Customer Questions & Answers

Did I ruin the fill valve by moving the lock ring?

If I pushed up the lock ring and pulled the threaded shank completely out of the valve body but then reinstalled it and re-seated the lock ring, can I expect it to be OK or did I damage anything?
Asked by: Anonymous
Should be fine, because: I wasn't able to adjust the height by turning (un/screwing) the two parts as instructed, so I took it back to HD. The clerk did exactly as you did; just yanked the two tubes apart. We reassembled it, adjusted to correct height, installed it, and after 3 yrs, no problems.

Why does my toilet run for 3-5 seconds every 5 minutes or so even when I don't flush

Asked by: steve
What your toilet is doing is what we call ghost flushing. It is almost always caused by the flapper. If you possibly can use the original flapper. Using a fit all flapper can cause the problem. Sometimes I run a new flapper under hot water to help it to seat. And sometimes they may need to seat in for a day or two. Make sure the seat is clean there can be parts of the old flapper stuck to it' Other things that can cause this are the tube from the fill valve to the flush valve is stuck down to far in the flush valve below the water line. Also I have seen the flush valve tube have a crack. Usually I cracked it adjusting the fill valve or taking off a really hard flapper. If you think this is dumb you haven't changed a thousand flappers and I have changed a lot more than that.

Need to hold my tiolet handle for it to flush, What can I buy to fix this problem

Asked by: Kimmy
New flapper valve. If you watch a working toilet flush, the flapper floats up for a few seconds, and then flops down to seal the drain hole. That or your tank isn't filling enough before you flush to keep the flapper up long enough, or your handle isn't raising the flapper up high enough. If the latter, shorten the chain.

What causes my fluidmaster to fill the tank so slowly, as long as 5 minutes to fill? I have slow fill on 2 toilets.

Asked by: Lido
could be water line pressure, or valve is not open all the way, or valve is partly blocked

Universal Toilet Fill Valve is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 924.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Agree with DW's 8/16/16 review! This time around, I bought 3 valves for 3 toilets 1 week ago. One valve has already started to hiss (valve not completely closing) even after selecting the lowest fill level. After about an hour, it has reached the top of the toilet's fill tube and is wasting water just like I am going to have to do on gas and time getting and installing a replacement! And yes Fluidmaster, I installed it correctly as shown in my photo. It wouldn't have worked for a week without issue if I hadn't.

This is the second time I have installed a Fluidmaster valve only to have the valve fail. On this second one, the valve would never shut off and the tank overflowed. Slowly so you could not tell at first. On the other, about 30 days ago the float would not move correctly causing the toilet to not fill. These are manufacturing flaws with brand new valves. I'm using other brands now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Universal toilet fill valve 1st replacement value made high pitch sound. Sounded like leaking water from top of valve.. Turned off water to toilet again. Re dried tank and dissemble valve to return product back to Home Depot. Cashier said they get this returned all the time. Knowing this I still replaced it with the same product. I installed new valve and this time no noise and it works perfectly.

One of them performed as expected with no issues. However, the second valve I installed had this curious issue where the float would rise shutting of the valve but over the course of about 20 - 30 seconds, the float would "drift" downward and sink within the water. This would then cause the water value to reopen and run continuously. It almost seems as though there may have been a manufacturing issue with this assembly regarding the float's buoyancy. Contacted the "live chat" to explain my issue. Got the canned response of "ghost flushing". Irritating but since it is only a $10 part, I am just going to let it go and buy a replacement from a different manufacturer (or perhaps attach a cork to the float assembly to give it more buoyancy. (Yes, I adjusted the water tank height and the height of the "stem". It is at the same level as the float valve that works perfectly fine and on the same model of toilet.)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Should have called the plumber My toilet was not filling up properly after flushing so I installed this in my toilet. It seemed to work better but there was a leak that I could not stop. I reinstalled it more than once and finally had to call a plumber.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always good to have an extra ready. Many times the fluid master will be leaking or have to be replaced. First purchase a new seal also available at the Home Depot which is located under the cap. Check it first if it is ok change complete unit.
