Nice features: both battery op and plug in work equally well to blow or suction, and the 2 extra tools store nicely. The filter is a good size for what it's expected to do, and the hose connection fits 1 1/4" adapters (generic kit sold separately) that connect to many non-DeWALT tools as well. Less nice: for the price I would have expected it to compete a little better with comparables that have more power (suction) and cost less, but I didn't already have their batteries. The dust bin design is difficult to completely empty easily because of its inward curved lip, and the vacuum and exhaust ports are on the same side, so you lose hose length when you are trying to vacuum something up without also blowing your pile of dust all over the room again. Ports on opposite sides of the machine would have been better. It suits my purposes, but later models could stand these design modifications.

I've had three of these vacuums: All purchased in 2019, and all of them have failed. One of the vacuums started having problems immediately. The vacuum would cur in an out during use, and would eventually stop working completely. I returned this one immediately, and got a replacement. The replacement vacuum I received would go on to do this exact thing again twice. Both times I was able to send this back to DeWalt for Warranty work. The third vacuum was trouble free for 2 years, until failing victim to the same exact problem. All three vacuums were used in a home setting. So three vacuums, same problem. Eventually something in the vacuum wears out, and fails.

I love this. Been looking at one for a long time and then my wife said "buy it". Love the the idea that I can use AC when available and Battery when not. I had wished that they would make a version that also charged the battery. most of the charger components would fit easily and a 3 position switch near the battery that could select Run/Off/Charge.

I am really dissapointed about a Dewalt product for the first time ever. Why would they even sell this? A 30$ black and decker hand vacuum is better than this, has more suction power and that even comes with a rechargeable battery. Shame on you Dewalt!

This is a handy vacuum. A little weak on suction. The attachments remove and attach a little clumsy. I give it 4 stars. It is convenient.

I used this Shop Vac a total of three times. When I finally went to use it again a year later, it wouldn't provide any suction unless I took out the filter. This is the first time Dewalt has let me down. Now I am getting ready to throw out this unit. VERY disappointed in Dewalt.

I bought this vacuum a month ago and it is working great, I use it on my service truck.

This is the favourite vacuum of everyone in the house, kids included. We have recommended it to many! The suction is great. We use it for construction and household cleaning (we purchased an extension wand at a vacuum store and use it for ceilings). We invested in a second battery so never run out of power. Had no complaints for several years, but now the power switch is beginning to fail and has to be toggled back and forth 10-15 times to turn it on. I fear the switch will fail entirely soon. I expected more from a Dewalt and it is making me think differently about the reliability of the brand.

Underpowered even when plugged in to the wall. Hose and the body both clog easily with debris over 1/2 inch. Exhaust air disturbs what you’re trying to vacuum up. Worst design ever.

Great to be able to use 581H vacuum on either 110VAC or 20V battery. Need to keep filter clean to maintain maximum suction. I used it first on cool ashes in fireplace, after burning a non-wood fireplace log. Ash was consistency of drywall dust, and HEPA filter did its job of preventing blow-out through the exhaust opening. But the filter clogged quickly, and then the vacuum lost its suction. This is the exact same situation that occurs when I use my regular, full-size shop vac. For regular vacuum clean-up jobs -- not the superfine "dust" jobs -- this vacuum does the job well. Noticed no difference in power between either AC or battery operation. The portability, especially when using a battery, makes this a great tool to have .... just keep the filter clean!

Perfect bench vacuum and easy to operate

My family purchased this for me for Christmas seeing that I have a supply of Dewalt tools and batteries. We were in the midst of renovating a house for a relative and were in need of something like this. It has handled every task like a champ, my only concern would be that I'd like a product compatible dust bag for the ultra fine sanding dust.

will the water draw stay off the filter. My larger vac gets very diy and wet. Will this small vac be better with water collection???????????

Suction is on the low side. Quality fit and finish is good.

Pretty disappointed with unit. no suction power as expected,even directly connected to household wall outlet. I have two shop vacuums and one hand held in shop. This unit however (DCV581H) lacks suction . At 2.6 amps (312 watts) its terribly under powered. Christmas gift so returning does not seem a option. Buyer beware. This unit does not meet DeWalt standards.. Suprised it

Had been using one of these in my garage for years and purchased a second one for use in my shop. The vac worked great for a year, then nothing. Dead as a hammer. The driving distance to the closest service center doesn't make repair attempt worth the trip. The older unit is still going strong.

Really good portable Vac. Watched many videos and read reviews before purchasing. They pretty much nailed it. I’m very critical of what I buy and this meet my expectations. As always, it could be more powerful but will definitely do the job and do it well. I get a good 25 minutes out of my newer 3.0 amp battery. Seems very quality built in fit, finish and mechanics as you’d expect from Dewalt. It won’t lift the living room carpet but it will pick up the mess on it quite easily. Great portable vac for the shop! A little pricey in my opinion is about the only negative.
