Product Overview

The Milwaukee 48-89-2329 1/2 in. Thunderbolt Cobalt drill bits are designed for extreme durability and long life in specialty applications. The Thunderbolt web features a thicker core than a standard drill bit, which provides ultimate strength and protects against side-load breakage. A specially designed parabolic flute form clears chips and debris fast to keep the bit cool. A precision start, 135-degree Split Point tip starts on contact to keep the bit from walking for fast accurate holes. Excellent for drilling on curved surfaces, requires less effort to drill and is highly recommended for use with portable drills.

  • Longer life: titanium coating reduces heat build-up for up to 3x longer life
  • Extreme durability: thicker web provides greater strength
  • Fast, accurate drilling: 135-degree split point tip starts on contact to prevent walking, while the parabolic flute clears chips fast
  • Extreme durability: designed for high performance with stainless steel, high alloy steel and cast iron

Customer Questions & Answers

Question is about Thunderbolt Cobalt drill bit specifications

Item description does not specify either hardness (M42, M36, etc.) or Cobalt percentage (5%, 8%, etc.). Are these bit solid Cobalt Alloy Steel or simply coated High Speed Steel bits? Item description also says they are Titanium coated, probably a typo.
Asked by: ztywa6
Solid cobalt and titanium coated. I used this bit to drill through a grade 8 bolt and stainless steel. Used new bits both times. Light lubricant recommended during use. I've used non-titanium coated bits before and they work just as good.

I drilled 10 holes through 3/8" steel plate before the first bit seemed to be getting dull. I bought the second bit and it broke on the 1st try, so the original bit was used to finish all 18 holes. The photo was after 18 holes were finished.

SO MUCH BETTER THAN "Black and Yellow Brand" BITS. I used this bit to drill about 50 holes in 1/4 inch mild plate steel and it doesn't show any signs of dulling or wear. I have tried the "Black and yellow Brand" black oxide, titanium, and cobalt bits - each set became completely dull or snapped off after less than 10 holes. I would definitely buy this bit again - you cannot beat it for the price. Below is a video of the bit in my benchtop drill press: https://youtu.be/TnXOs6yHkMs

The holes these bits were producing in 1/8 mild steel were out of round almost triangle in shape and the edge finish in the holes was terrible. Being the most expensive 1/2 bit in the store I would expect much better performance. I was drilling on a drill press and it was a night and day difference between the Milwaukee and dewalt. I will never buy these bits again. In the image hole with dewalt bits on left. Brand new Milwaukee on right.

I used this drill bit successfully to drill 1 hole in 1/4" angled stainless steel. I used oil to keep it cooler and it performed very well. Effortless to be more precise. On the second hole, it got down > 3/4 of the way and then started smoking and got red hot. The tip of this bit warped and reduced in diameter. One should expect this 10X cobalt bit to drill more than one hole. Very disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NOT FOR USE IN 400 SERIES STAINLESS This bit is good for 300 series or lower for stainless. I was attempting to drill into anealed 420 stainless and this bit dulled and left only a small dent. Good cutting oil was used too. I will never throw money out the door on this brand and type of "stainless cutting" bit again.

I needed to drill about 20 holes total in some 3/16" bent plate steel to build a rack and the drill bit held up well and is still sharp afterwards. its better to drill at a slower speed and let the bit cool between drilling when drilling thru steel, which worked for my project.
