Not sure, but MOST polyurethane finishes seal SO well when cured that they won't allow other paints to get a "bite" on them for more adhesion. I'm not saying a topcoat won't dry and adhere somewhat, but it could be subject to flaking off if disturbed much.

I suppose you could use a conventional sealer (clear) which is made to be painted over, and decide if you like the clear look. If so, THEN use poly for a permanent finish. Read Less

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product was so easy to use! This is the best indoor wood seal/finish we have ever used. The odor was barely noticeable, cleanup was easy with water, and it produced an excellent finish! We used two coats and sanded lightly with 400 grit sandpaper after the first coat. It only took about 15 minutes to dry, so the process went quickly. The Home Depot employee suggested using an old t-shirt to apply so there would be no brush lines, and she was right! Our handmade reclaimed redwood tv stand looks great! We will definitely buy more of this product for our next reclaimed wood project - bookcases! April 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Easy To Use This goes on fast, looks good, has very low odor, and cleanup is easy. I can't address durability as of yet but I'm happy with product. I used two coats over a water based sanding primer on unfinished oak cabinets. All done in 5 - 6 hours! December 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product Was a little hesitant on a water based product . It went on easy, dried very fast and looks great. I haven't had it long enough to see the durability but with everything else that's good NO WORRIES!! November 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Product Nice clear. Goes on smoothly with brush or HVLP spray. Fast Dry Time. EZ Clean-up Seems to provide a durable finish. October 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Crystal Clear Coat I used the product over a painted floor. It dries absolutely clear with no yellow tint, which is exactly what I was looking for. The semi gloss designation is a bit wrong I think, though. came out a bit too glossy for what I wanted, so I put down a couple of coats of the satin version of the product over the semi gloss and it came out to what I was looking for. July 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product Much easier to use than anticipated. Best of all, finished product looked outstanding. September 2, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by It's an okay product, but don't hate it I sanded my kitchen table and then white washed it. I applied the clear semi gloss polyurethane now to be fair maybe I put too much on, but it did turn my white table a yellowish color and I was told that it wouldn't. Would I use it again? Yes, just not on a white washed surface. March 4, 2014
