Q:Can this work with 16" on-center studs with no drywall? I have a question that combines two issues in a couple of other questions. My situation is that in my garage I have 16" on-center studs that are open (no drywall). I know that the rail can work with 16" on-center studs (though at below max capacity) but the installation instructions also say that you need to use anchors every 8 inches between studs. With an open wall, there is nothing to which to attach the anchors. Can you get away without the anchors or do you need to nail in a piece of wood in the gap to which to fasten the anchors? On a related note, do the upright extension tracks need to have some backing as well. So, without a drywall, you would need to add in some backing with some lumber as well for those?

Answer This Question

A:  I think i get what you are saying. I did not anchor the rails every eight inches. i simply used the 16 inch studs. your issue will be if you try to use shelf hangers. Once you hang the down rails, and yes, i screw them in too, you will almost have to use four hangers: at 0, 16, 32 and 48 inches. That also means you will need four shelf brackets too. in essence increasing the cost of each shelf you hang by the cost of the extra bracket. and the whole system by the extra hanger. You will not be limited by the installation, i believe it will actually be stronger than anchor bolts sunk into sheetrock as every screw you install will be in a stud. It will cost more. it will be as strong or possibly even stronger. And, with your brackets at the end of the shelves, you will not have the slight sag i experience with very heavy objects on the end.

A:  This might be a question for the manufacturer. I think it would depend on the weight of items proposed for the rack. If you were to nail a strip of backing wood for the mid-stud anchors, It should be way more than enough. As far as the upright extension tracks, I don't know. but probably yes.

A:  Hi stein067, thanks for the interest in Rubbermaid and reaching out! The FastTrack Garage Rail can be used without the wall anchors however it will reduce the weight capacity of the rail. For maximum weight capacity we suggest adding sheet rock. We have had consumers add wood in those gaps and be successful too.

A:  I think you would be fine putting them on just the studs. My garage has no drywall. It is cement block. I attached some studs to hang down from the overhead floor joists along the wall and attached my track to the studs. No issues at all.

A:  Depends how heavy the item is your trying for hang; most items don’t require additional anchors so use your best judgment. I didn’t need to use additional anchors when I put up my garage anchors but I didn’t have anything real heavy-common sense is your best guide!

A:  Thank you for your interest in our products! To install the FastTrack Garage 84 in. Hang Rail Track Storage System into cement walls: Use lead type anchors for concrete that use a #10 screw. On the rails put in top holes every 8 inches and in the bottom holes every 16 inches. Stagger the anchors in the bottom holes from anchors in the top holes (4” away from top anchors). First and last top holes should have an anchor. Also since the product was not designed for this wall type (Cement), we cannot guarantee the maximum load capacities of the 48” or 84” rails in this scenario.

A:  We have generally used #10 x 1 1/2" sheet metal screws in AF6 plastic Alligator Anchors. This works for most mounting surfaces.

A:  The hooks and other accessories are not “locked” firmly on the rail. I would worry that they would come off on a bouncing trailer.

                    by|Jan 2, 2021

A:  This does not lock the hooks horizontally. I would question how stable the hooks are in a moving vehicle.

                      by|Jan 5, 2021

A:  It could, but I’ve noticed that the hooks and accessories come loose in a stationary garage. Rakes can slide when bumped. I’d be worried that would be worse in a mobile trailer.

                        by|Jan 2, 2021

A:  This can only be used in a mobile application if your accessory baskets and such have the hole for fastening it to the wall. Otherwise the accessories are free to slide back and forth along the rail.

A:  No, in my opinion the plastic cover is more decorative than functional. In the future you may decide to empty the shelves, remove shelves and brackets and uprights to cover up the steel wall hangers. The plastic cover does not provide any additional strength.

We do not currently have an installation method available for cinder block walls and we cannot guarantee the maximum load capacities of the 48" or 84" rails in this scenario. The normal weigh capacity is 1,750 lbs. It is advised to contact your local hardware store to speak with a professional regarding this type of installation technique.

A:  The maximum load of the rail is 1750 lbs or 250 lbs/foot. I would recommend using Tapcon screws to mount to concrete block walls. Note that if you truly have cinder block walls this answer may not be accurate. A 3/16-inch diameter Tapcon embedded 1-inch deep has an ultimate shear strength of 730 lbs. Applying a safety factor of four results in 180 lbs per screw. So one screw per foot will give you a working load of 1260 lbs over 7-feet. Refer to the following data sheet from HD for additional information for larger screws and ultimate pull-out strength. https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/c0/c063f0ba-e028-42fd-9652-a519dfcf1198.pdf
