Q:When is the best time to aerate and do you follow up with over seeding

A:  The fall, once the weather turns cooler so that there is less competition from weeds and your seeds have enough time to get established before winter.

A:  The pros say fall because you're less likely to stir up weed seeds. I've done both fall and spring with machine and hand aerators and had virtually no trouble. And it's a great time to overseed, keeping in mind that there is more to it than just spreading seed around your established lawn.

A:  You can aerate now or after it rains because the soil is softer and follow up with seeding end of summer early fall. I think it's too hot right now unless you have a good watering system.

            by|Jul 16, 2019

A:  I suggest the best time to aerate is in early spring once the ground has dried up a bit. This would invigorate your lawn prior to the heat of summer. This would also be a good time to overseed as well as fertilize and spread mulch if you can come by some. The aeration will allow the nutrients to reach deep into the lawn root zone.

              by|Jun 5, 2019

A:  After 1st cut early to mid spring. 1st detach and then aerate. Follow with over seeding.

A:  Probably because it's time consuming and they can become clogged and frustrating. I aerate my half acre yard with a machine once a year and use the hand aerator as a terrific supplement for small areas or frequently walked paths; or for areas that are closer to obstacles you'd want to avoid with a machine. I cut about an inch from each tine on my hand aerator (using a hacksaw with the same angle) and it never clogs. I use it once a week or so.

A:  Hello Sam, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question. There is only room in typical Home Depot stores for around 33,000 to 36,000 items. Online at homedepot.com there are over 1,000,000 items to choose from. I hope this helps, Chris. .

A:  I wondered the same thing, but they shipped it to my local store for free so it was almost as if it were in the store. I go there often enough that it didn't create an extra trip.

The core aerator I received has a manufacturing defect in one of the coring tubes. There is a spur of welding residue that prevents that tube from ejecting the soil core. It compacts the soil in the tube instead and it is very difficult to clear the compacted soil. It is a well made tool and I am hoping that I can get a replacement core aerator without the manufacturing defect. If not, I'll try filing down the clump of steel that is blocking the tube. Yard Butler would be well advised to inspect their products before they put them up for sale.

Did a great job! Does take a bit of time of course, but perfect for small yard (mine is ~400 sq ft and took about 1/3 of a day with breaks). Highly recommend doing after rain or watering the lawn. Much harder to use on dry ground.

                          Yard Butler worked very well.
I have a small backyard and I had no problem after figuring out how to clean the Yard Butler. Unlike others, I used on both wet and dry soil and had an easier time on dry, less sticking. Forgot to clean and dirt came out easy with screwdriver. Great find.

I am very pleased with it. It works well for my purposes. I mainly needed it this year to help some areas in which I suppressed/killed some Bermuda grass, and which suffered from the August heat. It will come in handy, even w/a professional aerator, in taking care of edges and problem areas. I keep it clean and sprayed w/silicone after use so that it won’t rust, and will continue to easily release the cores of dirt. I read some reviews w/ complaints about welds interfering w/the core releases, but I think some cheaper models were included, and mine was welded very well.

We have a small lawn so using aerator was perfect and I had no problems. You do have to soak your lawn or it will be difficult to aerate.
