Questions about transparency and durability

There is some color to the Natural Transparent finish, so why is it called transparent? The color is lovely, but I'm curious.

Also, hope it holds up. Wish I had read some of the reviews of this product before totally relying on Home Depot's recommendation to buy it. As I search the net, the reviews are really mixed, more negative than I had hoped.

Please tell me the stain won't start coming off in a year. The can says four years!

Thank you.

Answer:
It is what I would call semi-transparent, some color with a clear coating. It is not very durable, so if it will be getting quite a bit of wear I would try something different. I have had good success with Olympic.

I'v been using #500 for 9 years . my deck is 15 year old . you will have to re stain after 3 years this is when it starts to peel. My deck still looks pretty good. It only lasts 4 years in the shade or low traffic areas. There is a color to it, a brownish orange

Trust me, if someone gave this product a bad review it would have to be because they didn't apply it properly. My deck surface continues to look as if I just did it recently for at least 4 years.

Can't vouch for a full year but its been holding up so far for the summer - our application is about 2 months old.
This finish makes the wood grain show through. Our previous stain was semi-transparent and you couldn't see the wood as well. Both were Behr, btw. The older application (the semi-transparent one) we decided to re-do after 6 years so I guess we got our money's worth.

The finish must be dry in order to act properly to seal out rain droplets, and the finish must have been applied thoroughly to all surfaces of the wood to act as a uniform skin over the wood surface. Holidays in the surface application wherein some areas were not coated thoroughly will soak up rain water as quickly as any untreated wood. Natural rain events will eventually have a weathering effect on the wood because wood is a dynamic material which expands and contracts naturally with its own moisture content which can, over time, cause miniature fissures in the grain surface of lumber which then have no blockage to the passage of water on the surface. Read recoat instructions, and probable life of applied finish offered by the manufacturer. It claims 24 hours during before it can get wet, and when I sued it it did bead up 24 hours later. But also in my experience the rain stopped beading up after the 3rd rain storm, meaning it was just sitting on the wood and soaking in and causing mildew and stains. Use something different.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Deck Looks Great ! We just did our deck with this stain and it turned out great,,we love it..we had the deck installed last summer and was told to Not stain it for a full year to let it bleed out or something..we wanted the natural wood color left and this fit the bill...my husband used a paint sprayer instead of a brush and it took him an hour..he did a second coat also..there are pictures of it included with this review. May 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Shows natural colors in wood I really love how this transparent finish allows you to see the original colors and variation in the wood. I did not want a solid deck stain and this worked great. Keeps the water off and has done a great job protecting our deck. June 14, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Just aweful! What a disaster! Three days of proper prep. Did everything to a T; I'm not a newbie. One rain four days later and it didn't even bead up. Went right down through the wood. The deck is not worth the time and effort to strip and re-do with another product. I'll live with it this year, and put in a new deck next year. If you look at the pic I uploaded you can see around the perimeter where the eaves hung over and the deck stayed dry...looks nice til you get it wet. I never write reviews, but this was so bad I felt I must. April 21, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't Waste Your Money Applied this product less than a year ago. Followed all the directions and even used the Behr wood deck cleaner, etc. Spots are "peeling" and fading and it doesn't look like it will last even a year. Looked up the "warranty" and before they will do anything I have to give them the original receipt. Well you may keep all your receipts for years but I do not. Very disappointed. Spent a lot of time and $$ for nothing. Should have chosen a cheap sealer. At least annual application would be cheaper. No idea what I'll do with this mess now. March 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Results My deck is about 10 years old, but in good condition. After cleaning it thoroughly, I went to The Home Depot and asked their advice on the best deck sealer. I was not concerned with cost. I just wanted a product that worked well (would last a couple of years). The "expert" unequivocally recommended the Behr product. I applied it according to directions (2 coats) and got the coverage advertised. It did not rain for several days after I applied the sealer. Now a month after applying the sealer and several rains, the water does not bead at all. This was just a plain waste of time and money. June 8, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good product Behring stain was easy to use and looked good on my new screen door July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this color!! I love the color and coverage of this stain!! And it's called CHOCOLATE!! We powerwashed the fence to prep it, and had to replace a few boards. The stain went on evenly, and you can barely tell which boards are the new ones! July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't last 4 years! In the intense Arizona Sun, I have to re-apply every 1 to 2 years (to my deck). I followed all the instructions on washing and preparing the deck using the Behr recommended (and branded) products and applying two very thin layers. However, after 1 year in the Arizona Sun, it starts coming off and I have to strip and re-apply. Better than the naked boards, but the advertising on the can says it will last 4 years on decks. Not here in Southern Arizona. June 28, 2016
