The Milwaukee 10-1000V Dual Range Voltage Detector is the first Non-Contact Voltage Detector with the ability to Light Up, Detect, and Differentiate Automatically. The expanded sensitivity ranges of 10-49V offers the ability to detect voltage in common systems that would normally go undetected when using a standard voltage detector. It can be, but you'd be better off with a tester that has actual leads or a clamp style if you intend to accurately read voltage/amperage/ohms.

What does "Auto Ranging" mean or do ?

Auto Ranging is a feature whereby the voltage detector will automatically detect the voltage without having to select from a narrow range of voltages. Just point the detector at an outlet, for instance, and the voltage will be detected and displayed.

I had to order this because it is not carried in store, it got good reviews and I liked the idea of a light too. I am a DIY person and wanted to change all my switches to new rocker style, the 3 way switches did not work properly when finished and I had wired them like the old switches, but they did not work after changing them. Disappointed that this project was so difficult. Was hoping this tester would help me find the positive wire to diagnose the problem, but this tester was so sensitive that all 3 wires tested positive. I had high hopes, guess I will be returning this tester.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sensitive down to low voltages with work light This is a really great non-contact voltage tester. It can detect voltages in the range of 10 to 1,000 Volts. A yellow LED blinks for the 10-49V range while a red LED blinks for the 50-1,000V range. A different audible tone is generated for each range as well so even if you can't see which color LED is on for some reason, you can tell by the loud, piercing tones being generated. This can detect voltages lower than other electrical test pens I've seen and used so you can use it when testing either line voltage or low voltage wires. A white LED serves as a flashlight while the detector is on which is helpful since you'll be using this a lot to double-check the power is off after turning off the breaker. It's fairly bright. The detector will turn itself off after 5 minutes do you don't accidentally drain the 2 AAA batteries while not in use. When you first turn the detector on it will beep twice and you'll see a green power LED as well as the flashlight so you know it's on but it's a good idea to test it against a known live wire to make sure it's working properly. The tip can be inserted into a slot in an outlet but I find it's so sensitive that you can just hold it close to the outlet and it will start beeping. To be on the safe side though, always check the outlet by inserting the probe into each slot. On switched outlets, once I switched the power off, the beeping and lights turned off. It's very sensitive and even started beeping indicating a 10-49V signal when I held it up against some USB cables which are 5V DC. Worked on the 24V cables that run to my thermostat and even the doorbell wiring. If you rub it quickly back and forth on carpet it even beeps, I guess from the static electricity? It doesn't just randomly beep by waiving it quickly in the air, except in my office near a ton of computer equipment. While this can differentiate fairly well between high and low voltages, you shouldn't rely on it to be a substitute for a multimeter (which Milwaukee also makes too.) This is a tool that is helpful in quickly diagnosing problems (like finding out which bulb is burnt out in a string of Christmas lights, or seeing if power is getting to a light or outlet) and to make sure there is no power running to a box before you start doing some electrical work. It works really well for its intended purpose and is much faster than busting out the multimeter, unwrapping the probes, removing the protective tips and then making sure you you have good contact with the hot and neutral wires. Just pull it out of your pocket, tap the switch on and place it on the wires and you know if there's power or not.
