Customer Questions & Answers

Water heater vent pipe

What do I need in order to replace my water heater single core vent pipe with a double core vent pipe? Is there a kit for double core water vent pipes that is available?
Asked by: Charlie
First off why is your water heater vented with single wall???If you're in a mobile home there will be a double wall kit for your water heater. If you're in a house just use type B double wall vent pipe. It has to be at least 6'' to 12'' inside then you can go with single wall if you have enough clearance for single wall (6'' all the way around combustibles.

why does it have to be bottom vented also, not just top vented???

Asked by: shadylady
The bottom vent is for intake of combustion air from the exterior of the home. This is actually one smaller flue inside of a larger one. They both extend through the roof.

can i vent my pellet stove into it? we took out the gas fireplace. How much heat can it take, or how hot.

Asked by: gail
Hi gail, I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site. Temperature capacities are not listed in the operator's manual, so I have to be conservative in my opinion and recommend AGAINST using this vent on a pellet stove. According to a Care and Use Manual from a pellet stove company: 1. Check with the building inspector’s office for compliance with local codes; a permit may be required. 2. Use 3” or 4” (76-102mm) diameter type “L” or “PL” venting system. It can be vented vertically or horizontally. Approved adaptors can be used to connect the “L” or” PL” to approved wood stove venting such as single wall or double wall venting previously used to vent a wood burning appliance. INSTALL VENT AT CLEARANCES SPECIFIED BY THE VENT MANUFACTURE. 3. Always connect this unit to an approved chimney system and NEVER vent to another room or inside a building. 4. DO NOT INSTALL A FLUE DAMPER IN THE EXHAUST VENTING SYSTEM OF THIS UNIT. 5. DO NOT CONNECT THIS UNIT TO A CHIMNEY FLUE SERVING ANOTHER APPLIANCE. This excerpt from Pleasant Hearth stresses the importance of using the proper vent system, intended for that SPECIFIC appliance. The manual for the water heater vent states the same warning: "No other roof jack or air inlet assemblies are approved for installation with the manufactured housing direct vent gas water heater." The ventilation system must be properly applied to maintain product and consumer safety. DO NOT use a vent system that is not specifically intended for use with your heat system. Thank you for asking. Travis

Customer Reviews

Mobile Home Direct Vent Kit for Home Gas Water Heater is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from no mobile home fan It was pretty easy to install. very adjustable for the roof penetration angle and to reach the water heater. it came pretty banged up, the chimney and combustion air piece was just in a box with no packaging around it. must of moved around a lot. I would have to blame some of it on the shipping company but could of been packed better. All in all it worked.
