Customer Questions & Answers

Does the Gold have the vents on the bottom, with the plate to catch the ashes?

Asked by: Nanook
The vents are on opposing sides where the locking handle attaches to the body. It is superior to the bottom vent in that you have more control over the flow through ventilation. No vent holes to get clogged up. The downside is that you lose the bottom ash catcher - you must dump the ashes by turning over the grill when cool.

Side Table

I notice the Smokey Joe Gold does not have the attached side table that comes with the Smokey Joe Titanium series. Will the Titanium's table fit the Gold, or does it interfere with the side air vent?
Asked by: Smokey
Do not believe you can attach the side table because of the design.

can you use wood with this grill?

Asked by: homeowner
Thank you for your question. You can use wood chips or wood chunks with charcoal briquettes in a Smokey Joe Silver. If you have any further questions, please contact Weber Customer Service at 1-800-446-1071.

Can this grill be placed ontop of grass?

Asked by: Shiney
Depending on the height of the grass, probably but I would place a board or maybe a garbage can lid under just to feel safe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This little Weber is built as tough as all the other Weber kettles, which means it will last a lifetime! I bought the Smokey Joe Gold to use as a portable picnic grill, knowing it would be as durable as the other 3 Weber grills I have. The best feature is the lid lock, allowing the grill to be carried. But the Gold version is never shown on the shelves at any retailer, only the Silver model, which doesn't have the lid lock. The Gold has to be ordered. Notice the Gold doesn't have the ash plate, there aren't bottom vents. Weber should combine the best features of the Silver and Gold, and have it for sale everywhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Save $8.00 and get the Silver One of the basic differences between this and the Silver is the locations of the lower vents. The Gold has them on the sides ABOVE the charcoal whereas the Silver has the vents on the bottom UNDER the charcoal (just like their big brother "full size" kettles). The vents positioned above the coals don't allow you to get a lot of air under the coals and therefore getting the grill hot e.g. for searing steaks can be a real challenge if not impossible. Yes the Gold gas the locking handle and the higher vents allow you to keep all the ash inside the grill. But those features in my opinion are not worth the problem they create for cooking. After all, this is a grill so before anything else it should cook well Get the Silver. It's cheaper and with the vents on the bottom of the grill you'll find high temp cooking much easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will last forever - Literally never rusts! We have owned our little Smokey Joe for over 15 years now and not one bit of rust and nothing has broken or rotted off. They put an excellent coating over the kettle part. It actually sat out in the weather uncovered for two years when my daughter was in college. Perfect for that college student or just grilling for a few. You will get your $$ worth with this grill. I've looked at the new models at Home Depot and the quality and sturdiness is still the same 15 years later.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value So very happy with this grill. Very easy to use, and with the durable construction, it offers a lot of value for the money. Perfect grilling for two and amazingly portable. Securing the cover after you're done immediatly extinguishes the charcoal and the grill is cold by the time you're done eating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to transport I purchased the Smokey Joe mostly for small grill outs at the park or beach. I like that the metal retaining bar secures the lid down, so I don't have to worry about the lid falling off during transport. I've noticed that there is an airflow problem with this particular model, as the inside does not get as hot as the Smokey Joe Silver. Overall, this is a great grill.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Built This is a well built product using quality materials. With proper care it should last for many years. The air inlets on the side are a joke. Can hardly get enough heat to cook. Seriously, it took 45 min to cook a 3/4 inch thick sirloin steak to medium-well. With lid on, the charcoal almost goes out. But -- this issue is easily resolved by drilling some 1/2" air holes about an inch below the charcoal grate. This location allows air to enter under the charcoal while preserving the solid bottom to catch ashes.
