Product Overview

The Emsco Group RESCUE 50 Gal. Earth Brown Rain Water Urn features an integrated planter and an easy-to-install, patented downspout diverter kit which fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts. The downspout diverter will automatically keep your rain barrel full when rain has fallen and bypass the rain barrel when full preventing overfilling and overflowing which can cause flooding. This rain barrel kit collects rainwater to be both environmentally-friendly and money-saving by helping reduce your dependence on municipal or well water. In addition, your plants will thrive using pure, soft rain water instead of the processed water from your tap which can contain elements harmful to your plants. An added feature about the diverter system is that it does not have to be removed during the winter season. The diverter and rain barrel can be by-passed so that water flows through the downspout as usual, keeping water from getting into the rain barrel and freezing. The integrated planter can be planted directly into or a pre-arranged floral basket can be used to adorn the top of the rain barrel. The planter area includes a weep hole, allowing excess water to drain out preventing plant stress or death due to over-watering and root rot.

  • Environmentally-friendly decorative water urn collects rain from your downspout to reduce your need for municipal or well water, helping you save money
  • Made from UV-stable, engineered resin for durability with the look of brown earth
  • Built-in large planter has weep holes to help prevent over watering and root rot
  • Kit includes our patented dual downspout diverter, a 36 in. connection hose, connection grommets, a barb plug, a 48 in. main outlet hose with on/off ball cock valve, 2 hose gaskets and an illustrated installation guide
  • Diverter system automatically redirects water down the downspout when the urn is full
  • Easy-to-install downspout diverter kit fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts
  • Linkable in groups of two or more
  • Holds up to 50 Gal. of rainwater
  • Can be connected to a soaker hose for convenient automatic watering of nearby plants/gardens
  • Rainwater is ideal for watering plants and gardens, rainwater is at ambient temperatures which plant enjoy and it contains no chlorine or other chemicals
  • Back of rain barrel is flat to sit closely to side of house or building for a low profile and attractive appearance

Customer Questions & Answers

does it come with a spigit?

Asked by: McWeth
It comes with a short hose and an on-off valve which you could put on the barrel or the end of the hose.

Does the "Diverter Kit" work? Looks like a lot of water will still go through the middle hole of the Diverter.

The instructions don't mention how the water normally flows through the downspout.
Asked by: JE66213
It works, but not well. I would estimate that about 25% of the water coming down the spout gets diverted into the barrel - the rest continues down the downspout. The tube that comes off of the diverter is so small that only a small amount of water can flow into the barrel at a time.

Is the area where you connect the hose brass or plastic?

Asked by: Sheri
It is plastic, and after six months, the connection is leaking. Tightening doesn't work, and I think the problem is in the end of the small hose that comes with the unit. It is some kind of yellow metal, I don't think it is brass. I think it is cracked, but I can't find out until the barrel is empty. Unfortunately I am losing precious Southern California rainwater.

Is the top of the rain barrel removeable for access to interior? Can we view the manual?

Asked by: Timothy
The top is not able to be removed, there is no access to the interior other then the hole you make for the diverter tube and the threaded drain at the base. I was hoping the top would be able to be taken off to be cleaned or in case of debris but have not had an issue yet

The first shipment was lost so Home Depot shipped the items again, unfortunately, one of the two barrels was damaged and did not include installation instructions. I honestly think it was previously returned, was recycled and I was the unlucky recipient. The product is not at all what I expected. I needed to purchase additional downspouts and elbows and you need to drill through the resin so it's not as "easy to install" as the product overview makes it sound. Believe me I have had rain barrels in the past! I gave it a 2 rating only because it looks pretty (if it's not damaged that is - I painted the damaged one) If they carried rain barrels in the brick and mortar store, I would have taken them back!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tip for setting up. I suggest putting the connector hose into the water diverted before attaching the water diverted. I bought 2. The first one I had the rubber in the opening break when putting it in. The company sent me a replacement in days. The second one, I put the hose in first and set up went fast. Urn filled up with first rain.

I also like that it included a diverter kit. However, it is intended to be a sealed container, and I use a submersible pump when I need to withdraw water for my flower and veggie beds. I also like to daisy-chain barrels at the bottom, so that they all fill to the same level, as opposed to filling one and then having the "overflow" fed into a second barrel. With a drill and short pieces of hose, I've made this work the way I want. And I cut a circular hole in the top of one to drop in by submersible pump. As for the integrated planter -- I nice idea, but I don't intend to use it.

It took a while to get rain here in southern California, but now that it is full it works well. However, with our last heavy rains the hose attachment at the bottom is leaking. We have tightened it, but it still leaks quite a bit. Unfortunately, until the barrel is empty we can't replace it. I can't find the receipt, so I guess the hose assembly can't be replaced by the company. I am disappointed about that and also losing our precious rain water. Additionally, as some people have pointed out, the flat back side does bow out when full. That isn't a critical concern for us however because it sits on a patio and not against a wall. Just hope it doesn't burst.

However, you don't realize that 50G's does not get you much if you have even a small yard. If you plan to buy this planter for looks, buy a few of them. My HOA wouldn't allow a big ugly barrel in the front hence I had to purchase this and it's just fine. One BIG mistake is that I put it on 2 cinder blocks and elevated it about 10 inches from the ground. That works fine as long as the barrel is full but when it starts receding your water output will become an issue. Ensure that your barrel is placed at least 2-3 feet off the ground and above the areas that you need to water as water will not flow up and the output is extremely weak. All and all, a sturdy looking barrel that is easy on the eye and the installation wasn't too bad.
