CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not impressed Light weight, sleek design, easy to carry, easy to store and a good travel companion. Just like any other flash light, this light is only for emergency purposes. So, do not expect it to run for hours and hours. Unit provides 2 modes of light (White and Red Flashing), view attached pictures. Roughly, it will stay ON (with white light) for about 5 hours. It gives you the capability to charge a USB device i.e. Cell or iPod etc. The light has to stay ON for the USB charging and that’s absolutely not a well-thought design. It charged my smart phone at a rate of 3% per hour. That means you will need 33 hours of charging to have a battery charged from 0 to 100. But then again, this is only for emergency purposes and a few percents can mean a lot. You are charging or consuming; you have no way of knowing how much battery life is left. Most of the solar lights out there have no battery indicator anyway, so I don’t see this as a major problem. In open areas, the light spread is about 30 feet. The unit supports A/C charging but the charger does not come with it, you have to spend more to use A/C charging. Comparing the total cost of this item vs. the capability it offers, this light is not a great buy. October 24, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great Emergency Light The Sun Pad is a great light for an emergency situation. I have used it for a few days to: Charge my Cell Phone, Light my way through dark hallways, and for reading. I am an avid camper. This would be great for someone who car camps. The way it's built might make it to fragile for a back pack camper? By no means is it flimsy. It might not survive a back packers fall unless it was wrapped very well. I don't think its waterproof either. The only other thing I could see wrong is the light needs to be on, for it to charge a cell phone? This seems to be a waste of the power it stores. It will give you light for 4-6 hours. This should get you through the night. October 24, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Useful, but missing a few key features This is a handy task light/lantern that could have been amazing with a few design changes. Even so, it's still a pretty useful addition to any emergency kit, camping trip, or just around the house. Since the power goes out a LOT at my house, I'm sure I'll get lots of use out of this thing in the near future. Since my neighborhood doesn't have any sidewalks, I plan on carrying this with me whenever I go for a walk at night and activating the red flashing feature for safety. It's light enough that I don't think I'll have any problem carring it for extended amounts of time. It shipped charged, and I was able to turn it on and run it for about 6 hours right out of the box. After that, I charged it about 6-7 hours in indirect sunlight the next day, and it lasted about 5 hours the next night. It probably would have lasted a full 6 hours if I had placed it in direct sunlight and kept the solar panel pointed at the sun throughout the day. Pros: •The light is designed well in a compact form-factor. The adjustable handle swivels and locks to angle for use as a carry handle, hanging loop, or kickstand. •The rubberized exterior reminds me of the same material as a protective case for a tablet or phone. I haven't put the light through any rigorous testing, but I'd expect it to hold up fairly well to a little jostling and/or minor water spills (not immersion though!). •The light is BRIGHT! It will really light up a whole room or tent. It's more of an area light though, so it doesn't project very far if you want to see long distances at night. •I was able to find replacement 3.7V rechargable lithium ion batteries fairly easily online with double the capacity of the included rechargable lithium ion batteries. They're AA sized, but don't just use regular AA batteries - the voltage on those is only 1.5V each. •The USB port for charging electronics is an excellent addition to this lantern. The last time tornados went through my area, the power was out at my house for almost 12 days. It would have been nice to be able to maintain a minimum charge on my phone without having to go to a friend's house to plug it in. Cons: •A wall charger is not included with the light. There's a discrepancy between the website description and the packaging. The box doesn't say anything about an charger being included. •There's no charge status indicator to estimate how much battery life is remaining, even though this would have been a fairly simple feature to include. Without an indicator for battery life remaining, I don't know if I need to prioritize how I use the light. For example, if the power was out at my house could I continue to use the light for reading, or should I use the light to make a last bathroom trip before going to bed before the battery runs out? •The cell phone charger feature doesn't work unless the light is turned on. In my opinion, this is the biggest downside to the product. In order to minimize power losses due to the light, I'd recommend using the red LED flashing feature, which draws less power than the full white LED lantern option. Even so, the two 800 mAh batteries don't even add up to the battery capacity of my phone. Add in losses due to inefficiencies and the unwanted waste of the light, and there's no way I could get a full charge on a dead phone out of it. I'd really like to give this lantern 3.5 stars. Adding the battery charge indicator and the option to turn the light off while charging a phone would have gotten it a full 5. October 24, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Light for multiple situations This is a light I purchase for Camping, and Emergency use. It is easy to store, easy to charge after use, and was at a reasonable price. The only thing missing is a bag to carry it in to keep it from getting scratched easily. October 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Still going strong! I received this product in September of 2012 from the Home Depot Seeds program. After a full year of use, I wanted to submit a follow-up review. I used this item each time I went camping, and around the house as a flashlight. I was not disappointed with the performance of this product. The light was bright enough to read by in a tent (when hung above), and performed fairly well as a light source around the house in dark work areas. I have had no issues whatsoever. Also, but was not part of the plan, this light was not affected by the worst thunderstorm I have ever been in. The unit was left outside to brave the weather on its own. No water got into the electronics, and worked perfectly even though soaking wet. October 15, 2013
