Customer Questions & Answers

what is the best way to empty the hopper

Asked by: Anonymous
That one can be tougher than you think. Depends on how much you load it. It can get quite heavy with Mulched leaves/clippings. Just back it up to a drop spot and go behind and lift it up manually. The rope pull works, but only for lighter loads.

is this unit have fully ajustable height controll

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes but there is a design flaw in some of the units that causes the height control to drop on it's own. Myself I use a cheap pair of Vise Grips to hold the bar in place.

how fast does it have to be pulled to work

Asked by: Anonymous
Use a moderate speed which will allow the brushes to sweep the debris into the catch bin. This will avoid having to go back over the area numerous times.

does it pick up gravel? (pushed from road by snow plow)

Asked by: Anonymous
yes it does indeed pick up gravel. I have the same exact problem with plow throwing rocks up into my front yard, so every spring I've had quite a chore raking the gravel back out to the road. This John Deer 42" lawn sweeper ended my rock raking days. There is however one problem to be aware of. Closer to the road is a ton of gravel...yeah I mean a ton. Rocks weight a lot so I usually only make one pass across the front of lawn closest to the road and have to dump before it gets too heavy. It does take a few passes to get most of the rocks and gravel swept up but this still beats the work of raking them. I have had one other brand that was very disappointing for acorn sweeping. So since I have a lot of oaks here I sold it after two seasons of too many baby oaks sprouting in the yard. This is a good sweeper for sticks, rocks, gravel, acorns, mushrooms. I don't use it for leaf pickup at all, that's just a side benefit of picking up the acorns and sticks.

The shipping box was pretty well mutilated (UPS I suspect). The associate glanced in the box and said it looked ok. When we unpacked it it did have a couple of small dents and the towing tubes were somewhat twisted. I waited a week for delivery so did not really want to return plus it is so heavy. Although minor damage it made assembly more difficult than it already was. Assembly diagrams could be better because written directions are too lengthy and confusing. It did pick up well post hurricane Matthew but you cannot fill hamper as the rope pull dumping feature will not work if load too heavy. Folding up for storage requires some disassembly which is not feasible given the difficulty of realigning due to the damage and overall time it takes! Would need 2 people. This was more expensive than other products but wanted this to go with JD Lawn tractor and the JD reputation. Probably not worth the price. I would recommend with reservation.

The 42 inch John Deere tow-behind Lawn Sweeper worked real well for about ten minutes then the right wheel began to lock as the left side was not sweeping as well as in the beginning! I called the manufacturer and they determined that the problem was the gear on the left side. They sent the gear and I installed it. ) I had to buy some snap ring pliers as I had none) It has been raining since I made the repairs but I think it will work correctly now! I am very hopeful that it will NOW meet my expectations! It sure beats raking leaves!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor wheel gear design leads to early and excessive wear The wheels have a plastic-toothed gear that drives a metal gear attached to the shaft that turns the brushes. Metal gears meshing with plastic gears reduces the life of this product to months. Since both wheels are gear-linked to the shaft that rotates the brushes any turns causes one wheel to attempt to move faster than the other thereby causing tremendous wear on the plastic wheel gears. Since turning is inevitable, the accelerated wear on the wheel gears is also inevitable. The teeth on the plastic wheel gears are "eaten away" by the metal gear attached to the shaft and in a short time, the wheels will not turn the brush shaft. Purchase this product knowing that you will replace the wheels every few months.

The sweeper came unassembled and lucky for me I have a skilled man in the house to put it together. You can use two people to hold up some of the pieces while assembling. Once it is hooked up it sweeps like a charm! The only thing is that you have to watch that you don't get to many leaves in the holder or it's hard to empty.
