A: Hey Phil, this is Ricardo with Simpson. The LUS28 hanger is made for nominal 2 x 8 lumber and can be used for many applications including deck joists. Whether or not this hanger will meet the load requirements of your design is not for us to say, this would be up to the design professional for your project. We do have specific load values listed in our catalog dependent on which pine or fir species of lumber you are using. For more information, please feel free to reach out to our Tech Support team at 800-999-5099. Have a great day.

A: Use the joist hanger nails. They’re the diameter of the hole in the hanger and don’t protrude through the joist

A: Hello Yikes, this is McKenzie with Simpson Strong-Tie. The LUS26Z requires (4) 0.148x3" nails into the header and (4) 0.148x3" nails into the joist. However, With 3x carrying members: When 0.148" x 3" nails are specified, use 0.148" x 2 1/2" nails into the header and 0.148" x 3" nails into the joist with no load reduction. With 2x carrying members: When 0.148" x 3" nails are specified, use 0.148" x 1 1/2" nails into the header and 0.148" x 3" nails into the joist and reduce the load to 0.77 of the table values. See Fastener Design Information.

A: We used these for our above ground deck. So, I'm not sure how they would work with ground contact.

A: Hello PaddyPat, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. I believe you are asking if the Zmax finish on the LUS26Z hanger is compatible with ground contact treated lumber. In many cases, yes it is. However environment and/or higher chemical content may accelerate corrosion. On our home page at strongtie.com scroll down to the 2021-2023 Wood Construction Connectors catalog and review pages 12-15 Understanding Corrosion. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

Q:Can this hanger be used on rafters that have A roof with a 3/12 pitch?
by|Apr 10, 2022

Answer This Question
A: Hi Terry, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. The LUS series was not designed for rafters with a 3/12 pitch. I would suggest considering an alternative series, like our LRU, LSSJ, and LSSR series of adjustable pitch rafter connectors. Please see our website at www.strongtie.com for more information. Or if you'd prefer, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you-Colin.

A: Yes, use 1.5" screws though
by|Mar 9, 2022
A: Hello Samy, this is McKenzie with Simpson Strong-Tie. If I understand you correctly, your installation would be an LUS28Z on each end of an 18" joist between two 2x8 joists. As long as the LUS28Z meets your load requirements, this is acceptable. Screw fasteners are as follows: 1.5" #9 SD screws into the face fastener holes and 2.5" #9 SD screws into the double shear joist fastener holes (see info in the link below).

Q:Will this hanger work for hanging 1-new 2x8 (1-1/2" thickness) and 1-rough cut 2x8 (1-3/4" thickness) sistered together? If not, is there a product that would work for this application? Thank you.

A: Hey Greg, this is Ricardo with Simpson. Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry. The LUS28-2Z hanger that you are asking about was designed for (2) 2 x 8 pieces of wood that are nominal size lumber 1-1/2" thick. If you were to attempt to force the wood into the hanger, it may cause the metal to bend and weaken the integrity of it. Because of your specific condition, one suggestion would be to contact your Lowe's representative, or our customer service team at (800)999-5099 and inquire about ordering an HU48X, which is a special order modifiable hanger. You can modify the width to 3-3/8". This will give you enough room in the seat of the hanger to fit them both. Have a great day.

A: The two that are standard 1.5" thickness are pretty tight, but I believe you could get the rough cut in there. You would have to do a little reshaping it as I dont think there is any other bracket that will work. I would imagine you will have to hammer each one individually to make it fit. Hope this helps.

A: I just measured my Simpson bracket and it was 3-3/16”. Your two boards together will equal 3-1/4”. Your sistered 2x8’s will only be 1/16” too thick. It would not take much effort at all to use a chisel or a hand planer to shave 1/16” off the final 2” of the board to snugly fit inside the bracket pocket. It also would be very easy to use a hammer and simply flatten both sides with a few whacks on each side since you are likely working with a soft wood like southern pine.
I am not aware of another option that would specifically fit your unique needs. I love Simpson joist hangars. My entire second floor is Simpson joist hangars.

Answer This Question
A: Hello Penny, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. I assume 2/3 refers to 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" lumber and 2/4 to 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" lumber. We offer a Zmax finish hanger for 2x4 lumber. At our home page, strongtie.com, in the upper left corner enter LUS24Z in the Search Strongtie.com field. You can also find more information in our Wood Construction Connectors catalog (C-C-2021) on page 104. We do not have a face mount hanger for 2x3 lumber.
