This is a very handy unit to have around if you have a large yard that is prone to compaction. A sand-silt-clay soil is best...want to avoid soils with rocks or pebbles as they either bend/break the aerators or plug the ends. Also, a yard where you can keep going forward is best. If you have to cross a driveway a lot, you have to get off, raise the unit, cross, drop the unit, repeat...bit of a pain.
I lined the tray with vapour barrier, put a board across the centre...got two pieces of bent rebar for handles. Filled weight tray with concrete, and inserted two handles. Now I have two weights (~60-70lbs each). Could probably get away with less weight on thick organic soils.
It makes a world of difference aerating once a year in early spring. Once aerated, then fertilize and reseed. Can even topcoat with some more soil if your keen.
Took one star off only because one cannot change height on the fly...

I purchased this aerator in Fall 2014 to do my 3/4 acre of grass. I have used it twice with great success. Solid and very easy to operate. Pulled nice size plugs each time I used it. Make sure your lawn is moist before aerating. Not sloppy wet but moist. Placed approx. 120lbs of sand bags (3x40lbs) in the tray. Higher priced than most models but you get what you pay for. Saving myself hundreds each time I do it myself. Great investment and highly recommend.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LowKeyLawnNut A little pricey, but great quality!
The JD aerator is manufactured under contract by another brand available at HD. This one is significantly higher quality than the other. For example, the spoons are broken into 3 independently spinning sections, and (by necessity) there are two more supports from the weight tray to the spoon axle. This transmit the weight to the spoons in the center of the aerator better than the other brands.
The aerator is very easy to assemble considering the JD assembly instructions are not always straightforward. The only issue I had was identifying which side was the "back" at the very beginning of the first step. Hint, the picture in the manual is misleading.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by yardmaster2011 Aerator John Deere
My yard is in terrible condition. Already this fine peice of equipment has gotten the grass to start to grow. It leaves nice big holes for seeds and water to sit in. This is the first peice like this that I have purchased from Home Depot and would highly recommend this to anyone in need of bettering their yard. It works like a charm.

Simple, well-instructed assembly; high quality materials.
With basic care this aerator should easily last my lifetime and then some. Does a very good job of aerating even a somewhat lumpy lawn.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by BLinNorthernCalifornia Great Product, not so great service from John Deere
I poured through the reviews here and the other sites before purchasing this product. They were all really accurate: high quality steel, torn packaging, inaccurate and challenging (not impossible) assembly instructions. However, it works well, especially if you are working on a half acre plus piece of yard. My only complaint was that one of the transport bolts snapped during assembly with very little torque. I called John Deere, and rather than just shipping me the one bolt, they referred me to a dealer that is in another state over an hour away. For a product that costs over $400, I would think that they could ship me the one dollar part. Otherwise, it worked like a charm with just the fertilizer I was going to put on the lawn as a weight (about 150lbs).

This unit will last as long as you take care of it. It is heavy guage steel built to last a lifetime and worthy of the older Deere name. I have a 15,000 Sq ft lawn of clay soil. Was very impressed with the 3 to 2 1/2 inch plugs using 3 bags of quick cement for weight. I made 2 passes and had no problems turning, as the end tines are independent. You definetly get what you pay for on this one.

I've used it once and was very please with the depth of the plugs pulled from the red Georgia clay.
I used 120 lbs and will probably increase for my next treatment. I was missing the hitch pin from shipment but John Deere had me one in 3 days.
