Best idea ever!
I followed the directions and only needed one box to paint the sides of our basement pillar (two coats on each). We’ve had no issues with it aside from wall not being completely smooth so marker does get stuck in those spots but that was our bad for not handling the kidding/sanding better. Truly love this and would use again and again. Not sure what went wrong for those saying it doesn’t work..when you touch surface it should feel smooth and in photo you can see it’s shiny in the light.

    Waaaay Over Priced
Followed the instructions to a “T”. Even primed with Zinser 123, put on FOUR coats. You can still see the original material underneath. It looks awful. I would have done a 5th coat, but the directions said to use within one hour of mixing. Not impressed - would not recommend.

      Wow this stuff is terrible
I followed the directions, painted the wall. Next day I made a small smiley face with a dry-erase marker. I used a dry eraser.... and NOTHING happened... I mean NOTHING. It didn't smear, didn't fad away a bit... N-O-T-H-I-N-G. So, I used that white board spray. This kind of 'helped', but I had to use the eraser like a mad man.... and now there's a big ugly smudge on the wall.... absolute GARBADE.

Something is amiss here! Rust-Oleum Specialty Dry Erase Kit is a smooth, hard finish that creates a unique writable-erasable surface. As detailed on the label, allow the Dry Erase surface to cure for 3 days before applying any markings. A second coat can be applied to the surface, allow that to cure for 3 days and the Dry Erase will work perfectly.

Good thing nothing bad was written on it.
We prepped the wall put 4 coats on. We were so excited to have our own dry erase wall. Waited two days. Let our daughter write on in. Then spent an hour, not exaggerating cleaning off the markers. It is still not clean. Read somewhere it might be that pens are low odor but I don't remembered that being specified on the box. Any way we will not be writing on it again. Now we just have a big white square in our living room office. Disapointing

Oh no, this is not what we like to hear! Rust-Oleum Specialty Dry Erase Paint is a smooth, hard surface that creates a unique white writeable-erasable surface. Erase Paint must be allowed to fully cure before use, the instructions indicate to allow the coating to cure for 3 days before applying any markings. When applied heavily, as with 4 coats, the cure time will be longer. Give us a call at 800-481-4785 so we can hear more about your experience and work to make things right.

Some explaining is due on this. I used the product to paint a dry erase board in my office, just under 32 sq ft in size. The can is supposed to cover 50 sq ft. After using 3 cans, I got a surface that did not show any of the primer underneath. I didnt mind so much, it was still less expensive than a white board of the same size. However, one thing no one mentions is that unless your surface is as smooth as glass, the board is almost useless. Without a perfectly smooth surface, write erase pens get in the nook, crannies, dimples and other imperfections. Its takes a lot of work to remove the ink. After a lot of Windex and scrubbing, I still have ghost images of previous use (see photos). The product would have to be self leveling to overcome this issue, which probably wouldnt work well on a vertical wall. I finally covered it with a piece of white masonite.

This whiteboard paint worked as described! The tricky part was that after you mix it together, you have a limited timespan to use it, and I had to buy a second kit to put the recommended second coat on. My library circulation desk surface is smooth, white, shiny, and dry erase markers wipe right off! My post-it-note and doodlepad consumption is about to go way down! An old Formica coffee table from the faculty room is a collaboration and doodling table for my students.

I am a visual person, so, I need to draw almost everything a read for school and learning purposes (molecular biology, signaling pathways, etc.), so, I researched for many items before getting to this paint, which, BTW, was my brother's suggestions. I was hesitant, because there a lot of adhesive white boards, as well as way too expensive "pro" kits that promise a lot. Well long story short, I saw this one here, I read Katy's review and steps, and bought it. I wanted a big part of my basement's wall for this, and so I did. I used only 1 can, 3 layers and about 7x4. Man, I love this "board," if you can call it that. It's great, useful, and well, it was CHEAP! Follow Katy's instructions, and then, paint. You won't regret it. And for writing purposes I'm using EXPO markers, and they are great. NO lines or anything after use. I would recommend the EXPO white board care spray. This helps to keep your board SUPER clean. Great great choice.

