Answer:
Wood conditioner is recommended for sealing soft woods prior to staining to ensure even coverage of wood stains or clear finishes. Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Stain features nano pigments, which intensify color clarity and highlight wood grain, delivering the perfect shade in just one coat. Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired color. To test, apply the stain in an inconspicuous area.

Answer:
It depends if the stain was sealed with poly or tong oil or anything that has a gloss that will prevent the stain from absorbing. There is poly/stain combinations that will go directly over wood that has a sealant on it. If you don't want to use that product, I would suggest a light sanding.

Answer:
I'd test it first, but it will cover scratches. However you'll want to put a sealant over the area that was stained.

Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Stain will cover wood filler that is designed for staining, such as Varathane Wood Filler. For best results, we recommend using Varathane Wood Filler. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-3-5-oz-Dark-Walnut-Wood-Filler-Case-of-4-215214/205092628

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by The color is awesome, but the pick up is hideous. . I stripped an old door that I found at a salvage store to fit into my 100 year old house. It was an 15 panel glass door and it took me forever. I stained one side of the door and the color was absolutely perfect. It matched the rest of the wood in the house. After 24 hours I put the brush of poly or sealant, which was also oil based on the door and it picked up the color. So how long do I have to wait to seal the door with poly or tong oil? I had to "restain" the area in which I had tried to put the poly on since now the color was uneven. I'm not how it's going to look now, but I'm exceedingly irritated. This stuff created more work for me and if I have to repair the color.. I've one woodworking for years and I worked 2 years in the paint department of Home Depot while I was in college. I'm an experienced painter and wood worker. I read the directions and I read the reviews. I'm astonished that no one else has had this happen. I never anticipated this because I've never had this happen with other brands of stain. September 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stain This type of stain is the best one out. It saves me time with me only applying 1 coat. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I thought it would be a dissaster It goes on like paint so I thought we were in trouble. I stained a lot of things before so I wasn't familiar with this type of stain. I love the results. It covers every crack of the wood!! I spilled some on my shoe and got it right off. I didn't stain my shoe. September 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by excellent stain Excellent stain! easy application, stain covers smoothly, penetrates in just a few minutes, take off excess and drys in an hour ready for a second coat, which is not always needed but it enhances the finish more deeply! excellent product! May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stain Product - Probably 15th Pint Purchased Overall a great product. It lasts and fades minimally over the years. I stained my fence two years ago and only touch it up yearly. Some lower mossy areas are more problematic, but expected as this was not the intent of the stain. I just stained my daughters playground set and it looks great and more high-end with the dark walknut color. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great stains, why aren't they on the homedepot store shelves? Easy to use, quick even coverage. dries quickly. Able to apply final finishes within 2 hours. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great I used t his on oak and oak veneer ply. Both came out even and look amazing. I applied with a lint free rag. I applied generously and worked it all in. Finished with sam. Brand 3x poly. Awesome! April 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My favorite stain! I love this stain! Love that it dries in an hour and is not tacky. The color is beautiful! Sad my Home Depot does not carry it- but I love that I can order it online. January 5, 2016
