Customer Questions & Answers

Did I ruin the fill valve by moving the lock ring?

If I pushed up the lock ring and pulled the threaded shank completely out of the valve body but then reinstalled it and re-seated the lock ring, can I expect it to be OK or did I damage anything?
Asked by: Anonymous
Should be fine, because: I wasn't able to adjust the height by turning (un/screwing) the two parts as instructed, so I took it back to HD. The clerk did exactly as you did; just yanked the two tubes apart. We reassembled it, adjusted to correct height, installed it, and after 3 yrs, no problems.

Why does my toilet run for 3-5 seconds every 5 minutes or so even when I don't flush

Asked by: steve
What your toilet is doing is what we call ghost flushing. It is almost always caused by the flapper. If you possibly can use the original flapper. Using a fit all flapper can cause the problem. Sometimes I run a new flapper under hot water to help it to seat. And sometimes they may need to seat in for a day or two. Make sure the seat is clean there can be parts of the old flapper stuck to it' Other things that can cause this are the tube from the fill valve to the flush valve is stuck down to far in the flush valve below the water line. Also I have seen the flush valve tube have a crack. Usually I cracked it adjusting the fill valve or taking off a really hard flapper. If you think this is dumb you haven't changed a thousand flappers and I have changed a lot more than that.

Need to hold my tiolet handle for it to flush, What can I buy to fix this problem

Asked by: Kimmy
New flapper valve. If you watch a working toilet flush, the flapper floats up for a few seconds, and then flops down to seal the drain hole. That or your tank isn't filling enough before you flush to keep the flapper up long enough, or your handle isn't raising the flapper up high enough. If the latter, shorten the chain.

What causes my fluidmaster to fill the tank so slowly, as long as 5 minutes to fill? I have slow fill on 2 toilets.

Asked by: Lido
could be water line pressure, or valve is not open all the way, or valve is partly blocked

This valve was simple to install with easy-to-follow instructions (took me about 15 min). Best of all, it works like a charm.

I googled and learned that the hissing sound most likely comes from the fill valve. At 6pm I drove out to HD, picked up a new fill valve and waited for my kids to fall asleep. I kid you not (no pun intended) it took 10 minutes to install and the hissing sound is gone.

If you're looking for an affordable toilet fill value replacement that's easy to install and works as described, then you've found it! This item is below $8 (including CA tax), has the best instructions and pictorial demonstrations that I've seen in a long time and straight forward. It actually took me longer to drive to the store, pick it up (I purchased it online with pick up in store option) then it did to install it. I was so upset when I had mistakenly broken a part of my old toilet system, but this product made up for it quickly. It works much better than what I replaced and isn't as noisy. Yes ANYONE can install this item and save themselves a lot of money.

I bought one about a month ago - it worked great for all of 3 weeks. Now, the float gets hung up when I flush the toilet, so the float does not go down and the toilet does not fill back up. To flush, I have to remove the lid and tap the float arm and it goes down. Piece of junk for sure. Now I have to go back to the store, purchase a different brand and start all over - turning off the water (its an old house so the valve is tight to turn), emptying the tank, etc. Just a pain you don't want to have to do twice in a month's time. I suggest buying a different brand - definitely won't ever use Fluidmaster brand again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective valve There are not too many choices when it comes to toilet fill valves, and FluidMaster is certainly a commonly-stocked product. They definitely have the design down to a science, and I've used quite a few of this model over the years. The trouble is that when you have a problem with a toilet and drive to the store to buy a valve, install it, and find that it's defective, it's terribly inconvenient to have to go back and get a replacement. This is an example of poor quality control. You're better off buying two and returning one after you finish your repair.

Our old one was leaking so I figured it'd be a quick, easy fix, and it was at first. Then after about two weeks the toilet tank stopped filling up with water. You would flush the toilet and the float would go down but the refill mechanism never kicked on. You have to tap on the top of the float to get the toilet to fill back up. And let me tell you, it gets pretty old having to take the tank top off after every time you use the toilet. I will probably never buy this brand again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

Assuming you have done your research (recognizing the source/cause of running toilet/leaking water) and you know a bad fill valve is the issue, this product works fine. The instructions are pretty good, explain all the steps and tools you will need. The diagrams are good enough to go by for an amateur like me, although not all details are labeled - you need to use intuition to decipher a couple things. The only slightly tricky part was at the end - you need to ratchet the thick cylinder up or down the shaft (easy to do) to get top level with water infill spout - directions show how to do it but takes some judgement of what 'level' is. But overall, installation went well, just takes time (about 45 min- hour) and associated patience and it's done.
