Customer Reviews for Prime-Line Kwikset Steel 5-Pin Door Lock Set Re-Keying Kit

This product had a couple issues making it useless, perhaps just a one-off mistake but here's what happened: Ordered the Kwikset 5-Pin rekey kit which is seemingly what I received, even says so on the packaging and has the right type of key for my locks. The little sheet included shows the order to put the pins in quite clearly. But the separate instruction sheet was for the Schlage "C" type lock. Well I can figure it out without the instructions. However, when I put all the pins in the correct order the first pin, closest to the exterior, was slightly too long for the included keys, visibly so. Therefore it wont slide back in when reassembling or if reassembled without key in cylinder it will not turn and unlock. Totally un-usable.

This works great, as long as you follow the instructions very carefully. Watch the video and read the included instructions. I messed up on my first deadbolt by not inserting and turning original key 1/4 turn before disengaging the cylinder from the housing. A spring got stuck and came out, had to buy a new deadbolt. All-in-all, it was worth it, this re-key set works great. After my initial fumble I was able to re-key 4 locks (deadbolt and entry) in about 15 min each. The video on Home Depot's site is excellent, but make sure to read the included instructions entirely also as both will make for a perfect install.

Very easy to use. Had exactly what I needed to re key several dead bolts and door handle locks. I didn’t have the original key. but by looking it up on YouTube. Kwikset has instructions of how to complete the re key process.

As another reviewer commented, this particular kit had a "remover" tool which was too big for the lockset. I had used this kit (ordered one last year) and used it no problem. This time I could not get the tool in at all! I couldn't find my kit from last year until today, and I proved to myself that the tool in this year's kit is bigger (see photos). It is hard to tell, but that 1 mm or less makes all the difference. The kit that has the tool with the half circle shape at the large end is bigger. The "V" shaped end is smaller (last year's kit) and works. It is easy to see the difference when you put them end-to-end. If you get the wrong (defective) kit, it won't work. Hope this helps!

This is a great no-frills product for re-keying. I found it easier to find a youtube tutorial to follow along with (in addition to the instructions included). Once I got through the first one, the rest were a breeze.

This was easy to use. I rekeyed 5 locks in a short amount of time. The instructions were easy to follow.

I’ve been using these kits for years and they work great. The one star ding is due to the packaging and display. Be absolutely sure the bottom of the package has not separated from the cardboard and plastic. The essential disassembly (silver metal bar) tool can fall out of the package, rendering the kit useless.

Cheap but did the job.

I was able to modify the pins to rekey my current lock.

I tried using this kit, but my lock had TWO pins per hole, and there was nothing in the instructions for such a lock. I will have to call a locksmith.

The kit worked, but I'd like to have a better tweezers, this one isn't good at all.

Works well, once it's intent is understood. This kit does not allow you to re-key existing locks to a key you already have, you must re-key all your locks to match (and use) the keys in the kit. Each kit is different, and will re-key up to 5 Kwikset locks. I used it to match three new Andersen storm door locks and one 20 year old Larsen storm door. Had to have several copies made (the kit comes with 3 keys), but all work fine.

Was just as described on website and worked perfectly. I used the kit to re-key the two locks I purchased at Home Depot near me. The Home Delivery was a day sooner then expected.

I used to own a business that installed building products in new constructions, so I have a fair amount of experience keying locks. It's hard for me to imagine someone without the basic knowledge of how locks work being successful with this. Congrats to those who have pulled it off. It's not rocket science, but I'd think watching some videos would be helpful for most. Knowing not only what to do, but why you're doing it will make the process smoother. They should just leave the "tweezers" out of this kit. They are absolute junk and clearly just there for looks. All that being said, I rekeyed my rental onsite for $12 so I'm happy.

I actually got the kit, thinking it was to re-key an existing lock for a different key, this kit is to change the locks to use the keys included. In the end, it worked out, I was able to use it for what I needed it, just be aware. All good.

I bought this kit with the intention of rekeying a replacement deadbolt lock to fit the same key that was used with the previous lock. Apparently, the pins supplied are intended to rekey locks to fit only the keys that are supplied with the kit. In my case, the pins that came with the kit had 5 different colors but many pins with different colors had the same length. The cheap plastic tweezers that come with the kit are practically useless.

If you have a basic concept of common entry locks (of any brand) this kit will take care of you. Disregard any reviews crying and stamping their foot over pin colors or the sizing tool. Just exert 5 minutes, watch any of the instructional videos online, easily get the job done, and then go to the next project. Its literally that easy.
