Thank you for your interest in RIDGID!
If you are doing a lead paint renovation project this is not recommended. There is a different model of HEPA vacuum needed for that kind of job.
For the other question, yes the VF6000 filter can be cleaned and wash.

I use them to protect the filter from most of the dust and debris from wood working and sanding dry wall etc. All of the debris are collected inside the bag and the filter stays cleaner. The bag, when full, can be easily disposed and the inside of the shop vac and the filter stay cleaner.
In the past I used a stiff brush to remove dust bunnies, sawdust, dry wall dust and debris from the folds of the filter first and then used a leaf blower to blow off the filter (do this outside because it makes a cloud of dust) . This works well and makes the shop vac more efficient with a clean filter. A year ago I started to use the filter bags and they work extremely well.

The RIDGID® filters will not fit the Craftsman vacs. Therefore, the VF5000 5 layer Allergen filter may not replace the Craftsman 17912 filter.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 53 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No wood dust Great filter. Need foam filter to protect it from getting a hole punched from wood chip August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by worth it had not used a filter of this expense before, but used it inside for drywall dust and am very pleased, i can't say how long this would last in a commercial application but for home dyi i'd highly recommend it. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product The filter was easy to install. We used it for a kitchen remodel to clean up concrete dust and drywall dust. Collected a lot of dust before needing to empty it. Made site clean up much easier. January 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Suitable for Fine Drywall Dust or Hazardous Materials Purchased the Ridgid WD1851, the VF6000 HEPA filter, and the Ridgid High-Efficiency Dust Bags. My intended use for the vacuum was drywall sanding, sawdust, and general purpose garage/workshop cleaning. I outfitted it with the VF6000 filter and a dust bag because I figured that this would be a fool proof way of not inhaling drywall compound dust when sanding with a drywall sander attachment. I was WRONG. Upon sanding my first drywall project in a non-ventilated, enclosed basement - I found that fine dust was being ejected by the vacuum at a very high rate. I felt it in my mouth and lungs first and then taking a walk around the room I could see a fine smoke-like dust completely filling the air in the room. Despite Ridgid's advertising the VF6000 filter is not suitable for drywall and DEFINITELY not suitable for hazardous material such as lead, rodent droppings, or mold. I figured using the dust bag would help too, but somehow the drywall dust made it right through/past that. Upon further research and reading the fine print, I found out that the material used on the VF6000 RIDGID filter is HEPA rated; however the filter assembly itself is NOT certified to HEPA standards and is NOT considered a HEPA filter. Nasty game Ridgid is playing with this. My fault for not paying close enough attention. Upon looking at the filter more closely - it appears that the top and bottom of the ribs is not sealed. On a HEPA filter the filter should be completely embedded in rubber. I've heard the Gore Cleanstream filter is a better fit. Aside from the ribs, it is possible that the fine drywall dust escaped from the seal between the filter and the vacuum assembly, as there is no weatherstripping and the rubber itself may be a bit firm to provide a completely airtight seal as you'd require for keeping drywall sanding dust contained. I'm going to give the cleanstream a try to see if that works, but I am not happy at all about the first experience and wish I'd just gone with a more expensive HEPA certified vacuum, rather than taking the budget route. January 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ridgid filter replacement placed in ridged vacuum to clean pellet stove ashes. the filter keeps the majority of the dust inside the vacuum cleaner. I haven't tries to clean the filter yet, so time will tell if it is worth the extra cost. January 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Keeps the dust down Bought this to use with my drywall sander and the combination makes for dust free sanding. Definitely recommend for using with a drywall sander or anything else where you don't want dust January 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Works as advertised--although I think the HEPA in the propaganda is misleading. In the sunlight you can seed the particles that are escaping December 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Great product!!!!!!! Would buy again!!!!!!! A+++++ December 8, 2015
