Product Overview

The Zircon StudSensor HD55 detects the edges of studs in walls up to 1-1/2 in. deep, allowing you to identify the ideal weight-bearing midpoint for anchoring heavy wall-mounted objects. Just slide the battery-operated instrument along a wall and the LCD display's Target Spotlight will alert you to the presence of a stud edge. The handy SpotLite Pointer on top of the device lets you precisely mark the wall with a pencil courtesy of an illuminated V-shaped groove. Slide it farther along to find the other stud edge, split the difference, and you've located the stud center.

  • Enhanced LCD display with Target Spotlight indicates approaching stud edge and illuminates when stud edge is detected
  • WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded AC electrical wiring up to 2 in. (51 mm) deep
  • Patented over-the-stud indication alerts the user to start the scan in a new location if scanning begins over a stud
  • SpotLite Pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the wall to clearly indicate the edge of the stud
  • StudScan mode locates the edges of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 in. (19 mm) deep
  • DeepScan mode doubles the scanning depth to 1-1/2 in. (38 mm) deep
  • Requires 9-Volt battery (sold separately)
  • Great solution for all your detection needs

Answer:
Yes, I can confirm this will work through plaster as this is the material I was scanning for studs behind. However, keep in mind that plaster walls have slats which are also wood and space pretty tight, so it will probably take more effort to get an exact reading on the studs that the slats are nailed into.

Answer:
I suppose it would depend on the thickness of the plaster, the thickness of the base coat and the type and density of metal lathe used behind the plaster.

The preferred technique would be to use a Zircon Studsensor that includes a “metal scan” mode. This will allow you to search out and map the nails that hold the horizontal lath pieces to the studs. This way it’s possible to map out the studs accurately. Check out the Zircon “YouTube” tip videos on “YouTube” or through our website for detailed instruction on lath and plaster stud finding technique. The best tools in the Zircon product line for identifying stud nails are the "m40 Metalliscanner", or HD800 and HD900. These tools are available at Home Depot. Thanks. Read Less

Wire warning detection on this stud sensor is very limited. Infact, some newer smart phones have the same sensing capability to detect electrical wiring.
The detection works by having the sensor observe its own magnetic field, which will be distorted when it passes over an electrically charged ferrous metal. Think of two magnets as they approach each other or of the old etch-a-sketch toy. If you held Read More

Ronnie,
The Zircon HD55 will show an icon on of a lightning bolt as a warning, this only works for unshielded AC wiring, that means that it may not show any DC wiring applications, such as door bell wiring or wiring to your heating A/C unit, as they are DC current. My advice is to know where you thermostat wiring is first. this unit worked very well for me and I highly recommend it.

Answer:
The WireWarning feature simply alerts you to the presence of live electrical wires somewhere in the general vicinity. It is meant to be an indicator that it is important to be certain you are drilling into the center of the stud, so double check your marks before drilling. If you want to more accurately find the wire’s location, you will need a tool with the AC Scan mode. The HD900 has this function.

Answer:
YES! I do not have any walls in my home that are tile, so I held a ceramic tile up on the wall and passed the stud finder over an area that I knew it had a stud and YES! it found the stud through the tile. I also passed the stud finder over areas that I knew were hollow, just to make a good test of the tool.
Sincerely,
Bob,

Normal ceramic tile shouldn't be a problem, but if the construction behind the tile contains certain types of insulation or is say, plaster wall construction, normal stud scanning or deep scanning may not work. In any case you'd have a better chance using "deep scan" mode (as it is less sensitive to small changes in density and scans down to one and a half inches. Hardy board or cement moisture barrier shouldn't be a problem either. It just makes the scan deeper which deep scan mode can handle. Also, if there is any regular wall space say above the tile, that's often a good place to scan for studs and then map them down. Read Less

This unit has two methods of stud indication. One is to light up, the other is to make a tone. The tone is not extremely loud, but I can hear it without my hearing aids. There is also two methods of scanning, one is for studs, and the other is a deep scan.

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 183 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't work at all There was no way to determine where studs were with this device. It would sense studs everywhere. Then studs nowhere. Then studs occasionally, but never in the same spot twice. Returning it immediately; very disappointed. I would've had better luck knocking on the wall. October 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product/worth the money I usually go low tech and just use a hammer & nail to find studs. I had a larger shelving project to install and I'm so glad I purchased this stud finder. It was extremely easy to use and made the job so much easier. October 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by very easy to use, Finds the studs with ease, then centers it . Works well October 18, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Rather have popcorn in my teeth than on the ceiling with this unit. This unit works quit well, until you use it on a textured wall. It then becomes hard to move. Not good for popcorn ceilings. Otherwise it works great. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Stud Finder Needed a stud finder that would penetrate deeper than the current one I use. Same brand, different model and mine is older. Wouldn't find studs in a manufactured home easily. I checked online and saw the recommendation for a better finder. I went to Home Depot and found the current "better" model. It easily assisted in finding the studs. Project completed. October 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Found my studs... Worked perfectly. Had to replace and old stud finder. And this did its job flawlessly. October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best studfinder I have ever used. This stud Finder is very accurate, Best one I have used to date. October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Found edges of each stud accurately, easy to operate, worth the $ spent This unit replaces another stud finder I bought at Harbor Freight. It excels because of the range of depth that it can find studs, plus it finds the edges of each stud, making it easy to locate the center of the stud when moving it across the surface of the drywall. This is important when hanging pictures quickly & easily. October 4, 2016