A little frustrating but end product is what i wanted!
I was super excited to try this out but after reading all the other negative product reviews I was a bit scared. I thought that paying extra for the other more expensive brand was not worth it so I decided to give it a try. I taped off the area where I wanted the board to be with blue tape and covered my floor with newspaper just in case of any spills (which turned out to be absolutely necessary). I then calculated how many coats I could apply with a 15-20 minute dry period before the 1 hour was up which is really important because apparently after 1 hour of mixing the paints it can no longer be applied! With that in mind, I mixed the paints and began applying it although to my surprise it was not like regular paint. It was VERY thin and dripped A LOT (so covering up the floor is a must). I also noticed that it appeared to be seeping through the blue tape that I had applied since it was so thin! After doing a few coats there were still some small spots that the paint didn't cover 100% although my hour was up and I couldn't apply any more layers. After I had allowed it to dry for about an hour I peeled off the tape and was horrified to see that the paint had went right through the tape and left a horrible mess on my walls! However, the paint under the tape was still wet as opposed to the paint outside the tape which was dry. I got to work with a sponge and some soapy water and I washed along the lines. The (wet) paint that was under the tape washed off while the (dried) paint outside the tape stayed untouched leaving me with the crisp lines I wanted. So in the end, I was able to clean up most of the paint that had seeped through the tape (only because it was still wet) and was left with a cool looking (and functional) whiteboard! Overall, if you are willing to put the time and effort into it, you can avoid paying for the more expensive (and probably better quality) brand. I love my whiteboard! Tips: Cover everything nearby with tape and newspaper (the paint WILL drip) Make sure you can get as many coats as you need before the 1 hour is up Check under the tape after about an hour of applying your last coat & clean up the spills if need be before they dry! Use an expo cleaner when erasing on the board (it gets a little ugly if you just use an eraser)

                Worth the savings
I taped off the area and sanded the wall as directed, but I was concerned that even after the 3 coats (as directed for dark walls) it had a texture-like finish. But after waiting the 3 days before writing on it, it worked great. No issues with writing or cleanup. I did go back for a second can for the 3rd coat which gave me enought to do a second whiteboard, same results without sanding. I do plan on buying more since everyone in the office wants one now! At $20 per can, $60 for 2 boards (dark walls) is a real bargain!

                Fully satisfied
I'm a pretty cheap and broke college student so I was hesitant in paying $20 but it was all worth it. Every time someone comes over people love to draw on it. I used 3 coats but there was enough paint to paint a large section of my bedroom wall, some in my sister's room and there was 1/3 of the paint left over(which sadly went to waste because you have to use all of it in less than an hour and I was way too tired to paint anymore). I was super skeptical at first because it seemed so light at first but it definitely looked a lot better after the 3 days. The only problem I could see someone having is if your wall is textured. Mine's is very slightly but not enough to affect it but I could see it being hard to draw on a bumpy wall. Now when I need to remember something it's the first thing I look at when I wake up to because it's right in front of my bed.

The dry part worked but not the erase
Followed the directions to the letter. The paint dried good and hard but it did not erase anywhere near like a dry erase board. Literally wiped as I wrote and it wouldn't completely erase. Tried cleaning with Windex and WD-40 (both work on my dry erase board at work) but nothing helped. I think a gloss paint would clean better. Will definitely be calling Rust-oleum for a refund.

