Customer Questions & Answers

do they make covers anymore?

back in the day, they used to make covers for the whirlybird units. why did they stop?
Asked by: robertoiglesiasjr
Hello, Lomanco Customer Support here & I'm cringing at the thought of covering the Whirlybirds! We do not recommend covering your turbines!!! Properly functioning attic ventilation systems are required year around, especially in the winter! Most people associate attic ventilation with heat; however, of the two major destructive forces at work in your attic, moisture, not heat, is the most destructive. Since winter air is drier, it absorbs moisture from your home and you. The attic space is even more susceptible to excessive moisture in the winter. Plus when air is trapped inside the attic – it will always be warmer than the air outside. The roof sheathing/decking will be colder in winter months. Thus creating even more condensation. It can literally "rain" in your attic. This moisture produces mildew, rotting conditions damaging wood members and destroying shingles or it drips down to the ceiling below to damage plaster or paint. Insulation also becomes wet and provides less resistance to heat loss – in effect loses its R-value.

Might seem like a strange question but.....ARE THEY RAIN PROOF??

Asked by: jb
Hello, Lomanco Customer Support here. YES! When turbines are properly installed with a balanced system of intake and exhaust, they will not allow any weather infiltration. Here is why... The turbine has twenty-one (21) air-foil curved vanes with rolled edges to deflect water. The rolled edges are designed to force the water to run down the vanes & not into the attic. Air-foil means a body designed to provide a desired reaction force when in motion relative to the surrounding area. To summarize, the turbine should be turning at all times when there is outside air movement. The centrifugal force of the turbine also prevents leakage. Centrifugal force is the force that tends to impel a thing or parts of a thing, such as rain, outward from a center of rotation, such as the bearing/shaft assembly in the turbine. It is important that the unit be sealed with roofing cement around all seams, nails, and under the flashing. The part of the flashing that is facing the roof peak should be installed underneath the shingles and the bottom part should be overlapping the shingles. Sealing in this manner prevents water from entering the attic under the flashing.

Will they come apart leaving a hole in your roof for the water to come in?

Asked by: rick
Hello, Lomanco Customer Support here. Whirlybirds have undergone extensive testing to become Miami Dade County Approved as well as Texas Department of Insurance. The testing requires the Whirlybird to withstand winds of 110 MPH. These birds are tough and will not come apart.

Does this come with insect screen?

Does this come with insect screen?
Asked by: Anon
Hello Anon, Mary from Lomanco here. Lomanco Whirlybirds do not come equipped with an insect screen. We have been manufacturing turbines since 1968 and we have no history of any significant bug or insect issues that have resulted from Lomanco Whirlybirds. The turbine should be spinning at minimal wind speeds and the moving parts should deter any animal or insect from entering the attic. Also, the heat exiting the turbine should deter from entering the attic. If you have any additional questions / concerns, feel free to reach out to myself or anyone on Lomanco's customer service team - 800.643.5596. Thank you, Mary

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My garage was getting way too hot I installed 2 of these fans and the heat issue is resolved. We store camping items on a large rafter shelf I built. All of the items and christmas decorations were getting cooked. After installing the fans I have no issues what so ever. I can crawl around and pick items off the upper shelf without breaking a sweat. No solar electric motor maintenance, or the cost of one of those solar units.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product I think this is an excellent wind turbine for roof ventilation, in retrospect if you just barely need one 14" turbines, I believe having two of the 12" versions might be a better choice and more efficient at roof ventilation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from well built I just replaced these turbines and left the existing foundations in place. In order for them to sit low enough I had to lower the screw holes, not that hard. These are built much better than my old ones. Spin nice.
