Q:when stacking them on top of each other for a retain wall, do they have to step back each level? or can they go on top of each other flush for a straight vertical wall?

Answer This Question

A:  We haven't installed these in a couple years but when we did they had a lip maybe 1/2" or so on the bottom so that they don't slide/collapse catastrophically forward into the walkway/patio/etc. So in order to go flush vertical you would have to grind/knock off the lip on each block. If you do go the grind off route, depending on your installation circumstances (is the wall decorative only or actually retaining a load?) it would be a very good idea to otherwise anchor the blocks with an adhesive caulk or mortar or similar.

Efflorescence NIGHTMARE!
I had bought these blocks years ago for a wall in the backyard, it looked great. I was excited to replace an aging wall in the front yard. This last summer I did. Almost immediately I noticed that white streaks were forming from the top down. Neighbors have actually asked if someone spray-painted my wall they're so obvious. I have tried pressure washing, scrubbing with simple green, vinegar, and CLR...trying muriatic acid next. I'm incredibly disappointed

    Beautiful Product!
Once the first row is set straight and level, these blocks go up pretty quickly and easily, and they look beautiful! We built a 100’ long retaining wall along a sloped driveway, so we had a lot of first rows to set, but the end result was worth all the work. We get so many compliments on how nice these blocks look, and I like the fact they have a more natural stone-like appearance compared to most retaining wall materials. These are high quality blocks, with nice color variation and consistent quality among the pallets we bought. Not a broken block in the bunch! I will definitely use these again, and highly recommend them. They are worth the extra money we spent.

I built a 45' retaining wall last summer and a 25' wall thia summer. The first batch i ordered this year were aweful. Unfortunately i ordered them in April to make sure i could them, they sat in my driveway for a couple months, then i had the kids carry them to the back yard. I started building the wall and noticed ALL the fronts were crumbling and they had no color variations they were plain old cement color. I called home depot, they told me ibhad to deconstruct the wall and put them back on the pallet for pickup... not happy about that, as they were my adult kids and would not be here to help. Home depot said they would have a new delivery of blocks to me that week by Friday. Thursday i received a call saying they didn't get the shipment, but another store had some they could bring to me, i was sceptical because i needed to make sure the blocka werent call crumbling like the last, and had a variation in color.. this delayed my blocks for another week and a half. Finally they got their shipment in and now i was told the fronts look good but there are no tan ones... at this point i said just bring them...there were a few tan but not many and the were definately a slighty smaller size than last year. This meant that I could not use my remaining blocks from the previous wall.. bummer at 3 bucks each.. however they do stack nicley (after the 1st row is in) and the wall looks great. I suggest you buy all you need at 1 time to make sure your stones match. Next time i think i will go with manor stone. It looks great and is almost 1/2 the price...

      Nice quality block
This is a nice upgrade from the standard style retaining wall block. Great color combination/style and adding the capstone really sets it off.

        A very doable, rewarding project!
Wanted a corner, raised flower bed without having to do too much cutting or concrete work. The blocks were great to install and the project was done in about 2 half days.

            Fire pit
I used these retaining wall blocks to build a fire pit. Most kits are about 30 diameter burning area and I wanted a larger area and didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars. I simply modified the blocks by hammering off the lip to flatten each block. A rock hammer tool is ideal for this but a regular hammer will work. The outer diameter is about 5 ft and the inn is about 4ft or 48 inches. The cost of the 48 blocks was about $140. Enjoy the pic and video!

            Good blocks
I built a 75 linear foot retaining wall using about 400 bricks. First of all, I ordered these online because I needed 400 (I accidentally ordered 500 but home depot happily returned them) and the shipping went flawless and none were damaged during shipment; however, they did have scuff marks which I'm sure will come off with time. Also, the colors were varied and I got a little more of the tan ones. Also, you should use construction glue when stacking these because the lips were damaged (looks like form the factory) on a lot of them and could probably not hold up to much pressure. It took me about a week to dig the trench (working a few hours each day) because the ground was very compacted and then I filled it with liner and paver base with sand on top. I started placing the blocks and leveling them with a torpedo level and a carpenters level. However, I ran into an issue because a few of the blacks were not flat at the top! This is why the torpedo level came in handy. Make sure to look for these. After laying down the first layer, the next ones were easy to place, however, on curves the blocks wont always fit right so you may have to remove the lip from them to get the turn to work better. Some tips: Be sure to remove the lips on the ones that are at the base, remove lips off turns and use construction glue, alternate color and design randomly, dont forget to add wall caps at the top for a cleaner look. Do these and you should have a nice wall! Oh and before I forget, thanks to Home Depot for refunding me the difference of the regular price and the promotional price of the bricks! I ordered the bricks a week before they went on sale and they gave me back the difference.

            Great stones
These stones were great. I ordered a pallet and did a retaining wall and a flower bed. Out of 144 stones maybe 10-15 were broke beyond use, but overall they look amazing. I was able to use some of the designs from others to make my wall really pop. To build a wall/bed you need- shovel/hoe, river pebbles or sand, dead blow hammer, beer, pizza, a level, something to cut the stone (I used 7 inch masonary blade for circular saw), cocnrete adhesive if putting caps on. tips- start at low spot, use spray paint or string for straight line, use 1 foot and 4 foot levels, use sand or river pebble rocks to help level, plan your drainage, dont over use the circular saw blade as it overheats easily. Also I had the pallet delivered for $65 or so, which was better than I would have guessed. Also, you spend 90% of your time getting the base level and ready, then it goes up fast.

              Easy to work with
I removed one star for variations in the color. As others mentioned, you have to dig through pallets to find what you think the color should be. Because uncapped stones look too much "DYI" to me due to triangular holes and there are no corner blocks, for best result expect to cut the stones. Diamond blade on a circular saw is your minimum investment. This generates a lot of dust, so be sure to use a respirator and a fan. I set the top with a mortar and filled a spaces on the caps as if they were tiles. This should be fine for a small area where it doesn't snow.
