About five years or so ago, we remodeled our master bathroom. We tiled all the floor and walls with porcelain tile. We installed a Kohler cast-iron shower pan, a Kohler glass shower door, and Kohler shower valves and showerhead. Needless to say, I am a Kohler fan. One problem we have encountered over that time, was with the shower blasting constantly towards the back wall of the shower, we've had some loss in the grout of the corner of the back wall. Plus, with the shower flowing at an angle, our small grandkids don't like it, because it hits them directly in the face. In retrospect, I kind of wished that we had plumbed the shower so that the showerhead was overhead, pointing downward.
I got the chance to try out this Kohler Hyrdorail Shower Column in Polished Chrome for Beam Shower Arms, and jumped at the opportunity. When it arrived, I was immediately impressed by the packaging Kohler used. They usually package very well, but this was exceptional. Not only was the product very well protected by cardboard packaging inside the box, but Kohler even went to the extra step of enclosing the Hydrorail itself inside a soft cloth fabric sock, so that it doesn't get scratched, or smudged. All of the parts are nicely packed in bubble-wrap bags, and the chromed parts are also wrapped in paper. I love it when companies take extra care to insure that what you spend your hard-earned money on arrives in good shape. Other companies could take lessons from Kohler!
The Hydrorail itself is very stoutly built, like you'd expect from a company like Kohler. It is also very simple in its construction. I haven't got it installed yet, as I need to get a drill bit to drill mounting holes in our porcelain tile wall, and then get a good handheld shower hose and showerhead to mount on the bottom of the Hydrorail. I have been researching handheld shower devices, and it seems that very few still make them out of metal, which I want. We breed Great Danes, so we want an extra long handheld shower hose too, so that we can bathe our big dogs in the shower. I have read the very well-made instruction booklet that comes with the Hydrorail, and am completely confident that it will be a breeze to install, once I get those holes drilled in the tile wall.
I am completely satisfied with the Kohler Hydrorail, and really look forward to having an overhead shower pointing straight down, along with a nice handheld shower for grandkids and dogs. This device is well-thought-out for new construction, or retro-fits like ours. Kohler has included the parts that most people will need, and made their instruction booklet well designed to answer just about any question you might have. I highly recommend this Kohler Hydrorail to anyone who wants an overhead shower and a handheld shower in one. Thanks Kohler, and Home Depot!

We have a rain shower head that is 8 inches in diameter, it was sitting slanted against the existing mounting about 6 inches away from the wall. Although it didn't seem to be a big deal when showered under this option, after installing this hydrorail shower column, the experience is a much better water flow over the top of the head like standing under the rain. It's high enough for my 6 feet tall husband to be completely under the shower head. The shower arm extended far enough to comfortably be under the water and not to close to the wall. The installation was pretty simple. We watched the video provided with the product before installing and it went quite smooth.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by SWong Excellent retrofit if you need a handheld showerhead and adjustable shower bar
This shower rail retrofit kit is one of the nicest Kohler bathroom upgrades made and will play nicely with other manufacturers of shower faucets such as Grohe. We recently completed our basement bathroom and this will be a perfect addition to retrofitting our Grohe tub/shower faucet to now include a hand showerhead. The polished chrome finish blends in nicely with our Grohe 19822 fixture and also adds a added handhold on the shower bar. Because it has the Kohler name you can rest assured it will be adequately supported with replacement parts years down the road. I do wish I had this in my possession "during" our bathroom renovation as I would have been able to properly install additional 2x4 wood bracing prior to the durock install. While it appears to be securely anchored to the wall I am reluctant to use the shower arm as a handhold and would definitely NOT put my full body weight to the shower beam. Be sure and have both a showerhead and especially the handheld showerhead before installation as you will need them to complete this upgrade.

This was a new installation for me, of this type. This installation was easy for me. I do have some experience at these things, so it may vary for other people.
The appearance of this unit, is bright and shiney, yet clean in design. It's quite functional, and feels well made. It ads an updated sophistication to a basic shower, which I do like.
I fitted this with a square rain can type shower head, and I am happy with it. I did get some compliments on it.
Overall, if you are looking for a modern style, and good functionality, this fits the bill. I recommend it.

Now that is what I needed to finish off the bathroom show. A Must have for a high end shower, I added 2 just for that extra water flow and make it more flexible after a long day of yard work to relax and have an extra stream of water to sooth aching bones and joints.. it was a breeze to install and make your show look like it belongs in a multi million dollar home. I am a DIYR and this was truly easy install and now Ido enjoy it,

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by cb88 Decrative and Functional Dual Shower Option
If you want both a fixed shower head like a rain model in addition to a hand wand, then this is one of the classiest options on the market. However, if your spouse does not like holes put in the wall, then you may be in for a fight if this is an upgrade instead of a new install. I finally convinced her to let me drill a few holes for the mounting points, but it was stressful not knowing if I would accidentally drill into an existing water line. This would have been child's play on a new install, but an upgrade to an existing shower may be too much risk. The only issue I really had was the installation Allen key was missing for one of the fittings and I again worried that I would screw up the installation. Looks great, but installation is much more difficult than a standard shower head.

This is a high quality Kohler product and is a bit pricy. The nice valve allows water to flow to a hand held shower or up to the overhead shower head. This Model K-45212 is good for a bathtub and that's where it is now. In my other shower the door would hit the shower head when swung in. So, That's when I put it in the tub shower. And I ordered Model K-45211 which is 4" taller to clear the shower door perfectly. I am very happy with my two upper grade professional shower columns. The rain shower is extended 18" from the wall. Installation instructions are very good, although not easy and requires good carpentry skills and tools. It was hard for me to drill 4- 1/2" holes into my marble wall. No mistakes! Also, the anchors are tricky to fit through thick green board plus, thick shower wall. I broke my second anchor and it fell inside the wall. The plastic guide straps are not to be bent much. I rigged up a conventional spring loaded anchor and held it in place with fine stainless wire. This trick added two hours to my first install totalling 4 hrs of sweat. You need a very bright beam light to see into the anchor holes to guide it into place and see the long stainless screws going into the nut. The upper water pipe elbow may be a chore to work the anchor around. My second install, having experience and tools at hand took 90 minutes to complete. Although expensive enough, the hydrorail does not include shower heads, nor hose. Many, many choices from Home Depot from cheap to upper crust Kohler products. I got a 10" square thin plate rain shower head and it's great. And the optional handheld with hose ranges greatly too.
