Questions & Answers

Is this just a blanket or does it have the grass seed on it?

It is just a blanket.

Do you leave this ground cover down or do you have to pull it up when the grass starts?

Asked by: rinker
If your grass is growing well, you can leave it and mow over the mat. If the grass grows very slowly, it is probably being burned and the mat will need to be raked up.

Does the blanket require water daily

Asked by: Gardener
The blanket is just a blanket. If whatever you are covering needs water, then it might need to be watered daily.

What is the best time of year to put this down?

Asked by: SSS
Depends on where you live. What USDA zone/nearby major city are you in? When does the first frost of the season usually happen? And what kind of grass are you seeding (I'm familiar with northern: KBG, PR, TTTF)

It is very easy to install and is a great alternative to straw if you dont have a huge area that needs covered. Works great on banks too! You will need to purchase some stakes to keep it from moving. I put down topsoil, seed, and the germination blanket and had grass growing in just a little over a week. The only reason I would not use it on a big area is due to the cost of it vs the cost of straw.

Can be tricky getting the blanket unrolled, but once you figure that out the blanket goes down nicely. All the 9 roll I bought had two indicators to help with unrolling. 1) A strip of paper at the outside that helps find the outer end of the roll, otherwise it all just looks like matted rolled up straw fibers. That also helps you position the roll so you can just unroll it once you pull the start end away from the roll. 2) A purple painted stripe across the other end. You will encounter this abut 35' into the roll and the paint will be on the bottom side of the roll as you are putting it down. The paint is the actual end of the blanket. When you get to the paint, stop unrolling and pull the painted end away from the roll and just keep pulling it to continue unrolling the rest of the blanket. I needed to pull up a section of mine to re-position it after it was in place about 3 hours. I had not yet watered the area but the soil was moist at the surface where it was covered by the blanket (Outside the blanket coverage area the same soil appeared dry on the surface). I know this soil was moist further down from some previous digging. Its nice to know that the blanket will help hold moisture around the seeds at the surface even in the sun.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job It's straw, held together with thin plastic netting. It was mostly easy to unroll, though I had some trouble with one edge tangling and sticking together as I got toward the end of the roll. It cuts with scissors but I'd recommend using a utility knife as it dulled the scissor blades pretty badly. Used two rolls with a 3 lb. bag of shade seed mix and landscaping staples, no fertilizer, to cover approximately 500 square feet of dirt and sparse weeds. The grass seed stayed in place through daily watering and germinated, almost ready to be mowed two weeks later. I don't know how everything will hold up or what will happen when I mow over it per the directions. I like the natural look of the product (from a distance it looks like a winter-dormant lawn) and the fact that it is biodegradable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blanket that keeps seed in place until it is time for it to wake up. After investing in your Pennington smart seed with mulch and fertilizer, the last thing that you want to have to do is fight the birds for it or have the wind or the rain redistribute it or make it disappear. This blanket rolls down over the seeded area and it is staked in place. The grass begins to grow right through the light layer of excelsior-like material which comprises the blanket. Instructions say to keep the blanket in place where it will eventually decompose and further enrich the baby grass plants. They also say to simply mow right over the whole thing when the new grass is tall enough. Skeptical at first, we have followed the directions with good results. We may be ready to mow in a week if the unusually rare rains in N. Texas ever stop long enough to allow it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money, Not good for warm climates I bought a couple of rolls to help start a new construction lawn. I spread the seed and rolled these on top. The quality of materials is very poor, the straw is not exactly what I would call straw. The main problem I had with the seed mat was that it was burning and killing my grass seedlings. The grass seed grew 10X better where it wasn't covered. I heavily watered twice a day and everyday the straw would be dry and brittle. I decided to rake up and toss the seed mat and re-seeded directly on top of the dirt.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Product I bought this because we were seeding a slope in our backyard. It was really hard to unroll it. The product gets caught on itself. I ended up having to cut off one corner because it wouldn't unroll. Also, this product is extremely thin, and we only got about 35 feet out of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mr This product installs easy and provide excellent cover for quick seed germination. Quickly covers exposed soil and prevents erosion and run off during rains.
