Questions about transparency and durability

There is some color to the Natural Transparent finish, so why is it called transparent? The color is lovely, but I'm curious. Also, hope it holds up. Wish I had read some of the reviews of this product before totally relying on Home Depot's recommendation to buy it. As I search the net, the reviews are really mixed, more negative than I had hoped. Please tell me the stain won't start coming off in a year. The can says four years! Thank you.
Asked by: teamedup
It is what I would call semi-transparent, some color with a clear coating. It is not very durable, so if it will be getting quite a bit of wear I would try something different. I have had good success with Olympic.

After applying Natural-500, How long must it sit to prevent damage from rain?

Asked by: Anonymous
The finish must be dry in order to act properly to seal out rain droplets, and the finish must have been applied thoroughly to all surfaces of the wood to act as a uniform skin over the wood surface. Holidays in the surface application wherein some areas were not coated thoroughly will soak up rain water as quickly as any untreated wood. Natural rain events will eventually have a weathering effect on the wood because wood is a dynamic material which expands and contracts naturally with its own moisture content which can, over time, cause miniature fissures in the grain surface of lumber which then have no blockage to the passage of water on the surface. Read recoat instructions, and probable life of applied finish offered by the manufacturer. Locale and weather conditions vary across the country for probable weather exposure water levels and conditions.

Can a deck be stripped, cleaned and weatherproofing finish be applied in the same day? Or are drying times needed between each step?
Asked by: wonderning
Hello, Thank you for your interest in our products. It mainly depends on how quick the deck drys after stripping and cleaning it. We want to make sure the deck is completely dry before applying our wood finish. Normally we recommend letting it dry for a minimum of 24 hours after cleaning it. If there is any moisture left on the surface with the finish is being applied, then it could potentially cause the coating to bubble. Best regards, Kevin

Deck stains are never perfect - but I used this based on CR testing and am a bit disappointed. The redwood color is more like old pepto- bismol and it seems to look & feel rather plastic. Used it on my new redwood slat fence. Did some sanding but didn't see the need to clean since it was newly installed one month prior. Application looked same on sanded & non-sanded areas. Also took a few weeks to dry without tackiness. ... we'll see how it goes. Wish they would offer a clear product that you can add small amounts of toner to get a more reasonable color ... not the full pigmented stain which is frankly always ugly from most manufacturers....!

I have about 650 linear feet of cedar fencing six feet tall that is about 7 years old. It had never been stained of sealed. I initially gave it a complete powerwash, followed by a thee day drying out period. Going by the estimated coverage on the can, I initially purchased 10 gallons which was a great under estimate. Before I was finished I purchased another 10 gallons, followed with another 4 gallons purchased for a second coat application as may be needed. The total purchased was 24 gallons total. I had to visit three stores in my area to secure this amount. My method of application was the Graco X5 sprayer which I highly recommend. If I had one complaint, it would be why Behr does not make this available in 5 gallon buckets instead of only in the one gallon size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage Works fantastic for outdoor furniture and you DON'T have to let pressure treated pine "SIT" for weeks before you stain with this as it is water based. DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU ARE TOLD ABOUT LETTING TREATED PINE SIT! It is not necessary and this fantastic product is proof! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I recently rebuilt my 25 year old deck. It's built with treated 2x6 pine. Following recommendations, I allowed it to age 6 months before applying the finish. I had applied traditional petroleum based stains in the past with great results, but purchased this product based on reviews, ease of application and clean-up, and the idea that the water based products were more ecologically friendly. Well... it was a mistake. I had read that you had to be careful to apply thin coats so that no peeling would take place, and followed the instructions about preparation and application carefully. I was very lucky in that it didn't rain for an entire week after application (I live in Louisiana, that's almost a drought here). Of course, it did eventually rain, and the deck that is under the dripline of the house has peeled in sections making an ugly mess. It's obvious that this product does not soak into the wood: it's just a coat of paint on top. Wherever it's peeled, it plain unstained wood beneath. I'm now trying to strip the paint from the two rows that have experienced the peeling. The first product I used hasn't worked, but I'm trying some others now. Replacing the boards in the 2 rows is an option, but I'd have to wait 6 months again before reapplying; I'm concerned that they wouldn't match the other stained (painted) boards.

The Behr Transparent Waterproofing wood finish leaves a beautiful final product, IF you apply several coats of the product. I used it on two projects. A cedar doormat that I made from cedar 2X2's that I sanded smooth with a belt sander. It required four coats of the Behr finish for the desired lustre I was looking for. My pressure treated fence has been completed for about a year so the wood was well seasoned. I wanted to test the Behr product and see if this was going to work here. I applied one coat using both a rag and a brush. While the end result is pretty, I would have to apply at least another coat for any color to show. I think I'll try something else.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it, EVER! Worst product ever. The stain is already peeling!!! It's not even been a full year. Our deck is old and we spent several weekends cleaning and preparing our wrap around deck, including pressure washing. We did this last summer and applied 2 coats. In between the coats we waited a full 24 hours before the next coat. Now it's fully coming off. Some of our old wood was rotting so we had to replace them, clearly this horrible product cannot even work with brand new wood. Don't ever buy this product if you want it to last. I seriously want my money back because this product is not cheap and it didn't even do the job right.

While this stuff, despite being "Natural" and "Transparent" does have a slight tint. But it is very agreeable. It actually improves the natural look of our wood! We've used it on two fences now. The first, the developer put in some cheap crud, allegedly redwood. It was warped, splitting and crummy looking for Redwoodwod. After forcing the developer to replace about 12 boards, we declared victory. Instructions recommend brushing this on. Used the 5" brushes. Came out looking terrific. Hired Fence company for new Redwood fence on another property. A better grade of wood, came out beautiful. Brushing, plan. one Gal. Each 16 feet. But We put it on heavy
