I'm not normally fond of hammers/sledges with fiberglass handles epoxied into the head (I much prefer hickory/wood handles), but this one was well done. I've had mine for going on 5 years now (at the time of this writing), and I've used it throughout each year with wedges to split large logs (3+ feet in diameter) for firewood. There's nothing like the power of a 16-pounder to drive wedges. (It goes without saying that you need proper sledge-swinging technique with this heavy of a sledge, so as not to hurt yourself.) This Rockforge 16-pounder's head and faces show no dings, mushrooming, or other injuries or defects from hitting steel wedges -- the steel in this Rockforge 16-pounder's head is quite good. The handle has never loosened, and is still in great condition. The rubber overstrike protection, however, ultimately will fail, so I've wrapped it tightly with poly rope using a spiral hitch. (Links/URLs are not allowed in product reviews, but a quick Internet search on "spiral hitch" will give you how-to videos on doing a spiral hitch. The spiral hitch is is preferred because each wrap interlocks with the previous wrap. The nice thing about a spiral hitch wrapped overstrike protection, is that it gives a nice grip area for your hand when you're raising the head overhead for a swing, and the wraps don't "shove apart" on impact like other wrap methods if you accidentally overstrike.) 5 years ago, this was a spur-of-the-moment purchase because I needed a heavy sledge one day for a large firewood splitting job, and I had no choice -- this was the only heavy (i.e. more than 10 pounds) sledge hammer product that Home Depot had at the time. But, all in all, I'd have to say this is one of the best heavy sledge hammers I've ever owned and used. I'm thoroughly impressed. Highly recommended!

Nice hammer. Hard to go wrong for $10. I guess they are discontinued so I'm not sure why Home Depot is requesting this review as I'm sure they aren't longer available. It splits wood with little effort at the overstrike protection is great.
