Questions & Answers

Did I ruin the fill valve by moving the lock ring?

If I pushed up the lock ring and pulled the threaded shank completely out of the valve body but then reinstalled it and re-seated the lock ring, can I expect it to be OK or did I damage anything?
Asked by: Karen
Should be fine, because: I wasn't able to adjust the height by turning (un/screwing) the two parts as instructed, so I took it back to HD. The clerk did exactly as you did; just yanked the two tubes apart. We reassembled it, adjusted to correct height, installed it, and after 3 yrs, no problems.

Why does my toilet run for 3-5 seconds every 5 minutes or so even when I don't flush

Asked by: steve
What your toilet is doing is what we call ghost flushing. It is almost always caused by the flapper. If you possibly can use the original flapper. Using a fit all flapper can cause the problem. Sometimes I run a new flapper under hot water to help it to seat. And sometimes they may need to seat in for a day or two. Make sure the seat is clean there can be parts of the old flapper stuck to it' Other things that can cause this are the tube from the fill valve to the flush valve is stuck down to far in the flush valve below the water line. Also I have seen the flush valve tube have a crack. Usually I cracked it adjusting the fill valve or taking off a really hard flapper. If you think this is dumb you haven't changed a thousand flappers and I have changed a lot more than that.

Need to hold my tiolet handle for it to flush, What can I buy to fix this problem

Asked by: Kimmy
New flapper valve. If you watch a working toilet flush, the flapper floats up for a few seconds, and then flops down to seal the drain hole. That or your tank isn't filling enough before you flush to keep the flapper up long enough, or your handle isn't raising the flapper up high enough. If the latter, shorten the chain.

What causes my fluidmaster to fill the tank so slowly, as long as 5 minutes to fill? I have slow fill on 2 toilets.

Asked by: Lido
could be water line pressure, or valve is not open all the way, or valve is partly blocked

I awoken the other morning and upon flushing the handle of myhe Kohler Cimeron toilet upgrade, purchased at Home Depoit a few years ago, The toilerdid nothing, no flush no water. The fluidmaster 400 series flushmaster was branded with the Kohler name tagged on it. My guess is the rubber bladder was bad. I decided to replace the entire unit at Home depoit for a few dollars more. It took me about a half hour to change it out. Happily i was back in business. I did notice a lot of other brands on the shelf. I decided to stick with the brand I am familar with. As always I recommend the fluid master brand.

Good product but take your time installing it , just because you have done it 100 times before this product is very susceptible to cross threading.. The plastic where the supply line attaches will cross thread easy. I had trouble with one and once the threads are screwed-up you might as well toss it. THE SUPPLY LINE MUST BE SCREWED ON ALL THE WAY UP TO SEAL ON THE RUBBER WASHER IN THE SUPPLY LINE SO AS NOT TO LEAK. take your time.

I recently noticed a hissing noise coming from the fill tank and after some Googling, I also noticed that water was slowly spilling into the drain tube, which led me to concluding I need to replace the fill valve. Quickly found this model online and checked my local HD to see if they have them in stock. Went in yesterday to pick one up and when I asked them where replacement fill valves for toilets are, they said aisle 42. Aisle 42 was full of plumbing components with a single cardboard display holding a similar item for ~$12. This item as well as many others were found 2-3 aisles away. Seems like a shady practice to me, hence 1 ding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Commode fill tube assembly System works as advertised, upgrading or replacing these parts should not be held off until a problem presents itself, e.g. Water leaks, slow flushing, etc. Braided line with limited torque fittings should be used when replacing any flexible water lines that have a constant water pressure feeding them, whether in the bathroom, washing machine, etc. Don't buy the standard non-reinforced rubber lines and save two bucks, the braided line covers limit the eventual expansion of the line inside, decreasing the chance for rupture and costly flooding damage which occurs rapidly running the typical 40-60lbs of residential system water pressure.

It is adjustable from 9-14" in height making it useable where other fixed height models would not fit. Its design allows it to be installed when space within the tank is limited. The adjustable screw arm on the floatation device allows it to be adjusted to whatever water level in the tank makes the commode work efficiently. It took more time to remove the old unit than it did to install this unit. The standard threading on the end of the shaft makes connecting a standard flexible water source easy. This installation is independent of the flapper valve system that flushes the commode.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Actually very disappointed with this on two points: 1. ... Actually very disappointed with this on two points: 1. The adjustment is not sufficient to allow enough water for a solid flush for slightly older toilets (early 1990'). Solids can take several flushes to clear the bowl. While it is universal, it is not for older, less efficient toilets. 2. The valve is VERY loud. I put it in a 1st floor powder room; however if it were next to the bedrooms I would have already replaced it. Positive note was that installation was easy but I will likely be replacing this whole fixture with one from somewhere else.

One of them performed as expected with no issues. However, the second valve I installed had this curious issue where the float would rise shutting of the valve but over the course of about 20 - 30 seconds, the float would "drift" downward and sink within the water. This would then cause the water value to reopen and run continuously. It almost seems as though there may have been a manufacturing issue with this assembly regarding the float's buoyancy. Contacted the "live chat" to explain my issue. Got the canned response of "ghost flushing". Irritating but since it is only a $10 part, I am just going to let it go and buy a replacement from a different manufacturer (or perhaps attach a cork to the float assembly to give it more buoyancy. (Yes, I adjusted the water tank height and the height of the "stem". It is at the same level as the float valve that works perfectly fine and on the same model of toilet.)

The fluid master valves are extremely easy to install and was supposed to be a direct replacement for the fluid master valve that came with the toilet. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the original valve which had the same part number, but a different suffix, had the hole plugged where you would usually find the black tube that feeds the bowl and this one does not. It does not seem to affect the operation, just letting it run into the tank, but it isn't the way the toilet was original set up.