Great Product! Don't trust the bad reviews!
I bought this product with great apprehension due to the poor reviews it received. I really wanted a HUGE whiteboard on my wall but did not want to pay $250. So I had an expectation that this paint would not work. Well, I went to Home Depot and bought 2 kits so I had enough for my 90 sq. ft wall. This is how I SUCCESSFULLY created my 90 sq. ft white board for only $20. 1. I prepped wall first by sanding down the bumps in the paint. Then I applied plaster to the dents and holes. I sanded those down and washed away dust with a semi-wet sponge. Finally I painted a single coat of latex primer and sanded the wall down for the final time. After using the sponge to pick up left over dust again, I was ready to paint. 2. I shook both cans and mixed them together for about a minute, as instructed on the box. It was quite watery but I had the smooth dense foam roller so I was fine. 3. I began painting quickly because I only had one hour (I found that the time restraint is off. I used the paint after well over an hour and was fine). So I finished the first coat and had enough for a second coat with that single can of paint. Now remember: my wall was more that 90 sq. ft so i was very surprised. I finished that coat and had paint remaining after that!! It was not enough for a 3rd coat but I had enough to paint my bedroom door! 4. So I got 2 coats on my bedroom wall and 1 thick coat on my door. 5. I didn't even wait the 3 days until I tested it out! I made a line on my door with a red dry erase marker and it wiped off perfectly! I didn't even prep my door! Then I tried my wall and it erased right off. So happy!!!! 6. I haven't tried keeping my lines on the board for too long so I cannot say if that will come right off. I have noticed that there is a tint of red around that area after I erase but a little scrub with my finger takes that off! I am not only pleased that it works well, but also that I got a 90 sq. ft wall AND a door out of a SINGLE can of dry-erase paint. Thank you Rust Oleum!

Worked well in Office Application. Kid's Rooms are next!
Need to mix in thirds and apply thinly with 3 coats, an hour apart to keep from running. i.e. Do this vs. the instructions. Other than that it works great!

                Pretty bad
I bought this a couple months ago and finally got around to applying it today. I followed the instructions to a T, prepped well and had the right foam roller (or so I thought). The paint applies like stucco, it's really awful. Luckily I had another roller for smooth finishes that I ended up using to smear the paint I applied with the foam roller and it looked passable. Had horizontal streaking still but at least it wasn't stucco and mostly looked like a useable surface. The final coat didn't go on properly tho and my smear tactic started leading to clumping. *Almost* got it working... Going to have to scrape it off and either try again or find a better product. The instructions should be clearer about how to apply optimally. Recommend specific roller brands or models would be good. The box had an inch of dust on it when I bought it so I suppose I got what I deserved... Need to take a hint next time.

Not great but good. Very little coverage. I used a magnetic primer coat first, which is basically black. This white paint needed three coats to cover properly. Had to buy a second set of the white paint. Relatively low odor. Seems to work, as we wrote on it and it came off easily.

Works fine if you follow instructions
Applied as instructed and most importantly waited the 3 days (I waited 4) before use. Works as advertised. To be honest you probably could use any quality gloss paint with similar results. If you read the negative reviews like I did you'll notice a pattern of a few issues: 1) Not waiting 3 or more days (most of the bad reviews) 2) Using more coats then the 2 recommended. In between coasts you need to let the applied coat dry and cure for 3 days as per instructions.

Not as good as Idea Paint but still good!
This paint works well if you keep in mind some very important facts. 1) This does not smoothe your wall. You will see the texture coming through. 2) Coverage is bad, so paint white underneath. 3) To erase, use a dishrag and 91% isopropyl alcohol.

I have used this no less than 4 times. It is by far better than the stuff that sells for a hundred dollars more. The key is to sand the wall super well and then use a foam roller. Works perfectly.

Marker Does Not Come Off Surface
We used this on a desk for our daughter and the finish of it is really nice and smooth. However, the dry erase marker does not come off. We let the product cure for almost 3 weeks. I have tried to remove the marker with multiple cleaning agents and it still won't come off. I'm so disappointed.

We understand your frustration, Chelsea. There are a few things that could cause ghosting on a Rust-Oleum Specialty Dry Erase surface. First, check the type of markers you are using. The ones that claim to be 'low odor' or 'no odor' may not erase quite as easily. We recommend using standard dry erase markers. If this is the case, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to remove the markings and switch markers. It is also important that this product be applied over an existing white surface. If the surface is not white, it is required to paint or prime the surface a white color before applying the Dry Erase Kit. It is also critical to apply this product over a smooth surface and to use a foam roller to get the smoothest finish possible, and apply the product within one hour of mixing/activating the kit. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum
