do you have to leave a gap?

I would like to put them side by side (no gap) can this be done?
Asked by: roadstar
NOOO no gap! This wood is very wet when new, it will dry and shrink considerably, leaving more gap than you wish you had within just a few weeks.

Will the store cut this wood to 3.5 inches wide 5 ft. long?

Is there a way to order many of these pickets and have the store cut the wood and when ready, I can pick it up?
Asked by: RobD
Why have them (or you) rip each board and then, have to cut the corner to match the dog ear when you can just buy 3.5 inch pickets for $1.29? All you then would need to do is cut the bottom off to length. http://www.homedepot.com/p/5-8-in-x-3-1-2-in-x-6-ft-Pressure-Treated-Pine-Dog-Ear-Fence-Picket-0200150/100574912 Or, for a little more you can get these cedar tone ones: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Altamit-3-4-in-x-3-1-2-in-x-6-ft-Cedar-Tone-Oil-Brown-Douglas-Fir-Dog-Ear-Fence-Picket-63098/300200477

Some of course had splits and were not straight but overall a good product. However check around after I purchased I found a local store that had the pickets for 50 cents cheaper per picket even after the discount for purchasing 450.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love These Picket - So Sweet!! I build my privacy fence using these pickets from Home Depot, easy to use and stain. I did hand pick mine at the store and only bought what I could use in a couple days, when I used them up I got more until I was finished the fence is 50' x50' on 3 sides with gates and arbors in the front. If your looking for a good cheap way to put up a fence this it! They have been up now for about 7 months and I have had shrinkage but not alot! Would I use them again knowing what I know now? ABSOLUTELY! Great Product! As you'll see in the picture I laid my boards on the horizontal not vertical. Made a nice looking fence!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Luv these boards These things are awesome. I used them on many projects and always pick some up on sale to have onhand. Not only as a fence but also skirting, exterior window and door trim, fascia, topped a front porch. ripped in half(or thirds) for railing ballisters and furring strips. The list is endless. They are cheaper than treated plywood and pine boards per square ft. They come rough cut 5/8" thick 5.5" wide. Sometimes there are bad ones. I buy extra and return unused ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking fence I needed nearly 300 pickets and was worried about purchasing a full pallet because of bad boards. Out of the 244 pickets there was probably 10 bad pickets and I cut those in half for a 3 foot fence or used them in the bottom of some flower boxes. I've live in this house for 25 years and never had a fence but now that it's up I wish I'd installed it earlier.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Make sure they are dry before you nail them..These are great for the money, not many knots. 5/8 T... Make sure they are dry before you nail them..These are great for the money, not many knots. 5/8 Thickness is just what I need. It was hard to space them 1/8" equally apart, many of them are not cut Straight , so I nailed 3 at a time with 1/8" apart with 1 nail on top-middle of the picket, then level the 3rd one and nail the bottom.
