Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. Customer Questions & Answers

True Color

At the top, the "black" option looks very gray in the color sample. However, in customer images, the floors/tile looks very dark. Can anyone confirm that their tile is in the "black" color and not "blue" and maybe attach a photo? Thanks.

WHAT IS THE MANDATORY SUBFLOOR FOR THIS TILE?

Not one person mentions the required doubled up plywood subfloor for this tile and all natural stone in their review, and I was wondering if I really need to double up my plywood subfloor before installing the 1/4" backer board like the TCNA Handbook recommends? Has anyone else done this? I can't imagine every reviewer that loves this tile laid another subfloor before installing. Most homes are not built for laying natural stone. Please advise.

Montauk Black 12 in. x 24 in. Gauged Slate Floor and Wall Tile (10 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 77.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, Durable Tile We used this tile in the mudroom from our garage. It has some variation in height due to the fact that it's a natural stone and has variation in color from gray to black. We tried to sort through the boxes to mix the colors throughout the room. It cut great with a wet saw, no cracking, even on all the corners I had with the herringbone pattern. We sealed it 2 times before grouting and had no problem with our sanded grout sticking to it, although we were diligent in keeping up with wiping the excess grout off. The condition of every tile was excellent as we opened each box. Overall, I think it will be a nice entrance that we'll enjoy for many years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy!! We are very happy with this tile after installing in our master bathroom shower. Since this is slate, it was hard to get everything level during the installation due to the varying depths of the tile. I sealed the tile multiple times before grouting and it was still a struggle to get the grout off the tile. We used the Fusion grout which dries super quick and was easily absorbed by the slate. This resulted in doing just a few inches of grout, cleaning and taking a wire brush to the tile to remove the grout that was absorbed by the slate. It was very tedious but it was worth it in the end. We used platinum grout which provides a nice contrast against the dark gray. Highly recommend!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tile guy said it was the best I bought this slate before we even hired an installer because we knew it was perfect for our bathroom floor. We used it throughout the bathroom and continued it into the zero entry shower. Our installer said it was the best slate he had ever used. It did not flake or chip when he cut it, and he said the sharp edges and uniform thickness made the installation easy. He said the stone was more like travertine in the way it was cut, so all the tiles butted together perfectly, very little grout was needed. Also, he was able to bullnose pieces to make tile baseboards around the whole room. We get lots of compliments!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great to look at This product had me from the moment I saw it online. When I opened the first box, I was a bit taken back, because it did not look quite the same as i thought it would. It was very dusty and dirty, and I was concerned it would not end up looking like I had hoped. It was very easy to cut and work with, and very strong (sometimes slate can be flakey until you get it glued and sealed, making it fragile while taking it out of the box and moving it around, not this stuff.) At the end of the project after plenty of sealing, it looks STUNNING. All in all a GREAT choice. Easy to clean AFTER sealed, but you must clean repeatedly prior to sealing it.

Final stage of install today - tile guy was very impressed with the product in terms of quality, sizing was spot-on and couldn't believe the price we paid. One entire box was broken but we'll be bringing it back for refund- not a big deal b/c we were advised to over-order in case something like that happened.
