Product Overview

The Milwaukee 48-89-2329 1/2 in. Thunderbolt Cobalt drill bits are designed for extreme durability and long life in specialty applications. The Thunderbolt web features a thicker core than a standard drill bit, which provides ultimate strength and protects against side-load breakage. A specially designed parabolic flute form clears chips and debris fast to keep the bit cool. A precision start, 135-degree Split Point tip starts on contact to keep the bit from walking for fast accurate holes. Excellent for drilling on curved surfaces, requires less effort to drill and is highly recommended for use with portable drills.

  • Longer life: titanium coating reduces heat build-up for up to 3x longer life
  • Extreme durability: thicker web provides greater strength
  • Fast, accurate drilling: 135-degree split point tip starts on contact to prevent walking, while the parabolic flute clears chips fast
  • Extreme durability: designed for high performance with stainless steel, high alloy steel and cast iron

Item description does not specify either hardness (M42, M36, etc.) or Cobalt percentage (5%, 8%, etc.).
Are these bit solid Cobalt Alloy Steel or simply coated High Speed Steel bits?
Item description also says they are Titanium coated, probably a typo.

Answer:
The Cobalt is an additive to the steel (not a surface finish). Cobalt bits 7/16” and larger are made out of M42, diameters under 7/16” are M35

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great bit I used this bit to drill into my trucks frame to install a hitch. It did awsome and still looks like new after drilling 8 holes in really hard metal. October 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Worked very well. Stayed sharp after drilling many holes through 3/16" steel Stayed sharp after drilling many holes through 3/16" steel. September 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Impressive drill bit This is a fast cutting, aggressive drill bit. Yet while being aggressive, it actually takes small bites, resulting in quick yet smooth drilling, with little “catching” or binding. It also appears to be very durable, I have drilled a dozen holds in ¼ inch steel, and the bits shows no sign of dulling. I like the 3 flats cut on the shank, preventing the bit from slipping in the chuck, which can be a problem with larger bits and more powerful drills. While cobalt bits are considerably more expensive than HSS, their longer life and ability to drill harder materials outweighs the additional cost. October 21, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Got dull very fast compared to other cobalt drill brands. I attempted to drill through a loose car wheel stud using this drill bit and it got dull after about 1/4". My car had two loose spinning wheel studs and I used a Bosch brand bit and Irwin brand bit to drill one all the way off and the second stud about half way off before they got dull. Those bits were also cheaper than this bit. March 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible I was able to drill about 1/4" into cast iron with the bit before the ends rounded over. I bought a dewalt bit & drilled 7 holes with no problem. Don't waste your money. December 8, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Decent quality I thought this was a premium drill bit- as with other brands, they all are sub par quality in professional applications - the bits that harbor freight sells are just as good IF not better and normally sell for a 1/4 of the price... Disappointed. Again... HD should carry a "higher" line or lower their prices. November 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bit worked great! We purchased these bits because we were replacing a deck on our 35' flatbed. We broke 6 DeWalt bits and the young man at Home Depot recommended this bit. We finished over 1/2 of the deck on one bit! Great performance! October 4, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by So so drill bit Used to drill out exhaust manifold studs that broke off and it went dull a lot quicker than it should of. Was junk after the job was done. October 18, 2016
