Controls keep "locking"

This question is from 16-Bottle / 77 Can Dual-Zone Wine and Beverage Cooler

Just installed and have found the controls keep defaulting to the "locked" setting even after adjusting the lower section temperature. After a brief period the lock light comes on and stays on. Then the lower section doesn't change temperature and the light cannot be turned on/off. The manual seems to say that once you unlock the control panel it should stay that way until you manually lock it and locking the panel should not prevent the unit from cooling. Anyone else encounter this problem?.

Answer:
This is how it is supposed to act. It is stated in the manual that it will lock after a certain amount of time has passed.
Considering the original poster posted it in July 2014, and I got mine about 2 months ago, it's possible that they have updated the manual b then.

The same behavior exists in my replacement unit; however, this one cools just fine...
My conclusion is that the locking is actually a "feature"....

Can you tell me if the shelf in the lower section is adjustable, and if so, can it be placed so that there is a section with at least a 10" clearance for beer bottles, AND a section with at least a 5.5" clearance for cans?

Customer Reviews

16-Bottle / 77 Can Dual-Zone Wine and Beverage Cooler is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 302.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Understand the product before you by You will read a lot of bad reviews for the product but you have to understand what you are getting in order to be happy with it. First and foremost it is a beverage cooler not a refrigerator. Three months after installing my unit, the lower section stopped cooling. Immediately, I thought all of the negative comments were accurate and I had made a mistake. I decided to look at the unit and do some investigation before trying to take advantage of the warranty or return it. I discovered the entire back off the lower section was a block of ice behind the panel. The unit was not defrosting. I discovered that due to a poor design and configuration of shelves I had chosen, that I had set the unit up for failure. I had the top zone set at 40 degrees and the lower zone at 38 degrees. I realized that those two factors caused the compressor to run too much and not allow it to defrost. I unplugged the unit for a day, let it completely defrost, dried the unit out and started from scratch. First, I took every thing out of the unit including the shelves and turned it on. Within two hours both zones were cooling correctly.( I set the top zone at 41 degrees and the lower zone at 40 degrees. I added the racks to the top zone which caused the temp to rise a couple of degrees but within 15 minutes it was back to the set temp. I added the racks to the lower zone and the temp went up about 6 degrees and after an hour had not come down at all. I discovered my mistake was using a glass shelf between the fan and the temp sensor. Once I replaced the glass shelf with a wire rack, the temp went down to the preset temp. I then place a glass shelf above both the fan and the temp sensor and the unit had no problem maintaining the correct temp. after the unit had run at temp for several hours, I loaded the top with wine and water bottles. Anytime you load warm bottles, the temp will rise. This is to be expected. after about three and a half hours, the temp returned to the preset temp. I then loaded the lower half with about 40 sodas and 20 water bottles. I took about 5 hours for the lower unit to return to temp. Now that I have the right shelf configuration and I don't try to run the unit at its lower temp, it works flawlessly. The compressor runs less than half of the time it previously ran. If you follow these simple recommendations, I believe you too can enjoy this cooler. As far as I can tell the next closet comparable model is more than twice the price of this unit so i was easier for me to find a configuration that worked than spend twice the money. Remember these steps 1. Bring the unit to temp completely empty. 2. Add your shelf configuration and make sure it stays at temp, putting a glass shelf between either fan and the temp sensor for that zone is going to impact performance 3. When initially loading, load one zone at a time 4. Refill the unit at night when the door ca remain closed 6 or more hours. These simple steps will make you a happy customer

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Twice burned - do not buy We inherited one with the house. I could fix several of the problems (fan not working, bad electrical connections), but then it just stopped cooling and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Regrettably, we bought the same wine fridge because I had trouble finding the right dimensions to fit under our counter. The new one lasted 3 months before it stopped cooling. The warranty process was okay, until they determined it was too expensive to fix. So, now I am left with a 100 lb paper weight that I have to haul off to recycling...again. They did refund the purchase price...but not tax. You will lose money on this purchase and the environment will not thank you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad product I bought a dual temperature wine cooler ( undercounter version) in March of 2015. Starting August of 2016 the unit fails to keep the temperature down. The coolest I get is 64F for the upper space and 75F for the lower space. I called the Magic Chef company to give me a list of repair shops in my area (it is out of warranty). They say that there are no repair services listed in my area that repair MC wine coolers. I read the other reviews (too late): there are lots of people experiencing the same very issue. I do not recommend this product. This is a poor quality product

Small negatives: hard to fit beer bottles standing up without taking too much space, but that's a constant theme on beverage centers Huge negative: this unit is a piece of junk. Had 2 repairs under warranty. The bottom section repeatedly froze up and then couldn't cool below 50 degrees or so, except the way back of the fridge where soda cans would freeze and explode. Had the guts (circuit board and compressor) replaced at least twice, never fixed the issue. Was told this was nowhere near unheard of for this product. Then warranty ran out and they wouldn't fix the issue despite it happening in warranty at first.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT GOOD AVOID this cooler! First, they are very noisy and they get noisier as time goes on and it gets very irritating. This alone is enough reason to avoid this, especially in a newly remodeled kitchen, every other appliance runs whisper quite, but not this. Additionally, the thermostat has issues and when you google this appliance or read other reviews there are actually videos on how to take apart the dividing shelf and repair the issues that make the thermostat go haywire! Really? I need to take aprt a NEW APPLICABLE and correct a manufactures defect??? Really bad choice, NEVER AGAIN will I but a MAGIC CHEF appliance and I will suggest to avaoid at all costs to anyone considering this appliance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do NOT waste your money on this unit!! Purchased early for a new home and by the time we tried it out long enough - found out it did not keep temps below the high 40 's and then it was out of warranty . Spent another $250 to repair , thinking, well it should work now rather than trashing it. Now out that money too and it still is not keeping temp that it is set at -and the recirculation not working correctly or something so there is ice built up inside the back of unit. have to pull out and thaw and then it is going in the trash!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buyer Beware - I went against reviews and purchased anyways sadly I was let down. What I loved about this fridge is the features. In this price range you will be hard pressed to find another fridge that can cool beer/soda and keep wine. What stinks is the fridge lasted about 4 months until the fan on the lower portion of the fridge went out. They sent out A&E services which was a nightmare of a company to work with in and of itself. When A&E finally inspected the fridge they ordered a new fan and control unit. Several weeks later the parts were installed. The fridge worked properly for 5 days after install then failed again. Magic chef determined the fridge to be irreparable and fully refunded my money. The fridge was purchased in December 2015 issues began in late april. Between scheduling of service visits to getting refund was about 4 months. It was a painful process, save your time and energy find a more reliable fridge.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed - Stopped working in less than 1yr I needed an under counter beverage cooler for my basement bar. I was afraid of all the reviews but still bought this one. Seemed like no beverage cooler rated well anyway. It worked fine for the first few months, but seemed to run quite a bot even if it was set to 42 deg F on both top and bottom. Now, it just runs and runs and runs and cannot cool down. The funny thing is that I adjusted the temp up a few degrees just to get it to turn off, and it would not turn off. So, I just turned it off. I really feel like I made a $500 mistake with this purchase. I would love to swap it with a new one and give it another shot.
