Had an area with no grass that we wanted to add a paver patio. I initially leveled the existing dirt and sand area out and watered the heck out of it for a week to ensure the existing material had compacted. I then added 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base and ran a plate compactor over it two times in each direction. I then added an additional 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base, and ran the plate compactor again over it twice, in both directions. It is really important that you ensure there are no high or low spots (I kept it under 1/4").
I then placed a stick of 1" PVC Pipe along one edge of the area, and another 8' away. I then added 1" of the Leveling Sand between the PVC, and then pulled a very straight 2x4 along the two pipes (called screeding) to create a smooth, level surface. I repeated this until the entire area had been completed.
Was then just a matter of placing down the pavers, adding the border to keep everything secure, and swept some PermaSand in the joints, got it wet, and the patio looks incredible!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mountainman No Stones
Needing to repair many sunken pavers at a home we moved into last fall I read the reviews on this leveling sand and wasn't sure about it because of the reviews stating there were stones mixed in with the sand. I went to the local store and tried to see if there were any in the bags but none were obvious. I purchased two bags and started my repair job. After using the two bags I found no stones at all in either bag and the sand worked as advertised and it compacted well. However, I was surprised at how little of the product was in a bag, I used both bags fairly quickly on just about a dozen or so pavers. It is relatively inexpensive for one bag but it looks like my job will take many more since there are a large number of pavers to raise in just the first row around the pool. I do like the product though, I bought two more bags today and will buy more as the job progresses, I'm guessing it'll take me several weekends just to repair the immediate row of pavers around the pool and many more weekends for the others in various areas including a garden path. Repairing the sunken pavers isn't difficult but is very labor and time intensive, this stuff works for my application and I will use it again.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MORPHEUS Perfect for working with pavers, retaining block
This paver sand was just the thing I needed to level and adjust height. It seems to have almost a concrete mixture in it. Once it gets damp it sort of sets up a bit. It can still be worked with but it will keep the other items in place. Made putting in my retaining wall a much easier job. It took me nearly 6 weeks ( rainy days not counted) to complete it. But, it's beautiful.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Oceanside Great product to build a firm base
I used the 0.5 cu. ft. Sand Paver Base (Step 1) bags as a base and then put this sand on top of it to build my new patio.
It all came out solid and level - and it looks great.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Joe Worst Paver Joint Sand Ever!
This is base sand ONLY. Specs indicate that it can be used as joint sand but it has no "joining" capabilities and has a number of large pebbles. The description of the product is way off.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Paul Great Product for laying Decroative block/stone
I used this to lay block in the front of my home. I would highly recommend it. With the combination of the little stones and sand, leveling was much easier than laying pebble and leveling that. I had many downpours and the sand/stone held up. You will not regret it.

The crushed material is fine and does what you need it to do; however, there are far too many uncrushed rocks that you have to pick out when distributing the material. Out of approximately 10 bags I was able to fill 1.5 bags with approximately 1" diameter uncrushed rocks but that does not even count the abundance of rocks half that size. So I had a lot of unusable material when laying a base for pavers. A real nuisance.
So there is not much an alternative available, since sand does not compress as well as this material.
