I am looking at buying this machine, but was concerned about all the comments about rusting after one to tow years. Is there a way to prevent this?

It seemed that most people who posted had the white version, is it less likely to rust with the silver, or does it not matter. LG if you could respond with anyway I could prevent this, thanks!

High-Efficiency Top Load Washer with Steam in Graphite Steel, Model # WT5680HVA, it may be easy to remove by running a wash cycle using the hottest setting available, and adding two cups of lemon juice to the water. Rust stains in the NeveRust™ Stainless Steel Drum should not be an issue but you will want to make sure that you do not leave coins in the pockets of your laundry that might scratch and damage it in any way and leaving the lid open after washing will help the machine to dry out which helps in preventing rust from forming...^IFV Read Less

I would like to leave the soak for a few hours. And then drain, then wash - not reuse that water.

The Soak option n provides a 30 minute pre-soak prior to the start of the selected cycle and at the end of the pre-soak time, the
selected cycle will begin with the same water used for the soak. This washer is equipped with a special feature that
is designed to make your washer as safe as possible.
If the washer is paused or shut off while there is still water in the tub, the water will drain automatically after several minutes of inactivity. Once you select your desired cycle and press the START/PAUSE button to begin the cycle, the lid will lock, and the washer will agitate briefly without water to measure the weight of the load. If the START/PAUSE button is not pressed within 5 minutes, the washer will shut off and all settings will be lost. Any water remaining in the tub will automatically drain five minutes after the washer has shut off. You can pause any cycle after it has started, bit if the washer is paused and the START/PAUSE button is not pressed within 5 minutes, the washer will shut off and all cycle settings will be lost and any water remaining will drain five minutes later. The washer can be turned on or restarted any time before the drain begins. However, once the water begins to drain, all functions will be suspended until the water has been completely drained and the washer shuts off...^IFV

To use this feature, when a problem occurs, you would have to call the Call Center (800) 243-0000 and follow the instructions of your consultant. You will then be instructed to press the Delay/Start button for 3 seconds. After that, you will be instructed to hold your phone to 1/2" near the power button of the washer. During this time, you will hear tones that confirm that information from your washer is being sent and you will need to continue holding the phone next to the power button until you see "End" showing on your display. The dishwasher should not be turned off before then, it will automatically turn off by itself. After that, you can resume conversation with the consultant. The feature helps to immediately diagnose minor problems over the phone and helps save time by detecting any problems prior to a technician being dispatched to your home if service is required...^IFV Read Less

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 468 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Loved it, at first. Very disappointed now. We have owned this washer and dryer set for 3 1/2 years. The washer is beautiful, has a nice big tub for clothes, and has always performed well. We purchased it because Consumer Reports listed it in the top 3 back when we bought it. BUT... My wife informed me that she was seeing rust around the bleach dispenser. Upon further inspection, we realized that there was quite a bit of rust on the inside of the top metal casing. Upon even further inspection, we realized that the washer was dripping into the tub, and looked like the water shut off valve was not fully functional. Fortunately, we had purchased the 5 year warranty through Home Depot. However, that was also a very big hassle. It took them over one month to get our washer back into working order. For the last several days I was calling daily and demanding that we get a new replacement unit. That didn't happen, but they somehow got the correct working parts to our repair man. But beware of the warranty - they are allowed to use "refurbished" parts. The new replacement part has a more scratched up stainless steel lip on the top glass door than our original. Also, the soap dispenser is much more worn than our original. It works, but I feel like my "new" machine is not anymore. Had to use a laundromat twice during that time (for a family of 5) and used $75 (of which warranty only claims to cover $50 - I have yet to file for this reimbursement, so I hope they will do the right thing, but not counting on it at this point). Felt like I only got attention from Home Depot warranty service when I started calling daily and pushing for replacement of our machine. Even so, I could never get anyone with the warranty service to "own" my situation. Never could get a last name or a direct phone number /extension for follow up. Requested a service manager call several times, but they would not read the notes and would call my home phone and leave a voice mail instead of calling my cell phone as I had requested, and then leave the generic Home Depot warranty number only. Bottom line, my previous washer lasted over 15 years and never had a bit of rust. Anyone I talk to in the family has never experienced this with any washer. But if you start reading the reviews here, you'll see that many are dealing with this. Don't let the beauty of this machine lure you in. I regret our purchase. Thankful the warranty finally has us back up and running, but still regret this purchase. April 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So efficient! I love all the alternatives you have for washing normal clothes to baby's and to delicate and then you have the sanitary for towels beautiful as I always buy white towels my towels are WHITE like always this is my second washer. The same style July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best washer I've ever owned! This washer was recommended to me by a customer while I was shopping at Home Depot. She was absolutely correct. Best washer ever! June 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stop! Do not buy this washer! The EPA has made the manufacturer regular the amount of water. It may be a top loader but don't think you are going to get much water in the huge tub unless you are washing on the bedding cycle. Clothes do not get cleaned and the cycles last forever! I thought I was getting a quality product but I wasn't. I have had it repaired twice already. The detergent tray had to be replaced because it would not empty out. Water left in the tray that had to be dumped before using again. Also the switch to turn on the unit fails all the time. I have to let it set for at least 15 minutes between loads to get it to turn on again. Repair came out and said nothing was wrong but it continues. Now it is out of warranty. Great!!! April 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Major Failures and Balance Issues Second major failure in three months- also has periods of balance issues-every wash load- then no issues- not related to leveling of type of load.. Also having issues with HD service on this repair- second attempt to repair the current issue without success- tech now headed to store to find a tool- has now twice warned me how difficult this repair will be- no confidence this will be resolved today....I do not recommend this LG appliance or the HD service contract- also had issues with service on new lawn mover with purchased service agreement. March 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by New and so far good Still only used a month or so but I can't say anything bad about the washer. It would be nice if the top were actually a glass product rather than a plexiglass type but that's nitpicking. I'll update this in the months/years to come. I also purchased the extended warranty. After reviewing many wash machines before settling on this one it became apparent the extra warranty would be prudent (these aren't the simple machines of yester-years). March 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UNIT!!!!!!!!! I purchased this item 2 months ago and I have had several leaks. LG support department is awful! They have sent out a technician 3 times and still have not been able to repair my machine. LG is trying everything in their power to not replace my machine. I'm still having leaks and the leaks are now damaging my floors. Please do not waste your money on this machine. Very cheap washer machine and very bad customer service! March 15, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by only for the very dirty this is a washer designed for a large family that has lots of very dirty clothes, towels, etc. It is terrible at safely cleaning clothes that are just business casual, professional, athletic, etc. I have had to buy laundry bags to wash over half my clothes because it just mangles them.
