Q:I want to put a 4x4 post in a plastic whiskey barrel with a bird house on top. How long is the pipe that would be in concrete? Would the post be stable?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi NYinTexas, thank you for your message. The minimum embedment depth is 9.5" and it would not be recommended for a free-standing application. More than likely, you would experience movement at the top of the post. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello, This is Ricardo with Simpson Strong-Tie. Per our specs, the EPB requires 4" side concrete coverage on all for sides of the 4x4 wood post. You will want to consider this when designing your concrete footing. Our Customer Service team is available to talk with you directly and take you through a step-by-step solution. Please call us at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

Q:Can these ties be used to build a horse stable pole barn? Just a 12x50ft long ones. Was planning on using them but then contractors buddies said to put poles in the ground. Planning on metal roof. Thanks

          Answer This Question

A:  Hi Silke, This is Ricardo with Simpson Strong-Tie. Post installed base connections are not recommended for free-standing structures or fences larger than 4ft without any additional lateral support. You might want to consider either the CBSQ or MPBZ which will provide more support at the base. Customer Service team is available to talk with you directly and take you through a step-by-step solution. Please call us at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

All snapped in under 24 hours due to moderate wind
Trash. Embedded into concrete up to the top section for a wooden fence. Every single base that didn't have additional strengthening either snapped the top section from the embedded posts or the top section snapped into multiple pieces. Woke up to the fence portion completed laying on its side the day after putting it up. Absolute garbage product.

            Response from Simpson Strong-TieNov 9, 2022
Hey TBoni, this is Ricardo. We are sorry to hear that you had this experience with our product. The EPB Elevated Post Base is not a suggested product to use in applications where there is no bracing or support at the top. Please see this note from page 72 of our Wood Construction Connectors Catalog. "Post bases do not provide adequate resistance to prevent members from rotating about the base and therefore are not recommended for non-top-supported installations (such as fences or unbraced carports)." We do offer some products that are designed to resist this rotation when bracing is not present. Please contact us at 800-999-5099 to discuss further. SimpsonStrongTie

Used the post bases to begin our project for the trellis/backyard grill & bar area. All the products you see in this picture; we purchased from Home Depot.
