Customer Questions & Answers

What is the best grit sand paper for new wood and how much prep needed to use solid stain to get the most years of this product

Asked by: Anonymous
I always use 60-80 as I believe the others are too fine for proper adhesion. Prep is always the key to longevity. Power wash with a cleaner or stripper and neutralize/brighten, then sand if necessary.

Can this product be applied with a garden sprayer?

Some stains are very thick and will clog a typical garden sprayer, what is the viscosity of this product like, and does it contain any solids or particulate matter?
Asked by: Anonymous
NO, you will need an airless sprayer.

I accidentally bought (non-returnable) semi-transparent Behr wood stain instead of solid. Can I make the semi into solid?

Asked by: Anonymous
No, sorry two different bases. Acrylic vs oil.

What is the stated coverage (Sq/Ft) per gallon ? What is the actual experience coverage (Sq/Ft)?

Asked by: Anonymous
300 sq ft./gal. but I usually find it is more like 175 on raw cedar wood.

1 gal. Cedar Naturaltone Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 248.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful absorption! This product was applied to weathered 20 years old exterior trim that was gray and cracking. It sealed the cracks and gave new color. After two coats that trim actually looks like new wood trim! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stain & paint out there~ I've used Behr stains and paints for many years and have never been disappointed. Most recently put on a coat of weatherproofing solid, Cape Cod Grey, on a 12x12 shed sided with all wood T1-11. Rolled it on with a 3/8 roller and it worked well even on the rough T1-11. Used this same stain and same color on a similar shed I built about 12 years ago. One coat and it still looks great! I've been around quite a while and believe me over the years I've tried just about every paint and stain made and nothing beats Behr products - not even close! Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has A Serious Issue I have purchased 50 or so gallons of this product over the last 7 years to weather proof our home on Hatteras Island, NC. My experience has been that vertical applications hold up very well, but horizontal applications do not fare nearly as well, requiring repainting every 2-3 years. The product does not stain treated exterior lumber, rather it forms a coating on top of the wood surface, even when heavily sanded. The hard rain and the marine climate, plus staining of the paint by leaves and soil residue, deteriorates the surface and the coating peels off. This does not happen on vertical surfaces, even using the same lumber. And this product is expensive in the iniitial purchase, not to mention the frequent applications. I am now considering using a UV resistant epoxy paint instead for better adhesion. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old fence looks new again!! We had a fence that was in decent shape structure wise but the color was so faded and gray it made the whole backyard look gross. I wanted to stain it, and found this product - it goes on like paint and covered the fence perfectly with a sprayer. We used the dark chocolate color on the fence. Looks amazing and brand new. Would recommend to anyone!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I have always used Behr paint and have always had good experiences with their other products, so I did not hesitate to purchase this. I had a new porch and front steps on my elevated home and they were built with treated pine. I waited about 6 months to ensure they were completely dry and ready for a finish. Then I thoroughly pressure washed all the surfaces, waited another few days to completely dry, then applied 2 coats of this product per the instructions. That was last year at this time, and this "stain" is pealing and very scratched up now. It doesn't even seem like stain. It just seems like regular paint. How does stain peel? It seems that it would have actually stained the wood, not just put top coat on it. I sanded all peeling areas and pressure washed again, and then just applied 2 new coats of this product simply because I still had some left. I'll see how long this treatment lasts, and then I'll redo it with a better solution. On the plus side, this stuff goes on well and looks great right after application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Star So Far - 1 Year and 1 Winter In... So my 25 year old deck has been a headache from day one when we moved in 5 years ago... It is a PT deck that was painted (why?) and peeling. So we scraped and repainted with the Behr deck paint, but after one Boston winter, it was peeling anew. And after two it was good to go. So we spent an ungodly amount of time stripping the deck of all the old paint and tried a deck stain from Sherwin Williams or whatever and that had the lasting strength of the paint we used the first time... Clearly failing after the first winter and looked crud after the second. Now the winter of 2014 in Boston was insane, but still, it was just two years on bare wood. So we went with the consumer reports best pick - or so we thought. Not until later did I find that DR loved the cheap Behr product. But what was done was done. And I was nervous about all the 1 and 2 star reviews of this product after the fact. But 1 solid (but mild Boston winter) in, the deck looks 100%. I am pleased as punch. I even had to do some rust reforming on some old nails and putty fills in other areas. No issues with the stain there either. To be honest, even if I had to restain those those every year, I would be OK, but given a 100% success rate after the first winter on such an old deck, I love it. Now I dont know why the other decks fail with this stain, but if I had to guess, a poor prep can explain a lot. Even with this one, I spend a good month prepping the 1,000 sq foot deck, In the end who knows... I doubt and dont count on a 10 year life. But even 5 would be amazing. I will update as needed...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use We stained our house with this. It is amazing. We went from a dark brown stain & used Muted Sage, Barn Red & Elephant Skin. We did have to put 2 coats on, but had anticipated that with beginning with such a dark color. It was very easy to use & clean up.
