughters built two tool boxes that we picked up during the monthly builds at our local home depot . Very happy with what we have. Bought 7 of these to do as a group project with several of her friends because I thought it was a known quantity, it is not! This kit is similar size to the build and grow kit but the wood is narrower on the sides. The pre drilled nail guide holes on the end are set up for the original width wood and when used drive clear through the outside of the narrow wooden sides. The included nails are junk. They are very soft and bend every time the kids get their hammer a little off kilter. If you buy these, do not trust the nail holes, make your own to guide the kids and most of all, replace all of the nails. Use wood glue on the seams between the sides back and front as the width of the wood is too narrow to hold the nails from shifting if the tool box is not set down properly. February 16, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Cute LITTLE tool box I made one just like this in 9th grade shop. I need an organizer box or two for my truck, and thought this would be great. I did see the size dimensions, but I still didn't realize just how SMALL this box is. This may be a "hands on learning" for small children, but it is NOT a useable small tool box. I'll just use this TINY box as my pattern and make the bigger ones that I need. ALL parts came in - No parts broke. A good LITTLE tool box. January 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed This is a great idea for a kids project but very poorly executed. It's really heartbreaking to sit down with your son to build this project and find the pieces do not fit together very well. The dowel rod was too short for the span. The kerfs on the end panels were cut at an angle and did not match with those of the side panels. Since its sold only online, a simple emergency trip to HD to exchange is out of the question. Its expensive firewood. You can imagine my son's disappointment.. April 28, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great product. Will never use in store pick up again! I am satisfied with the wooden box once I cut out my own bottom and got my own nails. I had the item sent to the Liberty store for in store pick up. When I got it the package was opened. I asked the the lady working why it was open and if all of it was there she assured me it was that they open them to check them. When I got home I found out the bottom piece of wood and the nails were missing. The tool box is and perfect for it's price. I would not recommend in store pick up! December 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The tool box kits provided the perfect activity and end results for my Easter Box project with the grand-kids! I needed a substitute for the traditional Easter basket that would be practical and a fun activity for my two grandchildren, ages 3 1/2 and 22 months. I shopped online, knowing Home Depot had a great children's program in stores and would likely have a great selection. The tool box was the perfect size and proved to be just the right level of difficulty for young ones who would have adult help. Kits arrived on time. Instructions were clear and easy. March 19, 2013
