Customer Questions & Answers

Can I build a planter with this item?

The planter would be 2.5 ft high and 8 ft. long and 15 inches wide.
Asked by: sonny
I would not as the tongue and groove panels are too thin to meet my long term durability standard.

A have a few questions. 1. Can these panel be turned side ways, stacked and installed horizontally to resemble shiplap so that you would technically have a 5'0 H x 3'0' wide panel? Also, can these be painted immediately after installation and can you use paint instead of stain?
Asked by: DeborahV
Hi Deborah I would say there shouldn't be any reason they can't be installed sideways with multiple, but I would recommend you use a 2x4 framework around the 5' high x 3' wide structure. Of course this means it would now be a bit higher and a bit wider, but you would need some kind of framework for structure. I would also put a 2x4 between the 2 of them, so you are kind of making a figure 8 out of the 2x4. I am not a paint professional but I never advise painting over staining this kind of wood. You can, but I personally don't recommend it. Hope that helps.

How long after installing Western Red Cedar fencing should we wait before applying stain protection?

Also what type of product do you recommend for a clear or semi-clear stain?
Asked by: BettyJo
I am not a professional BUT dealing with Western Red Cedar narrow width materials for many years I wouldn't hold off to let it climate adjust as some try to recommend. The Stain will help stabilize the moisture content so the swings between the sun and the rain are less impactful. The more tint or solids a stain has generally the more UV protection it affords, and UV is one of the biggest enemies. I personally feel a Cedar Tone semi transparent stain is the best way to go.

Can these panels be cut in half length wise to use as bench backs?

Made some cinder block benches with wood seats so I was thinking if I cut these length wise added a new bottom edge support then screwed them to the back of the wood seats it might work. If so would they need posts on either side sunk in the ground for extra support my husband is a big guy and good support is a must..
Asked by: Outoftheboxer
Hello and Thanks so much for your interest. Cosmetically it sounds like an attractive idea. Do you need posts? Well that would depend on how sturdy they are mounted to the bench I think. However, will they be a good back rest? I would be a bit concerned there to lean against the fence board area and really the frame is just a frame, not a structural aspect. It really isn't designed to take a load that way. However, if you mounted these in a sturdy way and then spanned across the face of these and those mounts (posts) with a backrest like a 2x6 or similar then I think it would work nicely because the backrest would be taking the load and these would just be cosmetic. Just a thought. Thanks so much for your interest.

Customer Reviews

3 ft. x 2.5 ft. Western Red Cedar Solid Tongue and Groove Fence Panel is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, but frame needs reinforcement Actual dimensions are 38.5" x 30" (36" x 27" inside the frame). On one side of each panel the inside of the frame is rounded – 1/4" round. Quality in great, just know that you can make the panel askew by a few inches by holding one side of the frame. The corners are held together with 1 screw each. Made a fence with one of the panels as a swing gate. I'll need to add corner brackets to the gate panel to keep it square.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great panels to hide AC Bought four panels. Only needed three. Stained them and screwed them together around our backyard AC. Worked out great and looks fantastic! Very happy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it Had to add several reinforcing screws to the decorative top and the sides per reviews elsewhere, but aside from a few minutes spent doing that these look great. Get lots of compliments. Way easy to install.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised I bought a short fence panel to use as a gate. It looks good enough to go anywhere. All I did was add a diagonal brace and hinges.
