Customer Questions & Answers

Does the dryer have the option to vent out the side?

Asked by: Kitten
I purchased this model GE Unitized electric space maker washer/dryer in January and I am very happy with it! Mine had to be vented indoors as I live in a condo. However, the unit comes with its own vent hose which is attached to the back of the dryer and the hose has one end that has an "elbow" attachment which is removable, leaving you with an 8 ft long stretchable/collapsible vent hose that could easily be vented to the outdoors if you had an appropriate hole in the wall to the outside. I had to use the "elbow" attachment to connect the vent hose to a small box in which water is absorbing the lint from the dryer because of the indoor venting option I have. Good luck!

Has GE addressed an apparant issue where the dryer leaves black grease marks on items?

I would really like to purchase this unit to replace an 18 yr old GE unit, but have read numerous reports of the dryers on this (and smaller) GE "Laundry Center" units leaving black grease marks on clothing/sheets/etc. This seems to be a very widespread issue and has been reported by reviewers for a couple of years, yet I continue to see new reviews with the same complaint.
Asked by: sbva
Yes, they just keep sending out repair people. I spoke to a GE Customer Service rep. several times on this issue and they did send me an email this morning that they would not replace the unit at this time. I have owned the product since March 2016 and had 7 service calls to date on the black mark issue and the repair man has replaced every part in the dryer and nothing has worked. The status of this date is I still have black marks and now it rattles. All I can say is I hope you have not purchased one of their products.

I understand that rinse temperature is ALWAYS cold on this model. Could I add hot water to the rinse?

Asked by: homqnm
I don't believe so: I actually prefer cold rinse temperature to save energy on heating water. I like very much the option to select "heavy" load option for the extra large loads or, loads of more soiled clothes. The washer and dryer work beautifully!

With what GE charges for this unit, why can't they add a buzzer like some cheaper modles of other brands ?

Asked by: Sparkey
If you listened carefully, the washer does a double click at the end of the cycle. The dryer just stops and you can hear it easily. I had a Frigidaire unit before and it beeped at the end of the cycle. It also beeped at 3 o'clock in the morning when it felt like it... I HATED it!

Customer Reviews

Unitized Spacemaker 3.4 DOE cu. ft. Washer and 5.9 cu. ft. Electric Dryer in White is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 286.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact size yet large capacity My wife loves it. When she is happy, I am happy. She is short so having the controls in the middle, below the dryer, is a must for her. Also, she likes the top loading washer as opposed to having to bend over when using a front loading washer. The large capacity is great, no problem washing sheets, blankets and beach towels, especially when the boys come home from college. Having the dryer lint basket in front makes it easy to clean. We are in a small condo and it fits perfectly in a closet in my office/guest bedroom. The dryer is not as loud as I had expected, I can do business on the phone while it's running.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So very happy I got this unit! I did a lot of research before purchasing this washer/dryer combo. The wash basket is full sized; the dryer drum is also full sized. It is quiet. It is fast and efficient! I had a full sized washer and dryer and wanted a unitized one for space (wanted room to fold clothes and store items). I think this was the best purchase I've ever made! The guys who installed it for me showed me the little tricks about it (like put the dryer through a full heat cycle before putting clothes in it to get the smell out of the new unit; and how to "balance" the unit once it settles so the drum and basket don't bounce around like they have a lopsided load.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very pleased with unitized washer/dryer The washer has a large tub. Resist the urge to overload, especially with heavy items (towels). It can go out of balance, however, the machine has built in feature to stop the cycle so you can remove/re-distribute if necessary. Great dryer. We separate light items first - done in a few minutes, then let the heavier items go for longer. Again, don't overload heavy items - 5 towels max to ensure they can toss and fluff. Very acceptable minimal noise factor for both washer and dryer. Definitely recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed After about one month, this has proven to be a very good product. It was pretty much exactly what I needed for my new condo. I debated between stacked front-loaded machines and this combo unit and after ready several issues with the front loaders decided on this. Positives: very large capacity in a rather compact design, not too loud or large bangs (more of background "white noise"), good variety of settings, spin cycle really gets most of the water out - nearly dry when time for the dryer, and most importantly it gets the clothes very clean. Negatives: Not much- just that washing cycle is a little long, I havent timed it but seems to be longer than I have had in the past - this perhaps is due to the energy efficiency. Side note (pun intended) - this combo unit can be vented staight out the back or to either side. I made sure of this in the instructions before buying it. This did take a little figuring out to install, basically I needed one more semi rigid vent to connect to my "up vent". This added just about 1" of needed clearance (depth). I have tried to include a picture but as it was a very tight squeeze I couldn't get a great one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is not reccomended I bought the product less than a year ago and have had the washing machine serviced. They practically rebiult the entire machine. Expect to have at least two visits when dealing with a GE repair job. One visit is to look at the machine and the other is to fix it. They fixed my machine with a lower quality product. Plastic tub vs the stainless steel. The company somewhat compensated me for the difference after many phone calls and dealing with customer service. The machine sounds like a tin can and the spin cycle still leaves clothes very wet. I am hoping the repair will fix this but it has had the problem since day one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't seem to get one that works. My esteem for all things GE has plummeted. After being delayed twice, a unit was delivered and installed, and the dryer didn't work. It sounded like someone put lug nuts in the dryer basket when it was turned on. A replacement unit was sent. The washer basket was out of balance or something and the spin cycle sounds like someone's beating the machine with a hammer. I'm currently waiting on a replacement basket to see if that solves the problem. I'm about a second away from cancelling the order. Apparently there are no quality control inspectors at GE anymore.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Possible solution to water draining out as it fills... I had a washer in which the water would drain out and never would fill up. This was because the drain hose was too low and the water was siphoning out by gravity. The solution was to raise the hose a few inches higher than the washer top before it connected to the drain. I used a wall hanger to keep it in place. After that, no more problems and the washer filled and drained as it was supposed to. Hope this helps. Dd

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this machine In the first week of our unit's operation, the dryer left dark oil streaks on several sets of new sheets. On the initial service call, the GE service technician told us that it was not possible for the unit to cause oil stains and never even examined our unit. We have oil coming off the drum of the dryer and are still waiting for GE to fix the problem. We are stuck with a machine we cannot use for fear of ruining more laundry. We have begun a time-consuming, painful claim process with GE to make them take this unit back.
