You could however I wouldn't over load it with salt and I would make sure I was able to rinse it if possible after using it just like you should when using fertilizer.

Answer:
80 lbs is a bit much of a load. Remember, it's made of plastic and some metal, so 80 lbs might cause early failures. Remember, salt is highly corrosive to metals. The unit MUST be THOROUGHLY washed after every salt application or you will find rust, especially around the broadcast blade in the bin, the handle, and the axle areas.. I would say it would hold most, if not all, of an 80-lb bag.

Hey handyRY.
I use this spreader at my home depot store to salt the sidewalk and it worked great. It works best with dry salt. It will hold 80 lbs of salt.

Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 547.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well but ... I have owned this spreader for several years. It has worked well and held up well with the exception of the foam handle covering, which wasn't tough enough to last past year 2. The main complaint I have is with the shape of the hopper. The bottom of the hopper is relatively flat from side to side and not steep enough to feed the last couple of pounds of product into the chute. You have to rock the spreader back and forth as you walk to get the last of the fertilizer or whatever to drop into the chute area. Overall I'm satisfied with how it works.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Issue of durability versus cost At this point I have owned two (2) of this model and two (2) of a lesser cost Scotts model over the last five to six years and they have all failed due to the same problem with the plastic drive or connecting rod leading from the gearbox to the spin plate and agitator. Generally have gotten at least one summer out of a given spreader and occasionally two but never three seasons. Other than the weakness of the plastic drive assembly as described the spreader seems reasonably well made. I do not think I am overly hard on lawn equipment and the question that presents itself is how much more can a more durable metal gear, shaft, and agitator assembly really cost especially when compared to the cost and mechanics of a typical inexpensive or moderately priced push mower or perhaps a bicycle? Even when a warranty applies, one issue is the value of time to exchange it, etc.. I do not think I will be purchasing another Scotts spreader considering experience with value or cost and durability........

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Uneven spread and poor wheel design! I purchased this spreader for the edge guard feature and capacity. During the first row of the application I noticed that the left side spread more fertilizer than the right. I thought the edge guard was stuck so I looked underneath and saw the design of the mechanism allowed this to happen. This allowed for an uneven application. Then when I put the spreader away when I was done I noticed a lot of fertilizer accumulated inside the wheels. Very disappointed with this design and with Scotts for allowing this to happen.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY!!! I'm not usually one to write a review because when I buy something it's usually pretty good quality. I used this Scotts Turf Builder DLX Spreader for approximately 10 minutes and the piece of PLASTIC that spins the turntable snapped right off. I was out in open grass going along just as pretty as you please and it snaps right off, didn't even get 10 lbs. of fertilizer spread. So I had to spread the rest by hand 20 lbs. to be exact. Will never buy another Scotts spreader!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great spreader The only assembly required is to swing the handle up and tighten the two knobs. The edge guard works quite well and can be engaged or disengaged while spreading without stopping. The normal spreader mode distributes the fertilizer very evenly on the lawn which is much better then my 20+ year old Speedygreen ever did. I am quite happy with the spreader and would recommend to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product This broadcast spreader is the best! The easy on-and-off edge guard really makes it easier. The large capacity fits a whole bag of fertilizer, which cuts down on my having to return to the garage to add more. And the easy-read dial to measure the flow is much better than on my previous spreaders. Overall, I am very happy I made the purchase!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big disappointment The edge guard was the second Scotts spreader I have purchased. The edge guard feature never did work very well. I always had to reach down & manually move it in and out of position. after only two seasons of light use, the pinion gear melted the housing just like in my first spreader. Very poor design.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product broke the second time I used it I bought this product because of the name, and paid quite a bit more for it than the cheaper brands. I spread two bags of fertilizer, and the second time I tried to use it, the spreader mechanism broke lose from the hopper when it was only half full. It is not worth the price.
