Motor Oil Spill in Chevy Tahoe

This question is from 19 oz. Instant Spot and Stain Remover
Asked by
Queens, NY
March 24, 2016

About 2 weeks ago, while having my car detailed, the detailer "accidentally" spilled an ENTIRE bottle of motor oil all over my trunk's carpet and on my back row. Everyone that I spoke to said that I have to purchase another carpet...I don't know where to begin with that one... Does this product remove the oil as well as the toxic odor/fumes or do you offer a more efficient product?

Many thanks in advance.

While Zep Instant Spot and Stain Remover is great at removing greasy stains, we would not recommend it for what you need. It is for much smaller applications and would not give you the results you are looking for. Unfortunately, we do not have another product that we can recommend from our line to assist with the oil removal. We appreciate your inquiry.

We would not recommend the use of the Instant Spot and Stain Remover on leather. Instead, take a look at our Zep Commercial Leather Cleaner and Conditioner. Be sure to follow the instructions on the back label for application.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Works well on some spots I used this carpet cleaner on several spots and found it is effective for some and not so effective for others. The first thing I used it on was a sweatshirt that had soy sauce spilled on it. The spot was fresh and the spot cleaner was very effective in removing the spot. Second, I used it on a spaghetti sauce spot on the same sweatshirt. That spot was also fresh. The spot cleaner did an adequate job on the spot but you could still see a slight hint of the sauce remaining. Lastly, I tried it on some spots on a carpet. These spots were set in and I didn't really have high hopes they would come out with the spray. The spray definitely faded the spots but I wouldn't say it removed them. Overall, I would say if you have a fresh spot and you use this product and launder the item right away, you'll have good luck with this. For set in stains, it is not too effective. October 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by WOW. we have a low pile berber, and last Christmas my husband spilled a coke and didn't bother to clean it up. I discovered it after it had dried in a nice big splatter, and people had been walking on it for a few weeks, making it almost black! I tried to clean it with soap and water, but I just made it worse, spreading the stain from 12" to 30". I thought for sure i'd just have to replace it, it was so embarrassing. at the last minute, I decided to try this product, and was AMAZED at the difference after the first application. I did it a second time, and it was even better. it's not completely gone, but if you are looking, you'll miss it. the product says to "blot" but I got down there and really scrubbed and it had a great and immediate effect. The price is terrific, and it has just secured a place on "My Favorite Things 2013" list. Excellent! NOTE: pic attached, sorry I didn't think to get a "before" pic! June 20, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does exactly what it says! I've been struggling with stains in my off-white carpet for years, and have tried a number of products, none of which have worked...until now. Zep Instant Spot Remover really does make spots vanish. I'm pretty shocked at how easy it is to use, once you figure out how to use it. Here's what I mean: (1) instead of spraying the spot like you would with a typical spray bottle, you push the nozzle right into the spot, and it foams up the area. Do not try to press down on the nozzle with your finger - you'll likely spray yourself with the product. (2) wait one minute, then rub the area with a clean cloth. (3) spray with plain water to rinse, and then rub again with the cloth. (4) the stain is gone! Yes, it's that simple. Given that this product is so inexpensive, I really can't say anything bad about it. Just don't plan on using it to clean large areas of a carpet. It's strictly a spot remover. Take a look at the before and after photos of two stained areas on my off-white carpet - they had been there for years! January 27, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Worked on most of the stains. I have an older dog with some issues so I have been trying various carpet cleaning products to see what worked best for my situation. I followed the directions and sprayed the area and allowed the product to sit for 60 seconds prior to blotting. The stains remained visible until I began to blot them but some were still visible even after a second application. I also was not a fan for the narrow high volume stream from the applicator tip which changes angle as you press making aiming a bit of a challenge. I will keep this around for when I run out of other stuff since it does work on some stains. Home Depot sells a product I prefer that works better and also does not have the chemical smell that this one has. May 23, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by A little disappointing I'm not sure how to rate this. I tried it on a few different stains and got mixed results. First I tried it on some carpet stains, not very bad ones, and it performed as expected for a stain remover, removing them almost completely. Then I tried more difficult ones because the can says it works on grease and oil. I used it on motor oil and automotive grease to no avail. It was useless. Maybe they meant cooking grease and oil so I may have misinterpreted that. It emits a very strong smell similar to ammonia, but maybe not that. To keep the contents from becoming just a liquid, you have to keep shaking the can almost continuously. In short, I probably would not recommend it over another product. There was simply nothing I saw that was special about this product. December 14, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best! My husband got motor oil on the cloth seat in his car. He couldn't find anything to remove the stain, until we used this wonderful product. It absolutely works! Since then, I have used it to remove small spots on the carpet in our home, and love that is doesn't smell bad and works so well without a soapy residue. I love the Zep brand overall, and this product is a great addition to our cleaning shelf! October 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good spot remover What I can say about the spot remover is that it works. I use this spot remover on my carpet that had stains that I had for some time . My concern was that it might discolor the rug so I had some samples that I had tried it on first and I was happy that it did not discolor it. I let this spot remover soak for 5 minutes then scrubs it and they came clean. As with any spot remover I would recommend that you tested on something else before trying it January 21, 2013
