Is this exterior only? Or can I use it inside? I need a white paintable caulk that doesn't crack. I used DAP Alex Fast dry around all of my window trim and then painted. A few months later, it's all cracked.
Asked by: Laurie
I wouldn't use it inside because of the mess but you could. If your having problems with cracking then your not leaving enough product to go through the expansion-contraction process. I'm actually a custom cabinet builder and trim carpenter and only use latex caulking inside but during installation I allow enough room for minimum 1/8" of caulking so it won't crack. Without knowing what your tying to caulk this is the best info I can give you

Can the PL S40 Polyurethane sealant be painted prior to the 7 day cure period?

Asked by: Guiseppe1970
I'm holding a used tube of PL S40 right here in my sweaty little hand. Interesting that I find no instruction on the tube about waiting 7 days before painting, and in fact I find no instructions whatsoever on the tube. Isn't that interesting. Regarding the other question about date, this tube has what appears to be "3R3217K42" on the rear sliding closure that the caulk gun pushes on, although it's really hard to tell for sure. Perhaps "Loctite Consumer Relations" would like to share with us how to decode the secret date code that they claim is in there so we can avoid buying more tubes that are already half cured.

Will this product accept stain?

Will this product accept stain?
Asked by: FL
Latex based stain yes, but the caulking is white so coverage and bleed through may be an issue

I have been using this product for 12 or 13 years and would use nothing else for my own or a customers home. It is difficult to work with but a few tricks will help. The tube must be warm. Using a cold tube will be frustrating and I've broken a caulking gun trying to do so. Set the tube in the sun for a couple hours or put a few tubes in an electric blanket on low for 30 minutes. Only use a high quality caulking gun, I use one designed for epoxy adhesives but I do this a lot and they're expensive. Tool the caulking with a putty knife and keep the knife clean with paint thinner. The product is very sticky and takes 3 to 4 days to cure enough to paint. If there is ANY moisture on the surface this will not adhere so wait until the surface is completely dry before caulking. This year I got my first call back on a house I sided and painted 10 years ago and only about 1 foot had failed at the bottom of a window and it was on the weather side. Cannot recommend this highly enough just follow the tricks and you'll have no problem.

I've always had good luck with Loctite products, and this stuff is no exception. It isn't the easiest to work with -- think very aggressive glue -- but it sticks, it lasts a long time, and it seems to be unfazed by rain, cold, sun, etc. My elderly mother has a large picture window in her home with an old-fashioned multi-pane storm window protecting it. The storm window was leaking, and on closer inspection, I could see that it had been improperly maintained -- and subsequently neglected -- for years. The glazing had been replaced with some sort of putty in some places and with what looked like silicone caulk in others. I simply didn't have time to clean everything out and re-glaze the window properly, so -- very hesitantly -- I decided to try this stuff out. Where I could get the old glazing/caulking out with a razor knife, I did, and everywhere else, I just put this right over the the old material and at the edges in the cracks. I was amazed. It took a few days to dry, it wasn't easy to work with, and I had to work it in the cracks and gaps with a flexible putty knife, but checking on it a few months later, I'm very pleased with the results. It's hardened to a tough, rubbery texture; it seems to have stuck to wood (even where damp), glass, old paint and glazing, etc., equally well. It has taken care of the leaks, and it has come through the winter with no perceptible cracking or separation. This might not be exactly what this was intended to do, but I was mostly focused on stopping the progression of water and weather damage for a few years until my mom is ready to sell her house. It did the trick. I'll buy it again.

I have successfully used this sealant and PL Premium adhesive in manny projects over the years. The urethane base allows it to adhere to many different materials without failing. Being a urethane has it's quirks when applying but the end result is worth it. Sometimes a latex caulk is good enough but if you only want to do it once then this should be your choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Sealant of Choice I've been using this for awhile around the house and I used to use it when I had an RV. I have gotten away from silicone as I feel it loses it's adhesiveness to the suface to soon. Hence no more sealing. Also you can't paint over it or apply another sealant over it. This stuff is tough and sticks and stays. It's great on RV's as it's flexible and paintable. I like the heavier density of it to work with it. I'll agree it does dry kind of fast. I keep all my sealants/adhesives plugged and in a mini fridge. Saves wa$te. Great product! Not to be a wise acre.... but did the guy who can't get it out of the tube puncture the seal inside the nozzle??

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Caulk - But Use It Quickly This is great caulk. It sticks tenaciously, stays flexible, and does not break down from weathering. The problem is shelf life. If you're a contractor and use multiple tubes per week then you're good. If you're a homeowner doing small fix up jobs you will waste a lot more of this caulk than you actually use. That's because it hardens in the tube in just a few weeks, even when unopened, and becomes unusable. Oh, I almost forgot, when used as directed it takes 3 days of warm temperatures before it's paintable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stuff wears like iron First, the cons. 1. This stuff is extremely hard to work with. It forms and feels like glue. Silicone is easy to work with a wet rag or even a damp finger. Not with this stuff. It will stay sticky on your hands for days. 2. Seven day cure time. 7 days!!! Now, the pros. 1. This stuff lasts and lasts. I've been a homeowner since the early 90's. I've tried silicone and latex calks. They are pure garbage. Even with the right prep, they just can't handle the wear and tear of being outside. PL S40 wears like iron. I don't know the life expectancy, but it's greater than 8 years and I would estimate closer to 12. I've never seen it fail, or even think of failing. Amazing stuff!! I just finished a restoration of an 85 year old wood garage door. 40 panels later, and I'm fully confident that door will good for the next 10-15 years based on my prior experience with this product. Do it once. Do it right. Use Loctite PL.
