Answer:
The thermostat can be accessed via a web browser so you can use any device that has a browser and do not need a dedicated "app" - but an app does keep it simpler.

There is a general web page interface that should work if you can get to the web. I don't have an android so I can't say if there is a dedicated app.
The iPhone app worked on my iPad
However the thermostat I had malfunctioned and I returned it after 3 days.

Model # 44917 is not a "zone" controlling thermostat. It will control a 'multi stage' heat pump or a 2 stage heat pump, but is NOT designed to control zoned systems.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.1 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not buy I bought the Hunter Universal Internet thermostat 3 days ago. Installation and setup were simple and it worked the first day. However the iPad app would not connect the second day and then I noticed the date on the unit said Nov 31, 2012! There is no such date. Then this morning at 3:30 I woke up sweating and went to look at the thermostat and it was 83 in the house with a set temperature of 99!!!! I tried manually lowering it but it would reset to 99. I had to shut off the heat. So much for my energy savings. It is 25 degrees outside and I have my bedroom window open. This has been a disaster..this thing is going back today. December 2, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Hunter thermostat Installation was a breeze, just follow the steps as outlined and it works. It looks decent on the wall. Has Very large current temp display with smaller target temp below it that is not bad in size. I wish the date and time where a bit bigger but they are adequate when next to it. The registration process is a little clunky but not bad, you can work your way through it without to much trouble. All and all I like the unit so far, will see after some time how it goes. And do not mind the 9.99/year for the online availabilty to check in and control my house temps and get alerts if anything goes wrong... February 10, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Beware of hidden fees! Great product. Great idea. Hidden fees to continue to use the product - BAD! First three months are free. After that, plan on shelling out ten dollars per month or a one time fifty dollars to continue to use the product. The only way you can access this thermostat is over the internet. You must pay the fee to access it. Home Depot sells similar items that do not require a monthly fee. Do your homework. A cheaper purchase price does not always mean cheaper in the long run. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Internet interface - poor programmable setup This product looks great and installs very easily - that is about the only good things to say about it. One cannot program the unit physically - you have to access the internet to program it even when you are right in front of it!!. The programming mode is poorly designed - one cannot copy a day's setting to another day and once false move when creating your settings and you lose it all!!. Getting the unit to connect to your wifi settings is another thing they don't make clear in the manual - it took about 30 minutes of experimenting before the unit connected to my wifi setting at home. I ended up disconnecting the unit and returning it - also contacted Hunter about the poor features but never heard a word back from them - shows you what customer support would be like!! All in all - forget this unit and get one of the other offerings. November 29, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by May 23 2013- do not buy DO NOT BUY, I just spoke to a tech support person who stated they are reimbursing people for the thermostat since they no longer can provide internet access to it. Thats the only way you can program this thermostat. If you buy this now you will just be getting your money back later and will not be able to use it online. The online feature is NO longer working. May 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Huge Value compared to others I shopped! This product is easy to use, and great in my beach home! I'm glad I didn't base my purchase on the other review, because the fee is $9.99 a year and is really a wash when you way the pluses. The app was free in itunes, and easy to navigate as well! November 29, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by wonderful for monitoring remote locations. When they say easy installation, they are not kidding. It took me longer to remove the old thermostat. Product could use some better instruction on how to manage the home and away features March 12, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy installation and operation Instructions were clear and installation took less than 5 minutes. Setup requires some knowledge and experience with Internet setup and ability to download a wifi app and follow directions. December 4, 2012
