Customer Questions & Answers

Do you leave this ground cover down or do you have to pull it up when the grass starts?

Asked by: rinker
If your grass is growing well, you can leave it and mow over the mat. If the grass grows very slowly, it is probably being burned and the mat will need to be raked up.

Is this just a blanket or does it have the grass seed on it?

No grass seed, just very thin straw

What is the best time of year to put this down?

Asked by: SSS
Depends on where you live. What USDA zone/nearby major city are you in? When does the first frost of the season usually happen? And what kind of grass are you seeding (I'm familiar with northern: KBG, PR, TTTF)

What size is this?

Asked by: freezershoppin
4' X 50' if you need more specifics It says 200 square foot with 48" depth. This means (48"/12)=4' - (each 12" is one foot). 200 sqft /4=50' long I think it is also important to know this as opposed to just square footage for easier calculation. Not everyone would be assumed to know how to calculate. Good Luck!

Seed Germination Blanket is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money, Not good for warm climates I bought a couple of rolls to help start a new construction lawn. I spread the seed and rolled these on top. The quality of materials is very poor, the straw is not exactly what I would call straw. The main problem I had with the seed mat was that it was burning and killing my grass seedlings. The grass seed grew 10X better where it wasn't covered. I heavily watered twice a day and everyday the straw would be dry and brittle. I decided to rake up and toss the seed mat and re-seeded directly on top of the dirt.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job It's straw, held together with thin plastic netting. It was mostly easy to unroll, though I had some trouble with one edge tangling and sticking together as I got toward the end of the roll. It cuts with scissors but I'd recommend using a utility knife as it dulled the scissor blades pretty badly. Used two rolls with a 3 lb. bag of shade seed mix and landscaping staples, no fertilizer, to cover approximately 500 square feet of dirt and sparse weeds. The grass seed stayed in place through daily watering and germinated, almost ready to be mowed two weeks later. I don't know how everything will hold up or what will happen when I mow over it per the directions. I like the natural look of the product (from a distance it looks like a winter-dormant lawn) and the fact that it is biodegradable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blanket that keeps seed in place until it is time for it to wake up. After investing in your Pennington smart seed with mulch and fertilizer, the last thing that you want to have to do is fight the birds for it or have the wind or the rain redistribute it or make it disappear. This blanket rolls down over the seeded area and it is staked in place. The grass begins to grow right through the light layer of excelsior-like material which comprises the blanket. Instructions say to keep the blanket in place where it will eventually decompose and further enrich the baby grass plants. They also say to simply mow right over the whole thing when the new grass is tall enough. Skeptical at first, we have followed the directions with good results. We may be ready to mow in a week if the unusually rare rains in N. Texas ever stop long enough to allow it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Product I bought this because we were seeding a slope in our backyard. It was really hard to unroll it. The product gets caught on itself. I ended up having to cut off one corner because it wouldn't unroll. Also, this product is extremely thin, and we only got about 35 feet out of it.
