Customer Questions & Answers

can this behr product be used on a deck that has another waterproofer stain on it?

Asked by: 1234
I would suggest removing the old waterproofing stain first using either a stain stripper or an orbital sander and a medium grit sandpaper. If you don't, your new stain may not adhere correctly and could begin peeling ahead of the advertised warranty.

1 gal. Redwood Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 148.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Glow On Wood Fencing Haven't gone wrong with BEHR coatings yet. The All-In-One Wood Stain & Sealer really lets the wood grain pop out. Covers well, provides a solid film that looks like it will last. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 11 Months. Not 6-8 Years After reading the reviews on Home Depot I decided to try the Behr Semi-transparent deck stain tint base. I chose the chocolate color. I used the stain on a 400 sq ft NEW deck and a 600 sq ft previously stained playset/climbing structure. I allowed the new wood to season for 10 months. Both structures were properly prepared according to the instructions on the back of the can and I used all the recommended Behr products. I stained both structures in the fall of 2015 according to the directions on the back of the can. After staining it took 3 weeks for the product to “cure.” For 3 weeks my children could not use the playset/climbing structure and my family could not use the deck. During these 3 weeks the stain was tacky and would leave visible marks if touched. After the product finally cured it repelled water and worked. This fall of 2016 (only 11 months after application) the stain was bubbling, peeling, flaking, and visible mold was showing. The product only lasted 11 months; 1 of those moths was the “curing/hardening” months. This product did NOT last 6-8 years as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product We installed our fence about 16 years ago and it looks as good as it did the day that we installed it. We apply Behr Weather Proofing every 3-4 years. We had to replace one post that rotted above the cement holding it and one fence picket that we split replacing the post. Behr Weather Proofing Sealer is the cure for premature aging of the wooden fence. Everyone in our neighborhood questions us how we keep our fence looking so good year after year. We give Behr the credit for the great look of our fence. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great water repellent My deck is almost 30 years old! It is surprising that it has lasted this long. I had a few boards replaced several months ago, but knew if I wanted it to last any longer I would have to apply a good waterproofing product. I shopped at my local Home Depot, who has always been helpful and attentive to my needs (I am 86 years old). They helped me choose the best product and I was thrilled once I had the product applied to my deck. It will probably make my deck last for several more years! Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk After sanding my whole deck, which is beautiful redwood, I applied this product hoping it would help protect and add longevity to my deck. Boy, what a waste of time! The deck looks sloppy, uneven, and orange. The worst part is, the stain has no waterproofing properties at all! I am so disappointed. I could handle the poor appearance, if the product actually protected the wood, but it can't even handle that. How they get away with calling this product "premium" is beyond me. Don't waste your time with this junk!

Over time it had become weathered and no matter what we did in a month it was a milky white again. Finally we tried Semi-Transparent Weather Proofing wood stain in Redwood. We first tried it in May and it still looked great when we closed the cabin in October. We will see how it makes the harsh New Mexico winter, but it has already out performed anything that we had done before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What A Difference! We recently bought my house and the privacy fence was in rough shape. I wanted it to last for as long as possible before replacing it. We decided to go with Behr Semi-Transparent Cedar Naturaltone stain. The difference is unreal. It masked all of the blemishes and made my yard that much better. Two coats all but obliterated the handsome grain of my new clear redwood. i will try the Transparent and hope for better results. The red color also looks artificial. Hopefully the Transparent looks more natural.
