Customer Questions & Answers

Should I use this on previously sealed/painted wood?

We have a screened porch with wooden frames and floor that we want to protect and repaint. I have no idea what the previous owner did, whether he used a stain/sealer like this or just paint, but the floor and one wall seem to have this type of redwood color. Is this the right product for us? Why does it say "redwood" and "transparent" at the same time--which is it?
Asked by: Markdf
Yes we re stained our podoza that had been done about 8 years ago.

Can this be applied to pressure treated wood? We recently installed the weather guard red wood tone decking. Do we need to apply anything else before

Asked by: Matt
Hello Matt, Thanks for your question. This product can be applied to pressure treated wood as soon as the wood is dry. The surface would need to be bare wood. A previous coating would need to be stripped with Behr No. 64 Stripper followed by cleaning the bare wood surface with our No. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Best wishes for your project!

Staining my Deck - some questions-URGENT PLZ.!

I live in Atlanta, GA.. My deck is new (replaced all footboards 6 months ago), except for railings which is 20 yrs. old but looks good. I had a dark stain on railings. Stripped it pretty well with Behr stripper. Got stripper off with low pressure, pr.washer. But still the pressure washer ripped the wood in places (fibres exposed, looks hairy at places). New wood NOT treated yet. Lightly pressure washed new wood just to get little bit of dirt off. Planning on using Behr Premium cleaner today to brighten both new wood (footboards) and Old wood (railings). Today's high about 60. Not planning to brush (to cumbersome#, but hose it off with a less powerful pr.washer ensuring that wood does not rip. Mildly sand it Sat to get glaze off on new wood and remove the exposed fibres on old wood. And stain it with behr Redwood Transparent stain Sun #Temp 68). Temp will stay at 68 Mon & Tue, will be in low 50's/upper 40's Wed onwards. I want the beauty of the wood to show with grains. My questions: a) Is my overall approach ok? b) Sanding 24 hrs. after using cleaner ok? c) Do I need to even mildly sand the new wood at all or is it unnecessary? d) How much should I dilute stain to ensure that grains are seen, wood beauty is preserved, and wood is not covered like paint? e) Planning on doing just 1 coat given that it may not dry easily. Was planning on doing 2nd coat in Spring. OK or should I do 2 coats now? Please advise......Thx!
Asked by: Murli
A) yes good approach B) sanding day after for a smoother finish after cleaning C) sanding new wood, depends on new wood and rest of deck. Having new pieces match is important to some D) I would not dilute but mix a test sample with Flood (Home Depot paint section) E) two coats now would be best to limit contamination of 2nd coat later When in doubt do a test sample,

Does this product work with wood in the ground?

Asked by: Wondering
Hello Wondering, Thanks for your question. No, it's not meant for wood in the ground so we'd recommend against that. We don't have any products that are meant to be submerged under ground. Well wishes for your project!

1 gal. Redwood Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it, EVER! Worst product ever. The stain is already peeling!!! It's not even been a full year. Our deck is old and we spent several weekends cleaning and preparing our wrap around deck, including pressure washing. We did this last summer and applied 2 coats. In between the coats we waited a full 24 hours before the next coat. Now it's fully coming off. Some of our old wood was rotting so we had to replace them, clearly this horrible product cannot even work with brand new wood. Don't ever buy this product if you want it to last. I seriously want my money back because this product is not cheap and it didn't even do the job right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable Wood Finish Product Refinished the 2 decks in my backyard last weekend. I have been using the Behr premium transparent weatherproofing Cedar Naturaltone no. 501 product for many years. Each application has continued to provide protection for many years. Cleanup is a breeze. I would highly recommend it to all. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't purchase this if you live in the NR Couple of issues with this stain. 1. Very difficult to apply, it had a lot of streaking. If you are familiar with Oil Stains, you will hate this stain. 2. Everywhere on the deck that was exposed to the rain is now pealing off the deck. The stain was applied on a new cedar deck in August, we had a lot rain this year in the NW and it is now March. That is 8 months. The good thing, we can strip it with house water pressure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth I've used this product two times on my redwood deck - 3 year ago and now. It applies well, seals great. The deck looks beautiful - much nicer than the product I used previously - and the finish lasts 2 or 3 years - my deck gets a lot of sun and wear. When the old finish reached its end of life, it cleaned up nicely, though prep is always a chore. I highly recommend this product! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use We have tried other brands and found them to be sub-standard for our Portland, Oregon climate. We applied Behr Transparent Weather Proofing and are really happy with the results. After a lot of rain and tree droppings, when the deck was cleaned off, the product still made the wood look great! I would recommend this for all wood decks! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage Works fantastic for outdoor furniture and you DON'T have to let pressure treated pine "SIT" for weeks before you stain with this as it is water based. DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU ARE TOLD ABOUT LETTING TREATED PINE SIT! It is not necessary and this fantastic product is proof! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
